It covers 2,476 hectares (6,118.32 acres) and contains areas of woodland, grassland, heath, rivers, bogs and ponds, and most of it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation. Stretching between Forest Gate in the south and Epping in the north, Epping Forest is approximately 19 kilometres (12mi) long in the north-south direction, but no more than 4 kilometres (2.5mi) from east to west at its widest point, and in most places considerably narrower. The forest lies on a ridge between the valleys of the rivers Lea and Roding; its elevation and thin gravelly soil (the result of glaciation) historically made it unsuitable for agriculture. It gives its name to the Epping Forest local government district which covers part of it.
The whole district is divided into civil parishes a majority of which, particularly in the north and east of the district are rural and sparsely populated for an area so close to London; it includes the town of Chipping Ongar
and surrounding villages. The south is more suburban and dominated by Loughton, the largest town in the district. Most of the District has a wide range of architectural styles and periods. Loughton is beside Epping Forest to the west and separated by farms, rivers and golf courses from other settlements in other directions. As an example of conserved physical geographic landscapes, the Roding Valley and Three Forests Way (one end of the Stort Valley Way and the other end connecting to the Harcamlow Way in Hatfield Forest and National Nature Reserve, Essex which is north of Epping Forest District.
The settlements here are close to, and in places (Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill) are contiguous with, London's conurbation. Although entirely outside Greater London for Eurostat statistical purposes the district is included in the Greater London Urban Area, demonstrating a degree of close economic dependence on the capital.
1974-1983: The Urban Districts of Chigwell, Epping, and Waltham Holy Cross, and in the Rural District of Epping and Ongar the civil parishes of Epping Upland, Theydon Bois, and Theydon Garnon.
1983-1997: The District of Epping Forest wards of Broadway, Buckhurst Hill East, Buckhurst Hill West, Chigwell Row, Chigwell Village, Debden Green, Epping Hemnall, Epping Lindsey, Grange Hill, High Beach, Loughton Forest, Loughton Roding, Loughton St John's, Loughton St Mary's, Paternoster, Theydon Bois, Waltham Abbey East, and Waltham Abbey West.
1997-2010: The District of Epping Forest wards of Broadway, Buckhurst Hill East, Buckhurst Hill West, Chigwell Row, Chigwell Village, Debden Green, Epping Hemnall, Epping Lindsey, Grange Hill, High Beach, Loughton Forest, Loughton Roding, Loughton St John's, Loughton St Mary's, North Weald Bassett, Paternoster, Theydon Bois, Waltham Abbey East, and Waltham Abbey West.
Selling England by the Pound is the fifth studio album from the English progressive rock band Genesis, released in October 1973 on Charisma Records. It reached number 3 in the UK and number 70 in the U.S. A single from the album, "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)" was released in February 1974 and became the band's first top 30 hit in the UK.
The album was recorded in August 1973 following the tour supporting the previous album, Foxtrot. The group set aside a short period of time to write new material, which covered a number of themes, including the loss of English folk culture and an increased American influence, which was reflected in the title. Following the album's release, the group set out on tour, where they drew an enthusiastic reception from fans.
Critics and the band have given mixed opinions of the album, though guitarist Steve Hackett has said it is his favourite Genesis record. The album has continued to sell and has reached Gold certification by the British Phonographic Industry and the Recording Industry Association of America. It was remastered for CD in 1994 and 2007. Several of the album tracks became fan favourites and featured as a regular part of the band's live setlist into the 1980s.
The Battle (French: La Bataille) is a historical novel by the French author Patrick Rambaud that was first published in 1997. The English translation by Will Hobson appeared in 2000. The book describes the 1809 Battle of Aspern-Essling between the French Empire under Napoleon and the Austrian Empire. The action in the novel follows closely historical observations and descriptions as seen from the French perspective. La Bataille is the first book of a trilogy by Rambaud about the decline of Napoleon, describing his first personal defeat in a European battle; the other two books cover Napoleon’s defeat in Russia in The Retreat and his banishment at Elba in Napoleon’s Exile.
Historical background
In the War of the Fifth Coalition Austria and Great Britain sought to reduce French dominance on the continent. Napoleon, however, succeeded militarily in Southern Germany and entered Vienna on May 13, 1809. The main Austrian army under
Archduke Charles retreated to the eastern shore of the Danube. Napoleon chose to cross the Danube south of Vienna at the Lobau island. He directed the construction of a pontoon bridge to cross to the eastern side where he occupied the villages of Aspern and Essling (today part of Vienna).
The Battle was Jones's second album following his divorce from Tammy Wynette and continued his mid-seventies commercial slide. Although it did slightly better than his previous album Memories of Us on the Billboard country album charts, reaching number 36, it was a far cry from what the singer had been accustomed to. Despite the absence of a hit single, Jones's singing is characteristically impeccable, especially on the title track, which peaked at number 14 on the singles chart. Roy Kasten of Amazon.com argues, "The extended metaphor of "The Battle," in which satin gowns become armor and tears deadly weapons, would be absurd in most hands; yet the story of a marriage disintegrating into war, but somehow finding peace, becomes transcendent in the hands of Jones..." The singer gives an equally moving vocal on David Allan Coe's "I Still Sing The Old Songs", which is topped off by producer Billy Sherrill having a lone violin playing "The Red River Valley" on the outro. The Battle also includes a song Jones wrote with Wynette called "Wean Me", in which Jones begs an unnamed woman to "Take this bottle from my hand" and laments his "childish ways," lines that may have been all too prescient for Wynette. In the liner notes to the 1999 reissue of the LP, Wynette is quoted, "It's funny, George and I have lived our life in our music. It's all there...the fans don't have to ask."

