18th Century Warfare: Crash Course European History #20
European powers had a lot of wars in the 18th century, and they weren't confined to Europe. Conflict raged across the globe, in what might be called a World War...but we don't call it that, because we already have a couple of those coming up in the 20th century. Some call it the Great War for Empire, and some call it a bunch of separate wars, but in any case, all this conflict was important, and you're going to learn all about it right now.

English Literature | The rise of the novel in the 18th century | Novel vs Romance
The development of the novel took place in the 18th century in England, as a result of a social and historical background which changed the country into a Parliamentary Monarchy and an industrial power during and after the so-called Stuart Era.
The new values of the middle class are opposite to the main features of the previous romance, which is compared to the modern novel in terms of characters, plot, language and setting.
Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe is considered a new pattern for the development of the novel.

A novel is a relatively long work of narrative fiction, normally written in prose form, and which is typically published as a book. The present English word for a long work of prose fiction derives from the Italian novella for "new", "news", or "short story of something new", itself from the Latin novella, a singular noun use of the neuter plural of novellus, diminutive of novus, meaning "new".
Some novelists, including Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Ann Radcliffe, John Cowper Powys, preferred the term "romance" to describe their novels.
According to Margaret Doody, the novel constitutes "a continuous and comprehensive history of about two thousand years", with its origins in the Ancient Greek and Roman novel, in Chivalric romance, and in the tradition of the Italian renaissance novella. The ancient romance form was revived by Romanticism, especially the historical romances of Walter Scott and the Gothic novel.[7] Some, including M. H. Abrams and Walter Scott, have argued that a novel is a fiction narrative that displays a realistic depiction of the state of a society, while the romance encompasses any fictitious narrative that emphasizes marvellous or uncommon incidents.
Works of fiction that include marvellous or uncommon incidents are also novels, including The Lord of The Rings,[11] To Kill a Mockingbird,[12] and Frankenstein.[13] "Romances" are works of fiction whose main emphasis is on marvellous or unusual incidents, and should not be confused with the romance novel, a type of genre fiction that focuses on romantic love.
Murasaki Shikibu's Tale of Genji, an early 11th-century Japanese text, has sometimes been described as the world's first novel, but there is considerable debate over this — there were certainly long fictional works much earlier. Spread of printed books in China led to the appearance of classical Chinese novels by the Ming dynasty (1368–1644). An early example from Europe was written in Muslim Spain by the Sufi writer Ibn Tufayl entitled Hayy ibn Yaqdhan.Later developments occurred after the invention of the printing press. Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote (the first part of which was published in 1605), is frequently cited as the first significant European novelist of the modern era. Ian Watt, in The Rise of the Novel (1957), suggested that the modern novel was born in the early 18th century.

Century of Service - NOWLIN - "The President's Own" U.S. Marine Band
Written by Capt. Ryan Nowlin, U.S. Marine Band
On Aug. 13, 1918, in Washington, D.C., 40-year-old Opha May Johnson was the first of about 300 women who initially enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve (USMCR) for service during World War I. They served in clerical and administrative positions and marched in parades. “After the Armistice the women were released from active duty by mid-1919 and transferred to the in-active reserve for the duration of their enlistment. One platoon of women Marines was called back to active duty for one day on Nov. 11, 1921, to escort the Body of the Unknown Soldier to his final resting place in Arlington National Cemetery,” said Nancy Wilt, the national historian of the Women Marines Association and Director/Curator of the Women of the Corps Collection. “I hav...

Get off the bus
The band and the boys and me
Yesterday it was Denver
Tonight it’s Memphis, Tennessee
Runnin’ off of cocaine
Couple hours of sleep
Can’t remember all the halls
Cause they look the same to me
Just out here makin’ a livin’
With this six string in my hand
And this 21st century honky tonk American band
Play just about anywhere
Draw it on down on a map
Different scene the same old jeans the same old pussy cats
Tell mama I miss her
And I’ll be back one day
I don’t think old Waylon Jennings
Would’ve even done it this way
Just out here makin’ a livin’ tryin’ to pay the record company man
And this 21st century honky tonk American band
And the wheels keep rollin’ on and on
And I hear them moanin’ that lonesome song
Ever since Hank sang to me
I knew I was born to be in a
21st century honky tonk American band
Little girl in Tallahassee said
Boy can I please you
We balled all night long
And I woke up with amnesia
Hey baby what’s your name
I’ll call you if I can
But I’m in a 21st century honky tonk American band
And the wheels keep rollin’ on and on
And I hear them moanin’ that lonesome song
Ever since Hank sang to me
I knew I was born to be in a
21st century honky tonk American band
And I feel like going home
I could sure use me a sunny day
And I know I’ve been away too long
Cause I’m the same but they’ve all changed

The Great Italian American Songbook - Italian American Legendary Artists
A perfect collection that encapsulates "The Italian American Golden Era" of Italian American music. Here you will experience the magic of these classic hits, heartfelt ballads and velvety vocals with the unparalleled artistry of these iconic crooners. So come with me and let us journey through these timeless sounds of the Great Italian American Songbook. Let's celebrate the great music of Italian-American singers from our Italian Heritage, we'll Feature all the major stars and maybe even a few you didn't know were Italian.
From 1947–1954, there were 25 Italian-Americans who had chart-topping hits in the world of American Popular Music. You may say that the Great American Songbook was shaped, at least in part, by these Italian interpreters. On these Videos/Playlist we'll salute the Italian-American crooners hearing both well-known standards as well as songs from their Italian heritage.
In the later twentieth century Italian American vocal artists continued to exert a major influence on popular culture in the United States. While famous Italian American singers such as Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, and Dean Martin, Louis Prima, Tony Bennett, Jerry Vale, Al Martino, Vic Damone, Connie Francis and let us not forget Russ Columbo (all Italian-American crooners owe a great deal of debt to, who was the first Italian-American crooner) were influenced by their Italian heritage in their English-Language recordings, recordings of Italian-language songs sometimes became hits for various American popular singers, such as the traditional song, "Santa Lucia," "O Sole Mio" and Maria Mari" by Giovanni Capurro and Eduardo di Capua, also "Volare," by Franco Migliacci and Domenico Modugno.
Italian-Americans continued to stay relevant in the industry during the late 1960’s, 1970’s, 1980’s, and even to today. Artists such as Frank Zappa, Jim Croce, Bruce Springsteen, Ronnie James Dio, Peter Criss of Kiss, Madonna, Jon Bon Jovi, and Lady Gaga are all of Italian descent.

“I have tremendous respect for the women of WWI who by the thousands lined up across the country to become members of the Marine Corps and serve a country that had not given them the right to vote,” Wilt continued. “It is amazing the service of the Salvation Army, the American Red Cross, the military women of WWI, and the thousands of other woman volunteers who harvested crops, rolled bandages, and knitted cold weather sweaters and mittens for units.”
Wilt wrote a letter to Marine Band Director Col. Jason K. Fettig to ask the Marine Band to honor the centennial with a march since the nearly 24,000 women Marines of World War II marched to Louis Saverino and Emil Grasser’s “March of the Women Marines” and the 1970s women Marines danced to Saverino’s “Women Marine Waltz.” Fettig agreed and selected Assistant Director Capt. Ryan Nowlin to musically mark the occasion. “I spent an hour and a half on the phone with her to get my musical ideas, all of which are inspired by the story of these first women Marines answering the nation’s call in 1918,” Nowlin said. “I wrote these melodies constantly rising in pitch to symbolize that always reaching, always growing, that determined spirit of these women who volunteered in 1918. It is truly an honor to write the march in recognition of the century of service of women in the United States Marine Corps.”
