Originally built in 1952, it was reconstructed and widened in 1995 through an unusual process which greatly reduced the time the important commuter artery was out-of-service from conventional methods. The current 3,750-foot (1,140Â m)-long double-swing-span bridge carries U.S. Route 17, a four-lane arterial highway. The movable span is needed to allow ship access to several military installations that are upstream of the bridge, most notably, the U.S. Navy's Naval Weapons Station Yorktown. The roadways are almost 90 feet (27Â m) above the river at the highest point of the bridge. The bridge is the largest double-swing-span bridge in the United States, and second largest in the world.
Coleman Bridge is a historic Ball-patent pipe pony truss bridge in Windsor, Massachusetts. It is the only known surviving in situ bridge of its type in Massachusetts. It is located on an abandoned stretch of Windsor Bush Road which crosses Phelps Brook in what is now a remote upland section of Windsor. The bridge was located near farms owned by the Coleman family, giving the bridge its name. The bridge type was invented by Charles H. Ball, an entrepreneur from nearby Peru who developed the idea of using pipes as structural elements of bridges over smaller bodies of water. Only three instances are known to exist, two of which were (as of 2000) disassembled and in storage.
The bridge was built in 1894 on the site where there had previously been a wooden bridge, and spans 31 feet (9.4Â m). The top cords of the pony truss are pipes 5.75 inches (14.6Â cm) in diameter, with doubled iron rods functioning as the truss's bottom chord. The bridge originally had wooden stringers, which were at some point replaced by iron ones. The wooden floor of the bridge is also a replacement. The bridge is accessible on foot. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

Uncle Jack, when i look back, sent a lot down to me. my mom would say we both seemed to be the life of the party. he was a picker, and a drinker. he took one step over the edge. a drinker, and he ended up with some debt i guess. nobody knows what really happened. the river was swollen when they found him in it, and it rained all weekend on the bridge leaving town. this is how i see it. this is not something i was told. i envisioned it to be dark, wet, and cold. if he jumped, or if he fell, no one knows. but ive got a different picture for each one of those. i was a baby. and we never really met, its really sad, i guess. he was a musician, just like his nephew and if he couldve i wouldve wanted him to teach me. but all i ever got from him, Uncle Jack, was his need to stop drinking.
