TERRY BEATTY
Time Riding: 1973 to present, with a slight break for wake surfing
Type of Craft: Stand up Jet Ski®
I was born in Santa Ana, California on January 25th 1952. I attended grammar through high school in Santa Ana, Orange County. In school, my interests were sports, gym and getting to the beach whenever possible.
Shop classes were also very important to me. In Community College, I studied Fire Science. After a year and a half, I was summoned to participate in the family business.
My father was a successful service station owner, we had four Orange County service stations; two in San Clemente, one in Newport Beach and one in Santa Ana. We sold this last and best one in 1992.
As a child, our wonderful neighbor, Willard, used to take us to his place in Parker on the Colorado River to water ski. Parker and the City of Lake Havasu, Arizona in the sixties were the best. Water skiing was a big part of my life until motorcycles popped up in 1968.
I had been desert trail riding with friends for a couple of years but motocross was catching my attention beginning in 1971. Saddleback Park was close by in Orange County near the Irvine Park, so I bought a used CZ and a van, of course, and so it went.
I rode at Escape Country, OCIR (Orange County International Raceway) in Irvine, Carlsbad in North County San Diego, and Saddleback Park on Saturdays. I say rode, not raced. I was not that good and the ground is hard. Water ski crashes hurt as much as dirt bike crashes. Something needed to change.
In 1973, I was working at our Santa Ana Mobil station when a miracle took place.
The country was going through a gasoline shortage with odd and even days to buy fuel. The short story is that it was difficult for some companies to function without fuel.
One of which was Kawasaki Motors Corporation USA (KMC); then located a mile away. Some of their employees already knew us and made us an offer too good to refuse.
If we could keep them in fuel, certain items may appear on loan, such as MX bikes, street bikes, trials bikes, Jet Skis and clothing.
More importantly, many friendships were forged that continue today, forty four years later.
A couple of guys purchased 73 AB Jet Skis and were nice enough to let us ride them on the Colorado River above Blythe.
Steve Stricklin was the first person I saw ride one. “Strick”, along with his talented friends, made it look easy.
It wasn’t. After one ride, I was hooked.
The Wake of Fame awards honor those in the Personal Water Craft (PWC) community as pioneers in the sport and Water Rescue professionals who use Rescue Water Craft (RWC).
