The Russo-Ottoman War of 1710–11, also known as the Pruth River Campaign after the main event of the war, erupted as a consequence of the defeat of Swedish forces by the Russian Empire in the Battle of Poltava and the escape of the wounded Charles XII of Sweden to the court of the Ottoman SultanAhmed III. Following incessant Russian pressure and demands for Charles, the Ottomans declared war on Russia on 20 November 1710. Concurrently with these events, the PrinceDimitrie Cantemir of Moldavia and Peter the Great signed the Treaty of Lutsk (13 April 1711), by which Moldavia pledged to support Russia in its war against the Ottomans with troops and by allowing the Russian army to cross its territory and place garrisons in Moldavian fortresses. After having gathered near the Moldavian capital Iași, the combined army started marching southward on 11 July along the Prut River with the intention of crossing the Danube and invading the Balkan peninsula.
The Prut (also spelled in English Pruth or on maps as Prout; Romanian pronunciation:[prut], Ukrainian:Прут) is a 953km (592mi) long river in Eastern Europe. In part of its course it forms Romania's border with Moldova and Ukraine.
Overview
It was known in antiquity as the Pyretus (Ancient Greek Πυρετός), Porata (possibly),Hierasus (Ιερασός) or Gerasius. It originates on the eastern slope of Mount Hoverla, in the Carpathian Mountains in Ukraine. The Prut flows southeast eventually joining the Danube river near Reni, east of Galați.
Between 1918 and 1939 it was partly in Poland and partly in Greater Romania (Romanian: România Mare). After the German invasion of Poland in 1939 it became almost entirely Romanian. Prior to the World War I it served as a border between Romania and the Russian Empire. After World War II the river once again demarcated a border, this time between Romania and the Soviet Union. Nowadays, for a length of 695km it forms the border between Romania and Moldova. It has a hydrographic basin of 27,500km2, of which 10,990km2 are in Romania and 7,790km2 in Moldova. The biggest city along its banks is Chernivtsi, Ukraine.

In the assault, Ottoman troops successfully killed two russian generals and incur heavy losses to the Russians. The rest of the russian troops retreated to the encampment. Having lost much of his army, lack of provisions, surrounded and outnumbered by the Ottomans, forced Tzar Peter to propose a peace treaty. Surprisingly the Grand Vizier easily accepted the Tzar proposal of peace in exchange of safe passage of Swedih King to his homeland and return of several territories taken by the Russians during the war. The action of the Grand Vizier accepting the peace proposal was critized by Ottoman court as Ottoman forces, given the situation at that time, were easily took the Tzar Peter as hostage. Later the Ottoman Sultan Ahmed III dismissed Baltacı Mehmet Pasha from his post as Grand Vizier in the same year. The Swedish King, Charles XII, safely return to Sweden in 15 days-ride from Constantinople in 1714.

Pruth River Campaign
The Russo-Ottoman War of 1710–11, also known as the Pruth River Campaign after the main event of the war, erupted as a consequence of the defeat of Sweden by the Russian Empire in the Battle of Poltava in the summer of 1709 and the escape of the wounded King Charles XII of Sweden and his large retinue to the Ottoman fortress of Bender. The Great Northern War is often one of the overlooked conflicts in early modern history, despite the fact that it changed the balance of forces in Eastern Europe and led to the rise of Russia of Peter the Great, while the Swedish Empire's demise began. Alongside a number of memorable battles, this war had a number of brilliant stories and one of them is of the refugee the Swedish king Charles XII found in the Ottoman empire, which led to one of the early Russo-Turkish wars.
