Thames is an electoral ward of the Borough of Reading, in the English county of Berkshire. It is one of four wards in Caversham which describes the area in the borough on the north side of the River Thames and is immediately north of Reading town centre. It is bordered by Caversham ward and two wards in the direction of neighbouring villages, named after them, but not including them: Peppard and Mapledurham, (straddling Peppard and Mapledurham roads). Across the river is Abbey ward.
As with all wards, apart from smaller Mapledurham, it elects three councillors to Reading Borough Council. Elections since 2004 are held by thirds, with elections in three years out of four.
Results
Since the Council has adopted elections by thirds (the people electing one councillor per three-seat ward every election (2006 onwards)) the Council's records show it has been won by Conservative candidates.
In the 2004 local elections before the electoral format change, Thames was won by three Conservatives, one of whom, Rob Wilson went on to become the MP for a wider area (Reading East) including the ward from 2005 to date.
The river gives its name to three informal areas: the Thames Valley, a region of England around the river between Oxford and West London; the Thames Gateway; and the greatly overlapping Thames Estuary around the tidal Thames to the east of London and including the waterway itself. Thames Valley Police is a formal body that takes its name from the river, covering three counties.
In an alternative name, derived from its long tidal reach up to Teddington Lock in south west London, the lower reaches of the river are called the Tideway. The section of the river running through Oxford is traditionally called the Isis.
The administrative powers of the Thames Conservancy have been taken on with modifications by the Environment Agency and, in respect of the Tideway part of the river, such powers are split between the agency and the Port of London Authority.
Named for the River Thames in England, she was launched in 1938. With the outbreak of the Second World War, she was acquired by the Royal Navy in June 1940. She was based at the strategically vital naval base at Gibraltar, moving the large warships there in and out of the harbour. Her duties also included coming to the assistance of any allied ships, naval or merchant, that might be damaged and require towing to safety. If this was impossible, she would take off survivors. To protect against air attacks she was fitted with a 12-pounder anti-aircraft gun.
HMS Ark Royal
On 13 November 1941, the aircraft carrier HMSArk Royal was torpedoed some 30 miles off Gibraltar by the German submarineU-81. After damage control efforts seemed to have stabilised the subsequent flooding, the commander of Force H, Sir James Somerville sped into Gibraltar aboard the battleship HMSMalaya to organise salvage operations. The Thames and another tug, the St Day were dispatched to the scene. Thames arrived first and was able to attach a tow line to the stricken carrier. She then attempted to tow her to Gibraltar, but her efforts were foiled by the strong current flowing through the Strait of Gibraltar. Despite towing Ark Royal for nine hours at a speed of two knots, she could make little headway. Ark Royal capsized and sank the following day, 14 November, after being overwhelmed by flooding that could not be controlled.
In November 2011, it was announced that Talkback Thames would split into four brands under the parent company of FremantleMedia UK. The name Thames was revived from Thames Television after being inactive for nearly nine years.
A ward is a local authority area, typically used for electoral purposes. Wards are usually named after neighbourhoods, thoroughfares, parishes, landmarks, geographical features and in some cases historical figures connected to the area. It is common in the United States for wards to simply be numbered.
In the Republic of Ireland, urban Wards and rural District Electoral Divisions were renamed Electoral Divisions in 1994. The electoral districts for local authorities are often popularly called "wards". These consist of multiple electoral divisions, and are officially called "local electoral areas".
In the case of a municipal amalgamation, the former cities and towns that make up the new metropolis may be referred to as wards.
The Old English name derives from an occupational surname for a civil guard/keeper of the watch, or alternately as a topographical surname from the word "werd" ("marsh").
The Old Gaelic surname derives from "Mac an Bhaird" ("son of the Bard"). A bard being a story teller or poet.
The two names are completely unrelated ethnically one being Germanic and the other Celtic. The oldest public record of the surname dates to 1176. People with the surname include:

Ms Wood also identified the trust's failure to adequately monitor Maya's vital signs during her admission to the hospital's RainbowWard, and a failure to contact SouthThamesRetrievalService for support.Read More.
