The Hebrew alphabet (Hebrew: אָלֶף־בֵּית עִבְרִי, alefbet ʿIvri), known variously by scholars as the Jewish script, square script, block script, is used in the writing of the Hebrew language, as well as of other Jewish languages, most notably Yiddish, Ladino, and Judeo-Arabic. There have been two script forms in use; the original old Hebrew script is known as the paleo-Hebrew script (which has been largely preserved, in an altered form, in the Samaritan script), while the present "square" form of the Hebrew alphabet is a stylized form of the Aramaic script and was known by Israel's sages as the Ashuri script (Assyrian script), since its origins were alleged to be from Assyria. Various "styles" (in current terms, "fonts") of representation of the letters exist. There is also a cursive Hebrew script, which has also varied over time and place.
The Hebrew alphabet has 22 letters. It does not have case, but five letters have different forms when used at the end of a word. Hebrew is written from right to left. Originally, the alphabet was an abjad consisting only of consonants. As with other abjads, such as the Arabic alphabet, scribes later devised means of indicating vowel sounds by separate vowel points, known in Hebrew as niqqud. In rabbinic Hebrew, the letters א ה ו י are also used as matres lectionis (the use of certain consonants to indicate a vowel) to represent vowels. When used to write Yiddish, the writing system is a true alphabet (except for borrowed Hebrew words). In modern usage of the alphabet, as in the case of Yiddish (except that ע replaces ה) and to some extent modern Israeli Hebrew, vowels may be indicated. Today, the trend is toward full spelling with these letters acting as true vowels.
Hebrew doesn't work like any other language on Earth.
Every letter of the Hebrew alphabet has a unique meaning, and this allows speakers to piece together words in a way that resembles the chemical language, where symbols directly represent substances. In this video, we explore the fascinating world of Hebrew letter meanings and how they can help us understand the essence of words.
For example, the letter bet means a house, and this can be seen in words like "bayit" (house) and "beit knesset" (synagogue, literally "house of assembly"). Similarly, the letter nun means a seed, and this can be seen in words like "netzer" (shoot, sprout) and "gan" (garden).
This unique feature of the Hebrew alphabet has fascinated scholars and speakers for centuries, and it continues to be a rich source of...

This unique feature of the Hebrew alphabet has fascinated scholars and speakers for centuries, and it continues to be a rich source of exploration and discovery.
Sometimes I forget that the concept of the alphabet was invented by the Canaanite people. Most other written language forms were pictographic at the time (i.e. to represent a man, you draw a stick figure of a man). But when the Canaanites developed the alphabet, they created a more abstract system that used individual letters to represent sounds. However, because the Hebrew language evolved from this more visual form of communication, it maintained some aspects of the pictographic writing system. This means that the Hebrew letters not only represent sounds, but also carry deeper meanings and symbolisms. In contrast, when the Greeks and Romans later adopted the technology of the alphabet, they removed many of these dimensions, reducing it to a simple system of arbitrary symbols that represent arbitrary sounds.
Whether you're a language lover, a student of Hebrew, or just curious about the world around you, this video is sure to spark your imagination and leave you with a deeper appreciation for the beauty and complexity of language. I will say, I don't think that every single word in modern Hebrew can be broken down and analyzed using these techniques, but this concept does at least exist as a poetic ideal of the language; that you should be able to look at the symbols of word and understand the substance.

In the United States, the display of the Ten Commandments in public spaces has been seen as a symbol of the country's religious and cultural heritage.
However, it's worth noting that there are significant differences between the Christian and Jewish versions of the Ten Commandments.
For starters, in English, they are commonly referred to as the Ten Commandments, but in Hebrew, they are called the Ten Sayings, or "Aseret Hadibrot/Hadevarim." This is a translation the ancient Greek agreed with when they called it the DEKALOG (10 Words) as well as the Latin Vulgate (Verba Decem). Even in the 1500's William Tyndale is still referring to this list as the "10 Verses" which is much more neutral. Then with the King James Version we have this curious switch to The 10 "Commandments." Now why would a king who is sponsoring a translation of the Bible in order to cement his political power be interested in rebranding this list as The 10 Commandments? 🤔....
Beyond the name, there are many fascinating differences between individual items on the list as well as their popular interpretations....

This unique feature of the Hebrew alphabet has fascinated scholars and speakers for centuries, and it continues to be a rich source of exploration and discovery.

A Jerusalem Lights Special Presentation
How, where and when did humanity develop the ability to communicate through the written word? Whom can be credited with 'inventing' the alphabet? What was the original script featured on the Ten Commandments, and in which the Torah was written? In Part One of this new and unprecedented documentary, 'Secrets of the Hebrew Alphabet', Jerusalem Lights' Hillel Richman, archeologist and Biblical researcher, presents a fascinating, scholarly and original exploration of the origins of mankind's alphabet in general, and the Hebrew alphabet in particular.
Stay tuned for the forthcoming Part Two, entitled Secrets of the Hebrew Alphabet: Transformation, which will reveal why and when the script of Hebrew language was changed to its present form as we recognize it today , known as the Assyrian script.

7 Surprising Differences between the Christian and Jewish versions of The Decalogue.
Today I'm at the largest version of the 10 Commandments in the World! (Fields of the Wood in Murphy, North Carolina). The tablets are over 300 feet wide and 600 feet tall, and (Each individual letter is roughly 3 feet wide and 4 feet tall)
Even though they are thousands of years old, the Ten Commandments continue to be an influential document in both the Christian and Jewish traditions, and it has been adopted by many cultures as a cornerstone of their moral and legal systems.
