The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift in Scotland, connecting the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. The lift, named after the nearby town of Falkirk in central Scotland, opened in 2002. It reconnects the two canals for the first time since the 1930s as part of the Millennium Link project.
The wheel raises boats by 24 metres (79ft), but the Union Canal is still 11 metres (36ft) higher than the aqueduct which meets the wheel. Boats must also pass through a pair of locks between the top of the wheel and the Union Canal. The Falkirk Wheel is the only rotating boat lift of its kind in the world, and one of two working boat lifts in the United Kingdom, the other being the Anderton boat lift.
The town lies at the junction of the Forth and Clyde Canal and the Union Canal, a location which proved key to the growth of Falkirk as a centre of heavy industry during the Industrial Revolution. In the 18th and 19th centuries Falkirk was at the centre of the iron and steel industry, underpinned by the Carron Company in the nearby village of Carron. The company was responsible for making carronades for the Royal Navy and also later many pillar boxes. In the last 50 years heavy industry has waned, and the economy of the town relies increasingly on retail and tourism. Despite this, Falkirk remains the home of many international companies like Alexander Dennis, the largest bus production company in the United Kingdom.
From 2003–2007 the Council was led by an SNP/Independent coalition, but after the 2007 elections a Labour/Ind coalition of 16 councillors equalled the SNP/ Tory/ Independent 16, so a pack of cards was cut. Labour's card was higher than the SNP's. To form a stable administration Labour then formed a coalition with the 4 members of the Conservative and Independent Partnership. This Labour/Conservative /Independent coalition hold 18 seats compared to the 13 SNP and 1 non-aligned Independent. The leader of the administration is Councillor Craig Martin.
Edinburgh, the country's capital and second-largest city, was the hub of the Scottish Enlightenment of the 18th century, which transformed Scotland into one of the commercial, intellectual, and industrial powerhouses of Europe. Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, was once one of the world's leading industrial cities and now lies at the centre of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. Scottish waters consist of a large sector of the North Atlantic and the North Sea, containing the largest oil reserves in the European Union. This has given Aberdeen, the third-largest city in Scotland, the title of Europe's oil capital.
Burnside Avenue is a main thoroughfare connecting East Hartford, Connecticut's Main Street to Manchester, Connecticut. The road is part of U.S. Route 44. It runs through a low income portion of East Hartford and is home to a significant population of Hispanics and African Americans. East Hartford Middle school is located near the center of the avenue and is next to the main campus of Goodwin College. The eastern portion of Burnside Avenue has little housing, but is significantly developed with strip malls and restaurants. The Avenue is home to two important parks in East Hartford. Martin Park in the west has a swimming pool and a skating park along with access to many of East Hartford's bike trails. The east of the avenue has an entrance to Wickham Park, a large private park containing an aviary, bike trails, hiking trails, picnic grounds, and a view of Hartford's skyline.
Before the turn of the 20th century, Burnside was colloquially considered a separate village from the rest of East Hartford. Its rough terrain and proximity to the Hockanum river led to early artifice, so that even before the industrial revolution, it was dominated by paper mills. By 1900, Burnside was developing as a streetcar suburb. Its development prior to Pratt and Whitney (1929) explains its high density relative to the post-war housing so prevalent in the remainder of the town.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 18.7square miles (48.3km²), of which, 18.6square miles (48.2km²) of it is land and 0.1square miles (0.1km²) of it (0.27%) is water. It was incorporated in 1857.
History
In 1700 Isaac Magoon purchased 1,950 acres (7.9km2) of land from then Windham and thus began Scotland’s History. He named the town Scotland as a way of commemorating his ancestral home. Scotland was incorporated in May 1857.
Government
The town still maintains the town meeting as its form of government with a board of selectmen. The town also has eight boards & commissions, including Inlands & Wetlands, Planning & Zoning and Board of Education.
Attractions
Scotland is home to the D'Elia Antique Tool Museum. The museum was built in 2005 and is housed in the same building as the Scotland Public Library. It is the home of over 1200 antique woodworking planes dating back to the mid-18th century. Another attraction is the Samuel Huntington house which located on Huntington Rd or Route 14

Falkirk Wheel
The Falkirk Wheel is the only fully rotating boat lift in the world. The wheel was built as part of the £85.4m Millennium link project to reunite the Forth and Clyde and Union Canals in Scotland. The canals had previously been linked by a staircase of 11 locks which took nearly a day to pass through. The locks were dismantled in 1933.
The wheel uses 2 gondolas which raise boats by 24m. As the Union Canal is 11m higher than the aqueduct at the top of the wheel, boats then go through 2 locks to reach the canal.
Before the Falkirk Wheel was constructed it wasn’t possible to get from the Union Canal to the Forth and Clyde by boat. It now takes about 10 minutes for a boat to be lifted from the Forth and Clyde to the aqueduct 24m above that leads to the Union Canal.

