United States presidential election, 1956
The United States presidential election of 1956 was the 43rd quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 6, 1956. The popular incumbent President, Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower, successfully ran for re-election. The election was a re-match of 1952, as Eisenhower's opponent in 1956 was Adlai Stevenson, a former Illinois governor, whom Eisenhower had defeated four years earlier.
Eisenhower was popular, although his health had become a quiet issue. Stevenson remained popular with a core of liberal Democrats, but held no office and had no real base. He (and Eisenhower) largely ignored the subject of civil rights. As the country enjoyed peace - Eisenhower had ended the Korean War - and economic growth, few doubted a successful re-election for the charismatic Eisenhower.
This was the last presidential election before the admissions of Alaska and Hawaii, which would participate for the first time as states in the 1960 presidential election. It was also the last election in which any of the major candidates was born in the 19th century, or were both renominated for a rematch of the previous presidential election.

The American (statue)
The American is a proposed 217 ft (66 m) bronze statue of a Native American, created by sculptor Shan Gray, and currently proposed for construction in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, near Tulsa.
The statue was originally proposed to be built at Holmes Peak in southeastern Osage County, located about 7 miles (11 km) northwest of downtown Tulsa and the highest point in the immediate region with an altitude of 1030 ft (314 m). The site was within the grounds of Tulsa's Centennial Botanical Garden (now called the Tulsa Botanic Garden).
According to the proposal, The American, designed in the image of an American Indian brave with a bald eagle on his shoulder, will rise 60 ft (20 m) taller than the Statue of Liberty, and will be the largest bronze statue in the world with an interior observation deck. The eagle will have an 82 ft (25 m) wingspan.
Gray, who is Osage, and has built a career on large-scale sculptures of Oklahoman sports figures such as New York Yankees pitcher Allie "Superchief" Reynolds and Heisman trophy winner Billy Vessels, conceived The American as an entry for a contest to design a statue for the dome of the Oklahoma State Capitol, which was added to the building in 2001. Initially intended for the outskirts of Oklahoma City, the Tulsa location was selected after investor disinterest. The design was enlarged for the landmark Holmes Peak site and for visitor access, and will include a visitor center and other amenities and underground access to the statue, rather than directly at the base, to preserve the natural setting.

The American is an online magazine published by the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), a conservative think tank in Washington, D.C. The magazine's primary focus is the intersection of economics and politics. Previously known as The American: A Magazine of Ideas, it was published six times annually from November 2006 to December 2008.
Origins and editorship
The American was founded in November 2006 by James K. Glassman, the former president of The Atlantic Monthly and former publisher of The New Republic, as an AEI project. It replaced the previous public-affairs magazine published by AEI, The American Enterprise. Publication of the first issue was delayed until after the November 2006 election to include election results.
In late 2007, Glassman left The American to serve as undersecretary of state for public diplomacy in the George W. Bush administration; he was succeeded as editor-in-chief by Nick Schulz, who had served as a senior editor of the young magazine since its founding; the first issue edited by Schulz was labeled March/April 2008. (Glassman and Schulz had previously collaborated on TCS Daily.) Schulz is also the DeWitt Wallace Fellow at AEI.

