The building consists of two mirror-image parallelograms, stacked one on top of the other, resulting in a three-storey 23m (75ft)cantilever on the east end of the building. The cantilever is supported by an inclined steel ‘diagrid’ structure.
A diagrid is similar in shape to a triangle and other building have used a diagrid structure, such as 30 St Mary Axe in London.
Reaction to the glass clad building has been mixed due its proximity to the Grade I listed Rylands Library which, along with the Town Hall is considered the finest piece of architecture in Manchester and one of the finest interpretations of Gothic revival in the world.
The Avenue was a rugby union stadium and training pitches in Sunbury-on-Thames that belonged to the English club London Irish since 1931 when the team purchased 11 acres (4.5ha) to establish a club there. The team moved to the Stoop Memorial Ground in 1999 and then subsequently to Madjeski Stadium in 2000, but retained The Avenue as a training venue and location for pre-season friendlies and Aviva A League matches. In 2013 the club began to train at its new, larger Hazelwood facility in the same town, including the "London Irish England Rugby Academy" and the grounds are being converted to surburban housing interspersed with some parkland.
History
The land was purchased in 1931 for £1,280 (equivalent to £77,675in 2016) to be the home stadium for London Irish, before they left in 1999 to play at the Stoop Memorial Ground. The ground then began to be used by the London Irish Amateur side. It was also used as a training venue for London Irish and venue for London Irish England Rugby Academy. At its peak, The Avenue could hold up to 6,600 spectators.London Irish played their last senior league game at The Avenue on 1 May 1999 against Saracens.
"The Avenue" is a song by Roll Deep, the group that once contained UKgrime artist Dizzee Rascal. The song samples from "Heartache Avenue", a 1983 song by The Maisonettes. The song is the first without Dizzee Rascal and it became a Top 20 hit on the UK Singles Chart, entering the chart at #11 during summer 2005.

Background
The first season was distributed primarily on Blip with the second season only on YouTube. Scott Fisher, Jacob Morris and Stéphane Paré serve as executive producers and were all in their fourth year of studying at Ryerson University.
The second season of The Avenue premiered in November 2012 with a larger concept. New characters had been added including Gregory's next door neighbor, Shannon. As well as his love interest, Jay. Aspiring fashion model, Jessica, did not return for a second season. The high drama rated web series ended in March 2013 with a reunion special. A third season is unlikely.
Controversy
Season two became a subject of controversy due to a producer yelling "This is for the show!" after Rachel stormed out during her intervention, Rachel retorted with "This my life!" Rachel later said in an episode of her web show "Vervegirl Mirror in the Bathroom" that everything that happened on the show was real to her and that she thought everyone just over dramatic when in front of a camera.
