During his long career Rota was an extraordinarily prolific composer, especially of music for the cinema. He wrote more than 150 scores for Italian and international productions from the 1930s until his death in 1979—an average of three scores each year over a 46-year period, and in his most productive period from the late 1940s to the mid-1950s he wrote as many as ten scores every year, and sometimes more, with a remarkable thirteen film scores to his credit in 1954. Alongside this great body of film work, he composed ten operas, five ballets and dozens of other orchestral, choral and chamber works, the best known being his string concerto. He also composed the music for many theatre productions by Visconti, Zeffirelli and Eduardo De Filippo as well as maintaining a long teaching career at the Liceo Musicale in Bari, Italy, where he was the director for almost 30 years.
Mercutio (/mərˈkjuːʃioʊ/,mur-KEW-shee-o) is a fictional character in William Shakespeare's 1597 tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. He is a close friend to Romeo and a blood relative to Prince Escalus and Count Paris. As such, being neither a Montague nor a Capulet, Mercutio is one of the few in Verona with the ability to mingle around those of both houses, although he is friend'sBenvolio. The invitation to Capulet's party states that he has a brother named Valentine.
Role in the play
One of Romeo's closest friends, Mercutio entreats Romeo to forget about his unrequited love for a girl named Rosaline and come with him to a masquerade ball at Lord Capulet's estate. There, Mercutio and his friends become the life of the party, but Romeo steals away to Juliet, Capulet's daughter, with whom he has fallen in love, and he falls out of love with Rosaline. When Mercutio sees Romeo the next day, he is glad to see that his friend is his old self again, and he encourages Romeo, all the while making bawdy jokes at Juliet's Nurse's expense.
Tybalt is the main antagonist in William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. He is Lady Capulet's nephew, Juliet's short-tempered cousin, and Romeo's rival. Tybalt shares the same name as the character Tibert/Tybalt the "Prince of Cats" in Reynard the Fox, a point of mockery in the play. Mercutio repeatedly calls Tybalt "King of Cats" (perhaps referring not only to Reynard but to the Italian word cazzo "penis" as well). Luigi da Porto adapted the story as Giulietta e Romeo and included it in his Historia novellamente ritrovata di due Nobili Amanti published in 1530. Da Porto drew on Pyramus and Thisbe and Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron. He gave it much of its modern form, including the lovers' names, the rival families of Montecchi and Capuleti, and the location in Verona. He also introduces characters corresponding to Shakespeare's Mercutio, Tybalt, and Paris. Da Porto presents his tale as historically true and claims it took place in the days of Bartolomeo II della Scala (a century earlier than Salernitano). Montague and Capulet were actual 13th-century political factions, but the only connection between them is a mention in Dante'sPurgatorio as an example of civil dissension.

Prokofiev 'Duel and Death of Tybalt' ('Romeo & Juliet') - Slatkin conducts
During his tenure as Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony, Leonard Slatkin devoted the second half of one of his 2003 Proms concerts to a selection of numbers from Prokofiev's ballet 'Romeo and Juliet.' What is a youth? Impetuous fire. What is a maid? Ice and desire. The world wags on A rose will bloom, it then will fade So does a youth. So does the fairest maid. Comes a time when one sweet smile Has its season for awhile Then Love's in love with me Some may think only to marry. Others will tease and tarry. Mine is the very best parry, Cupid he rules us all. Caper the caper; sing me the song Death will come soon to hush us along Sweeter than honey and bitter as gall, Love is a task and it never will pall. Sweeter than honey and bitter as gall, Cupid he rules us all. A rose will bloom, it then will fade. So does a youth.