Falkirk Wheel
AS SEEN ON SKYEYE BRITAIN - LAUNCHING IN EARLY 2013! - www.skyeye-app.com
This is canal engineering brought bang up to date in a spectacular rotating boat lift. By the 1930s eleven locks, which joined the Forth and Clyde and Union Canals, had been filled in and built on. In a millennium project to link the two canals again the futuristic wheel won the competition, and was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 2002.

Archimedes and a Boat Lift: the Falkirk Wheel

The town of Falkirk stands in an essential position at the heart of central Scotland between Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling. This position has ensured its central role in Scottish history from the Roman period till today.
Over the centuries the town has given its name to two local battles. The First Battle of Falkirk occurred in 1298 between the armies of William Wallace and Edward I of England. The Second Battle of Falkirk took place on 1746 and is significant as the penultimate battle of the period known as the Jacobite Risings.

The Helix Park is The Home of The Kelpies - the largest equine sculpture in the world. Standing at 100ft tall and weighing more than 300 tonnes each, the magical Kelpies are an artificial wonder and a feat of engineering. The Kelpies represent the lineage of the heavy horse of Scottish industry and economy, pulling the wagons, & coal ships that shaped the geographical layout of Falkirk.

The Falkirk Wheel, is the world's only rotating boat lift. But why is it so unique? Why is it so beautiful? And why is it needed?
The Falkirk Wheel is a functional work of art that joins the Union Canal to the Forth and Clyde Canal, connecting waterways between Edinburgh, Falkirk and Glasgow.

A timelapse movie of the Falkirk wheel in Scotland, the world's first and only rotating boat lift. At one time these two canals were joined by a series of 11 locks which took half a day to traverse. Now it can be done in 7 minutes!

The Falkirk Wheel is the only rotating boat lift of its kind in the world, and one of two working boat lifts in the United Kingdom, the other being the Anderton boat lift.
http://tomscott.com - http://twitter.com/tomscott - The Falkirk Wheel sits between Edinburgh and Glasgow, in the southern parts of Scotland, and it's the world's only rotating boat lift. There's some very clever design going on here -- and some physics that goes all the way back to Ancient Greece.
How does the Falkirk Wheel boat lift work? In this video, we'll take you on a boat trip to experience the Falkirk Wheel where we'll show you how and why it was built and how it works with a little help from Archimedes. We'll also show you the amazing Roughcastle Tunnel with it's 'trippy' light show and Falkirk's new staircase locks.

The Falkirk Wheel is an innovative and unique rotating boat lift connecting the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. I had to speed this up to 6x per Tim's suggestion. Thanks, Tim.
Thanks to Trevor and Kathleen for taking us to see the Falkirk Wheel. Tim, Shannon, Deirdre, and I really enjoyed the day in the Scottish countryside.

Falkirk is a beautiful town to visit, you can walk chunks of two canals, and explore its chill city centre atmosphere. Falkirk is the ideal place to visit with kids as its attractions have much to offer.

Jerry Jeff Walker If I took a rollin' wheel And rolled it ten times round Would it travel far from here Or would it just go round Round and Round As a young boy I helped the old man Workin' in the fields And everyday, we hauled the hay To the rollin' of the wheels 'Til one day the tractor laid The old man down to the ground The tractor pitched him into a ditch and Left a dusty sound Of the wheel that kept spinnin' round The wheel that kept spinnin' round CHORUS: Rollin' wheel, rollin' on Takin' us all on our way Rollin' wheel, rollin' on Takin back all that they gave Takin' us all on our way Takin' back all that they save I've never knew my father well The war called him too soon Said he was an officer Saw some pictures in my room The letter said he was reported dead Near the front lines he'd been found A mine blew his jeep into a twisted heep And I still hear the sound Of the wheel that kept spinnin' round. Rollin' wheel, rollin' on Takin' us all on our way Rollin' wheels, rollin' on Takin' us all to the grave Takin' back all that they save Takin' us all on our way My brother chased a dream of wheels His whole life geared for the race As soon as he could, he drove off for good His whole life was short, quick, and straight He only lived to spin those wheels And make that move over ground 'Til the steering failed and he crashed the rail And he laid there still for the sounds Of the wheel that kept spinning round. Rollin' wheel, they're rollin' on Takin' us all on our way The rollin' wheels, rollin' on Takin' back all that they gave Takin' us all on our way Takin' back all that they say As for me, my life's too short The wheel has carried my far Around this world 100 times By bus, truck, train, bike , or car (???) And just like the rest I roll on to my death On a country road far from town I stare by the wheel just as sure as I feel That there won't be but one sound That's the wheel that keeps spinning round Yeah the wheel that keeps spinning round Rollin wheels, rollin' on Takin us all on our way The rollin' wheels, rollin' on Takin' back all that they say Takin us all on our way Takin' us all on our way The rollin' wheels, yeah rollin' on Takin' back all that they gave