The 43rd Presidential election in American history took place on November 6, 1956, the day I turned negative 25. Uh-oh, we got a re-match! Dwight Eisenhower remained very popular, and his first term went fairly well, except for having a heart attack. But he had recovered from that, and decided for a second term. He was easily renominated without opposition. Richard Nixon, even if he was a bit more polarizing than Eisenhower, was also easily renominated. Eisenhower had brought the troops home from Korea and the economy remained strong. He had proven to be a strong Cold War leader as well, and he helped many Americans feel safe again. It was going to be hard for anyone to run against him.
But the Democrats tried. Adlai Stevenson, the now former governor of Illinois who ran and lost in 1952, decided to give it another go against Eisenhower. However, Estes Kefauver returned to challenge him, and did surprisingly well in early primaries. Stevenson was like, “bring it, bro,” and the two participated in the very first nationally televised presidential debate before the Florida primary. In Florida, Stevenson won a close contest, and from there he had the momentum. Stevenson won the nomination, but to get everyone fired up he decided to let the delegates choose his running mate at the Democratic convention. This made the convention pretty darn exciting, and a young Senator from Massachusetts by the name of John Kennedy got a lot of buzz. However, the Democratic Party delegates ultimately went with Kefauver as Stevenson’s running mate.
Stevenson campaigned vigorously against Eisenhower. He called for getting rid of the draft, lowering military spending, ending nuclear bomb testing (which was kind of getting out of control), and expanding social programs for the needy. As things were going pretty well for the country, Eisenhower campaigned on his record, and he won the support of many African Americans with his support of the Brown v. Board of Education ruling, which ended racial segregation in public schools.
This was the first election in which television ads dominated each campaign. Who knew that video could be such an effective medium?

The year 1952 ushered in the TV election ad wars, fighting to win the hearts and minds of Americans. With music by Irving Berlin, the highly likeable “I Like Ike" was produced by Walt Disney’s brother Roy at the Disney Studios.
Studies show that when it comes to political advertising, we feel first and think later. So the most impactful campaign ads aim for our hearts—fear, anger, hope and pride—and they run the gamut from stirring to downright dirty. I Approve This Message, an exhibition about the emotional impact of political advertising in a landscape altered by the internet, was scheduled to open at the New-York Historical Society in September 2020. The COVID-19 lockdown halted those plans, but we want to share a few of the exhibition’s ads, particularly as we head towards election day on Nov. 3, 2020.

SUMMARY:
- It's really hard to picture it, but the Statue actually arrived from France on June 17, 1885, in over 300 copper pieces. The precious cargo was traveling in 214 crates on the French ship, Isère.
- Then, American newspaper magnate Joseph Pulitzer stepped in. Even though 80% of the donations were small ones from middle-class citizens, Pulitzer managed to collect the necessary amount from over 120,000 donors.
- The Statue of Liberty is made of copper, so it was originally about the same color as a penny. According to the New York Historical Society, it turned completely green because of oxidation by 1920.
- The statue was originaly supposed to serve as a lighthouse for ships sailing into New York Harbor. And, two years after it arrived in the US, it actually became one.
- There are 16 leaves around the torch, and the monument itself is 151 feet tall. The sum of both those digits is seven as well. Clearly, that number meant a lot for the Statue's creators.
- Famous engineer Alexander Gustave Eiffel helped design the steel internal framework to keep the statue stable. It's strong enough to withstand around 600 bolts of lightning a year.
- Most people are positive it's a representation of the Roman goddess of freedom, Libertas. The widely accepted story is that Bartholdi modeled her face after his mother.
- Author and journalist, Elizabeth Mitchell, however, claims that the sculptor actually used his brother's face as a model!
- Another theory was presented by French writer Nathalie Salmon, who claims Lady Liberty was modeled after her ancestor Sarah Salmon.

The Statue of Liberty is one of the most (if not THE most) famous monuments in the world. Anyone visiting New York City can see her, but not everyone knows that Lady Liberty has her own secrets. One of them is – she might not even be a lady at all!
Or do you know, for example, that number seven meant a lot for the Statue's creators? It's easy to notice the Statue has seven spikes on its crown, symbolizing universal liberty across the seven oceans and continents. But there are less obvious references to the number seven. SUMMARY:
- It's really hard to picture it, but the Statue actually arrived from France on June 17, 1885, in over 300 copper pieces. The precious cargo was traveling in 214 crates on the French ship, Isère.
- Then, American newspaper magnate Joseph Pulitzer stepped in. Even though 80% of the donations were small ones from middle-class citizens, Pulitzer managed to collect the necessary amount from over 120,000 donors.
- The Statue of Liberty is made of copper, so it was originally about the same color as a penny. According to the New York Historical Society, it turned completely green because of oxidation by 1920.
- The statue was originaly supposed to serve as a lighthouse for ships sailing into New York Harbor. And, two years after it arrived in the US, it actually became one.
- There are 16 leaves around the torch, and the monument itself is 151 feet tall. The sum of both those digits is seven as well. Clearly, that number meant a lot for the Statue's creators.
- Famous engineer Alexander Gustave Eiffel helped design the steel internal framework to keep the statue stable. It's strong enough to withstand around 600 bolts of lightning a year.
- Most people are positive it's a representation of the Roman goddess of freedom, Libertas. The widely accepted story is that Bartholdi modeled her face after his mother.
- Author and journalist, Elizabeth Mitchell, however, claims that the sculptor actually used his brother's face as a model!
- Another theory was presented by French writer Nathalie Salmon, who claims Lady Liberty was modeled after her ancestor Sarah Salmon.

