The Circuit (TV series)

The Circuit is an Australian television drama series. The six part first season screened on SBS TV, premiering on 8 July 2007 at 9:30 pm, and concluding on 12 August 2007. Season 2 aired from 1 December 2009 through 5 January 2010, ending the series.

The series stars Aaron Pedersen and Gary Sweet and centres on mixed-race solicitor Drew Ellis (Pederson) who joins the district to work at the Kimberley Circuit Court. Filmed mainly in Broome, Western Australia and surrounding areas, the show had a budget of more than $4 million, and 1,000 local Aboriginal extras have been employed for the production.

Circuit rider (religious)

Circuit rider is a popular term referring to clergy in the earliest years of the United States who were assigned to travel around specific geographic territories to minister to settlers and organize congregations. Circuit riders were clergy in the Methodist Episcopal Church and related denominations.

History

In sparsely populated areas of the United States it always has been common for clergy in many denominations to serve more than one congregation at a time, a form of church organization sometimes called a "preaching circuit." In the contemporary United Methodist Church, a minister serving more than one church has a "(number of churches) point charge." However, in the rough frontier days of the early United States, the pattern of organization in the Methodist Episcopal denomination and its successors worked especially well in the service of rural villages and unorganized settlements. In the Methodist denominations, congregations do not "call" (or employ) a pastor of their own choice. Instead, a bishop "appoints" (assigns) a pastor to a congregation or a group of congregations, and until late in the 20th century, neither pastor nor congregation had any say in the appointment. This meant that in the early days of the United States, as the population developed, Methodist clergy could be appointed to circuits wherever people were settling.

Riding circuit

Riding circuit (or being a circuit rider) is a term in the United States for a professional who travels a regular circuit of locations to provide services. The term first came into widespread application for judges and lawyers, particularly in the sparsely populated American West, who would hold court in each town in their circuit on a regular basis, perhaps once a week or once a month. Traveling judges are now rare, but the term remains in the name circuit court, commonly applied to levels of court that oversee many lower district courts. It has been proposed that U.S. Supreme Court justices should ride circuit.

The Circuit Rider

The Circuit Rider is a bronze sculpture by Alexander Phimister Proctor, located in Capitol Park, east of the Oregon State Capitol in Salem, Oregon, in the United States.

Description and history

According to the Springfield Museum, The Circuit Rider depicts "one of Oregon's pioneer circuit-riding Methodist ministers" and commemorates "the labors and achievements of the ministers of the Gospel, who as circuit riders became the friends, counselors and evengels to the pioneers on every American frontier." The Oregon Blue Book says the equestrian statue is "symbolic of the many missionaries who came to Oregon".

The 3.5-ton statue was cast by Roman Bronze Works in New York and was gifted to the State of Oregon in 1924. It was presented "in reverent and grateful remembrance of Robert Booth, pioneer minister of the Oregon Country" by his son, Robert Asbury Booth, who was a prominent Eugene businessman and Oregon State Highway Commissioner. The sculpture was originally sited at the west front of the old Capitol building and was relocated during construction of the new Capitol building (c. 1936–1937). It fell off its pedestal during the Columbus Day Storm of 1962 due to high winds. In 1993, the statue was surveyed by the Smithsonian Institution's Save Outdoor Sculpture! program, which concluded that "treatment [was] needed".
