The Battle (French: La Bataille) is a historical novel by the French author Patrick Rambaud that was first published in 1997. The English translation by Will Hobson appeared in 2000. The book describes the 1809 Battle of Aspern-Essling between the French Empire under Napoleon and the Austrian Empire. The action in the novel follows closely historical observations and descriptions as seen from the French perspective. La Bataille is the first book of a trilogy by Rambaud about the decline of Napoleon, describing his first personal defeat in a European battle; the other two books cover Napoleon’s defeat in Russia in The Retreat and his banishment at Elba in Napoleon’s Exile.
Historical background
In the War of the Fifth Coalition Austria and Great Britain sought to reduce French dominance on the continent. Napoleon, however, succeeded militarily in Southern Germany and entered Vienna on May 13, 1809. The main Austrian army under
Archduke Charles retreated to the eastern shore of the Danube. Napoleon chose to cross the Danube south of Vienna at the Lobau island. He directed the construction of a pontoon bridge to cross to the eastern side where he occupied the villages of Aspern and Essling (today part of Vienna).
The Battle was Jones's second album following his divorce from Tammy Wynette and continued his mid-seventies commercial slide. Although it did slightly better than his previous album Memories of Us on the Billboard country album charts, reaching number 36, it was a far cry from what the singer had been accustomed to. Despite the absence of a hit single, Jones's singing is characteristically impeccable, especially on the title track, which peaked at number 14 on the singles chart. Roy Kasten of Amazon.com argues, "The extended metaphor of "The Battle," in which satin gowns become armor and tears deadly weapons, would be absurd in most hands; yet the story of a marriage disintegrating into war, but somehow finding peace, becomes transcendent in the hands of Jones..." The singer gives an equally moving vocal on David Allan Coe's "I Still Sing The Old Songs", which is topped off by producer Billy Sherrill having a lone violin playing "The Red River Valley" on the outro. The Battle also includes a song Jones wrote with Wynette called "Wean Me", in which Jones begs an unnamed woman to "Take this bottle from my hand" and laments his "childish ways," lines that may have been all too prescient for Wynette. In the liner notes to the 1999 reissue of the LP, Wynette is quoted, "It's funny, George and I have lived our life in our music. It's all there...the fans don't have to ask."

If we had one opportunity, one chance just a chance to go and find ourselves (like when we were young, when we were) Best friends running through the woods and we were acting like we're lost just to get away for The weekend (just to get away) from the city We could spend tonight looking back Or we could try to find all this time spent on barely knowing who we are A child? like us, is all we need So here's our chance, our chance to make the change to become the type of people that we've Always wanted to be (we're not living by what anybody says, only living by what we've known since we) We were, we were best friends And we knew how to get away for the weekend We could spend tonight looking back Or we could try to find all this time spent on barely knowing who we are A child, like this, is all we need I found myself in the forest (in the forest) I found love in the forest We just need time to try and find ourselves again Or just time to breathe We think we need so many useless things