The statue was designed by Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi using a method called Repoussé. This involved making a life size plaster model first and then hammer copper sheets around it. The support structure was designed by Gustave Eiffel - the same person that helped build the Eiffel tower in Paris, France. The statue was built in Paris, France and then shipped across the ocean in 350 pieces. You can go inside the pedestal and climb the stairs, then if you have a ticket, you can climb the spiral staircase to get to the very top - The Crown. There's an emergency elevator inside just incase anything goes wrong. At one point they did allow the public into the torch but this stopped in the year 1916.

The 43rd episode in a very long series about the American presidential elections from 1788 to the present. In 1956, two intelligent progressives perhaps naively think they can take Ike and Dick down.

The 43rd Presidential election in American history took place on November 6, 1956, the day I turned negative 25. Uh-oh, we got a re-match! Dwight Eisenhower remained very popular, and his first term went fairly well, except for having a heart attack. But he had recovered from that, and decided for a second term. He was easily renominated without opposition. Richard Nixon, even if he was a bit more polarizing than Eisenhower, was also easily renominated. Eisenhower had brought the troops home from Korea and the economy remained strong. He had proven to be a strong Cold War leader as well, and he helped many Americans feel safe again. It was going to be hard for anyone to run against him.
But the Democrats tried. Adlai Stevenson, the now former governor of Illinois who ran and lost in 1952, decided to give it another go against Eisenhower. However, Estes Kefauver returned to challenge him, and did surprisingly well in early primaries. Stevenson was like, “bring it, bro,” and the two participated in the very first nationally televised presidential debate before the Florida primary. In Florida, Stevenson won a close contest, and from there he had the momentum. Stevenson won the nomination, but to get everyone fired up he decided to let the delegates choose his running mate at the Democratic convention. This made the convention pretty darn exciting, and a young Senator from Massachusetts by the name of John Kennedy got a lot of buzz. However, the Democratic Party delegates ultimately went with Kefauver as Stevenson’s running mate.
Stevenson campaigned vigorously against Eisenhower. He called for getting rid of the draft, lowering military spending, ending nuclear bomb testing (which was kind of getting out of control), and expanding social programs for the needy. As things were going pretty well for the country, Eisenhower campaigned on his record, and he won the support of many African Americans with his support of the Brown v. Board of Education ruling, which ended racial segregation in public schools.
This was the first election in which television ads dominated each campaign. Who knew that video could be such an effective medium?

Four years prior to the celebrated Kennedy/Nixon debate, Democratic primary contenders Adlai Stevenson and Estes Kefauver politely squared off in the first presidential debate conducted before television cameras.
On May 21, 1956, Miami’s ABC affiliate WTVJ broadcast a one hour meeting of these “friendly rivals,” moderated by Quincy Howe. Shown only in the Miami region, the debate took place the day after the U.S. tested its first airdropped H-bomb, at Bikini Atoll, and nuclear proliferation, racial segregation, and the balance between big and small business dominated the discussion.
Stevenson went on to win the primary but lose the election to Eisenhower. Four years later, Stevenson failed in his third attempt to gain the Democratic nomination, and the Kennedy era ushered in an ever more “connected” populace, with the expectation that politics be continually played out in the media.
The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum acquired the 16mm print of the debate from Adlai Stevenson in 1962, when he donated his papers to the Illinois State Historical Library, ALPLM’s predecessor.