Ghosts of Epping Forest | a walk in London's forest shot in 4K
This walk starts in Loughton heading along Lincoln's Lane towards North Long Hills. We then pass Three Bridges and Fairmead, Hill Wood and follow the path beside Avey Lane to the church at High Beach. We then walk along Manor Road to the Kings Oak talking about the legends of Hangman's Hill which is said to be haunted, and also the story of John Clare's walk from the High Beach asylum to Northborough in Cambridgeshire.
From the Pillow Mounds at High Beach the walk takes us past the Epping Forest Visitor Centre, across the road to Kate's Cellar. Here I lose my bearings a bit and end up by the Robin Hood pub and Thai restaurant. I walk along Earl's Path back to Loughton Station.

(Taken from a news story concerning two rival gangs fighting over East-End Protection rights) Along the Forest Road, there's hundreds of cars - luxury cars Each has got its load of convertible bars, cutlery cars - superscars! For today is the day when they sort it out, sort it out Cause they disagree on a gangland boundary Yes, they disagree on a gangland boundary There's Willy Wright and his boys One helluva noise, that's Billy's boys! With fully-fashioned mugs, that's Little John's thugs The Barking Slugs - supersmugs! For today is the day when they sort it out, sort it out Yes these Christian soldiers fight to protect the poor East end heroes got to score in... The Battle of Epping Forest Yes it's the Battle of Epping Forest Right outside your door You ain't seen nothing like it No, you ain't seen nothing like it Not since the Civil War Coming over the hill are the boys of Bill And Johnny's lads stand very still With the thumpire's shout, they all start to clout There's no guns in this gentleman's bout Georgie moves in on the outside left With a chain flying round his head And Harold Demure, from Art Literature Nips up the nearest tree (Here come the cavalry!) Admidst the battle roar Accountants keep the score: 10-4 They've never been alone, after getting a radiophone The bluebells are ringing for Sweetmeal Sam, real ham Handing out bread and jam just like any picnic Picnic, picnic, picnic It's 5-4 on William Wright; he made his pile on Derby night When Billy was a kid, walking the streets The other kids hid - so they did! And now, after working hard in security trade, he's got it made The shops that need aid are those that haven't paid "I do my double-show quick!" said Mick the Prick, fresh out of the nick "I sell cheap holiday, the minute they leave Then a visit I pay - and does it pay!" And his friend, Liquid Len by name of Wine, Women and Wandsworth fame Said "I'm breaking the legs of the bastard that got me framed!" "I'm breaking the legs of the bastard that got me framed!" They called me the Reverend when I entered the Church unstained My employers have changed but the name has remained It all began when I went on a tour Hoping to find some furniture I followed a sign - it said "Beautiful Chest" It led to a lady who showed me her best She was taken by surprise when I quickly closed my eyes So she rang the bell, and quick as hell Bob the Nob came out on his job To see what the trouble was "Louise, is the Reverend hard to please?" "You're telling me!" "Perhaps, sir, if it's not too late We could interest you in our old-fashioned Staffordshire plate?" "Oh no, not me, I'm a man of repute." But the Devil caught hold of my soul and a voice called out "Shoot!" To save my steeple, I visited people For this I'd gone when I met Little John His name came, I understood When the judge said "You're a robbing hood." He told me of his strange foundation Conceived on sight of the Woodstock nation He'd had to hide his reputation When poor, 'twas salvation from door to door But now, with a pin-up guru every week It was Love, Peace and Truth Incorporated for all who seek He employed me as a karma mechanic, with overall charms His hands were then fit to receive, receive alms That's why we're in The Battle of Epping Forest Yes it's the Battle of Epping Forest Right outside your door We guard your souls for peanuts And we guard your shops and houses For just a little more In with a left hook is the Bethnal Green Butcher But he's countered on the right by Mick's chain-gang fight And Liquid Len, with his smashed bottle men Is lobbing Bob the Nob across the gob With his kisser in a mess, Bob seems under stress But Jones the Jug hits Len right in the mug And Harold Demure, who's still not quite sure Fires acorns from out of his sling (Here come the cavalry!) Up, up above the crowd Inside their Silver Cloud, done proud The bold and brazen brass, seen darkly through the glass The butler's got jam on his Rolls; Roy doles out the lot With tea from a silver pot just like any picnic Picnic, picnic, picnic Along the Forest Road, it's the end of the day And the Clouds roll away Each has got its load - they'll come out for the count At the break-in of day When the limos return for their final review, it's all through All they can see is the morning goo "There's no-one left alive - must be draw."
