The Blade, also known as the Toledo Blade, is a daily newspaper in Toledo, Ohio, in the United States, first published on December 19, 1835.
Overview
The first issue of what was then the Toledo Blade was printed on December 19, 1835. It has been published daily since 1848 and is the oldest continuously run business in Toledo.
David Ross Locke gained national fame for the paper during the Civil War era by writing under the pen name Petroleum V. Nasby. Writing under the pen name, Locke wrote satires ranging on topics from slavery to the Civil War to temperance. President Abraham Lincoln was fond of the Nasby satires and sometimes quoted them. In 1867 Locke bought the Toledo Blade.
The paper dropped "Toledo" from its masthead in 1960.
In 2004 The Blade won the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting with a series of stories entitled "Buried Secrets, Brutal Truths". The story brought to light the story of the Tiger Force, a Vietnam fighting force that brutalized the local population. In 2006, The Blade was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize, and winner of the National Headliner Award, for breaking the scandal in Ohio known as Coingate.
Toledo (/təˈliːdoʊ/) is the county seat of Lucas County, Ohio. Toledo is in northwest Ohio, at the western end of Lake Erie bordering the state of Michigan. The city was founded by United States citizens in 1833 on the west bank of the Maumee River, and originally incorporated as part of Monroe County, Michigan Territory. It was re-founded in 1837, after conclusion of the Toledo War, when it was incorporated in Ohio.
After construction of the Miami and Erie Canal, Toledo grew quickly; it also benefited from its position on the railway line between New York City and Chicago. It has since become a city with an art community, auto assembly businesses, education, healthcare, and local sports teams. The city's glass industry has earned it the nickname, "The Glass City".
Tactical Neural Implant is an album by electro-industrial artists Front Line Assembly. Third Mind Records originally released it in 1992 on both compact-disc and LP formats. The album has also been issued by Roadrunner in a two-disc set that includes the Millennium album.
The album contains what some reviewers regard as some of Front Line Assembly's best songs, including the singles "The Blade" and "Mindphaser". The album still receives heavy play in industrial and electronic musicdance clubs and is considered "a classic among clubgoers, DJs, and musicians even now."
Release
Tactical Neural Implant sold more than 70,000 copies. It was the first Front Line Assembly album to be officially released in Japan.
Singles
Mindphaser is the first single taken from Tactical Neural Implant. The single was released April 7, 1992 on Third Mind. It includes two versions of the title track and the tracks "Toxic" and "Mutilate" that were also released as bonus tracks on the Japanese edition of the album. A promotional music video for "Mindphaser" won "Best Alternative Video" at Much Music's 1992 Canadian Music Video Awards. The award winning video was directed by Robert Lee and produced by Gary Blair Smith and took two months to make. The video depicts Front Line Assembly inserted into clips of the Japanese Science Fiction film Gunhed. The Japanese film company let Front Line Assembly use any footage of the film in exchange for the right to use any changes the band would make for themselves. The video also received airplay on MTV. "Mindphaser" was voted the sixth greatest industrial song of all time by COMA Music Magazine in their feature article "101 Greatest Industrial Songs of All Time".
The Blade is a skyscraper and the tallest building in Reading, Berkshire, England. Used for office space, it is 86 metres (282ft) tall and is visible from many places in the town. The first tenant to occupy the building was Kaplan Financial, who moved to the building from Thames Tower.
Building
The 86-metre (282ft) steel building has 14 floors above ground level; the floor-to-floor height is 3.77 metres (12.4ft). The building's façade is a curtain wall system of aluminium and glass, and the building is strengthened with a pile foundation. The spire atop the building is a lattice frame covered with rainscreen panels.
In the original 1953 broadway production, the song was performed by Rosalind Russell. A noteworthy recording of the song was made by Doris Day as part of her albums, Show Time (1960) and My Heart (2011). An additional noteworthy release was in November 2010 when it was sung by Carol Burnett and Jane Lynch on the popular U.S. television show Glee.