The year 1952 ushered in the TV election ad wars, fighting to win the hearts and minds of Americans. With music by Irving Berlin, the highly likeable “I Like Ike" was produced by Walt Disney’s brother Roy at the Disney Studios.
Studies show that when it comes to political advertising, we feel first and think later. So the most impactful campaign ads aim for our hearts—fear, anger, hope and pride—and they run the gamut from stirring to downright dirty. I Approve This Message, an exhibition about the emotional impact of political advertising in a landscape altered by the internet, was scheduled to open at the New-York Historical Society in September 2020. The COVID-19 lockdown halted those plans, but we want to share a few of the exhibition’s ads, particularly as we head towards election day on Nov. 3, 2020.

The United States presidential election of 1956 was the 43rd quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 6, 1956. The popular incumbent President, Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower, successfully ran for re-election. The election was a re-match of 1952, as Eisenhower's opponent in 1956 was Adlai Stevenson, a former Illinois governor, whom Eisenhower had defeated four years earlier.
Eisenhower was popular, although his health had become a quiet issue. Stevenson remained popular with a core of liberal Democrats, but held no office and had no real base. He (and Eisenhower) largely ignored the subject of civil rights. As the country enjoyed peace - Eisenhower had ended the Korean War - and economic growth, few doubted a successful re-election for the charismatic Eisenhower.
This was the last presidential election before the admissions of Alaska and Hawaii, which would participate for the first time as states in the 1960 presidential election. It was also the last election in which any of the major candidates was born in the 19th century, or were both renominated for a rematch of the previous presidential election.

SUMMARY:
- It's really hard to picture it, but the Statue actually arrived from France on June 17, 1885, in over 300 copper pieces. The precious cargo was traveling in 214 crates on the French ship, Isère.
- Then, American newspaper magnate Joseph Pulitzer stepped in. Even though 80% of the donations were small ones from middle-class citizens, Pulitzer managed to collect the necessary amount from over 120,000 donors.
- The Statue of Liberty is made of copper, so it was originally about the same color as a penny. According to the New York Historical Society, it turned completely green because of oxidation by 1920.
- The statue was originaly supposed to serve as a lighthouse for ships sailing into New York Harbor. And, two years after it arrived in the US, it actually became one.
- There are 16 leaves around the torch, and the monument itself is 151 feet tall. The sum of both those digits is seven as well. Clearly, that number meant a lot for the Statue's creators.
- Famous engineer Alexander Gustave Eiffel helped design the steel internal framework to keep the statue stable. It's strong enough to withstand around 600 bolts of lightning a year.
- Most people are positive it's a representation of the Roman goddess of freedom, Libertas. The widely accepted story is that Bartholdi modeled her face after his mother.
- Author and journalist, Elizabeth Mitchell, however, claims that the sculptor actually used his brother's face as a model!
- Another theory was presented by French writer Nathalie Salmon, who claims Lady Liberty was modeled after her ancestor Sarah Salmon.

The Statue of Liberty is located on Liberty Island in New York City. It was a gift from the people of France in the year 1886. The tablet in her right hand is the declaration of independence. The statue was designed by Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi using a method called Repoussé. This involved making a life size plaster model first and then hammer copper sheets around it. The support structure was designed by Gustave Eiffel - the same person that helped build the Eiffel tower in Paris, France. The statue was built in Paris, France and then shipped across the ocean in 350 pieces. You can go inside the pedestal and climb the stairs, then if you have a ticket, you can climb the spiral staircase to get to the very top - The Crown. There's an emergency elevator inside just incase anything goes wrong. At one point they did allow the public into the torch but this stopped in the year 1916.
