The War on Terror (WoT), also known as the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT), refers to the international military campaign that started after the September 11 attacks on the United States.
U.S. PresidentGeorge W. Bush first used the term "War on Terror" on 20 September 2001. The Bush administration and the western media have since used the term to argue a global military, political, legal, and conceptual struggle against both organizations designated terrorist and regimes accused of supporting them. It was originally used with a particular focus on countries associated with Islamic terrorism organizations including al-Qaeda and like-minded organizations.
In 2013, President Barack Obama announced that the United States was no longer pursuing a War on Terror, as the military focus should be on specific enemies rather than a tactic. He stated, "We must define our effort not as a boundless 'Global War on Terror', but rather as a series of persistent, targeted efforts to dismantle specific networks of violent extremists that threaten America."

George HW Bush and the End of the Cold War: Crash Course US History #44
In which John Green teaches you about the end of the Cold War and the presidency of George H.W. Bush. It was neither the best of times nor the worst of times. On the domestic front, the first president Bush inherited the relative prosperity of the later Reagan years and watched that prosperity evaporate. That was about all the interest Bush 41 had, domestically, so let's move to foreign policy, which was a bigger deal at this time. The biggie was the end of the Cold War, which is the title of the video, so you know it's important. The collapse of the Soviet Union was the biggest deal of Bush's term, and history has assigned the credit to Ronald Reagan. We give the guy a break and say that he helped. He was certainly an expert in foreign policy, having been an envoy to China, ambassador to ...

America Responds to 9/11 Attacks with the War on Terror
On September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked sites in New York City, Pennsylvania and Washington DC. What began as a normal fall day in the United States ended with the loss of thousands of lives in the most deadly terrorist attacks on American soil in history. The attacks sparked a response led by the U.S. Military and a coalition of international forces that came to be known as the War on Terror.
This segment from Iowa Public Television's documentary “Iowa Soldiers Remember Afghanistan” features first-hand accounts from military and civilians who were on the ground in Afghanistan.

It didn't do much to address some of the other problems in the region, but we'll get to that in the next few weeks. Along with all this, you'll learn about Bush's actions, or lack thereof, in Somalia and the Balkans, and you'll even be given an opportunity to read Bush's lips.

Nonetheless, it's worthwhile to take a look at the America we live in right now as a way of looking back at how far we've come. Anyway, John will teach you about Obama's election, some of his policies like the Affordable Care Act, the 2009 stimulus, and the continuation of the war on terror. If you still can't reconcile a history course teaching such recent stuff, just think of this one as a current events episode.

He was certainly an expert in foreign policy, having been an envoy to China, ambassador to the United Nations, and head of the CIA. Bush also oversaw the first Gulf War, which was something of a success, in that the primary mission was accomplished, and the vast majority of the troops were home in short order. It didn't do much to address some of the other problems in the region, but we'll get to that in the next few weeks. Along with all this, you'll learn about Bush's actions, or lack thereof, in Somalia and the Balkans, and you'll even be given an opportunity to read Bush's lips.

War On Terror Explained In Minutes
Explaining the War On Terror in a quick, dramatic method. From Bush to Obama, 9/11 to London Bombings, Afghanistan to Iraq, al-Qaeda to ISIS, Bin Ladan to Saddam Hussein this is the War on Terror told with no political agenda. The aim is to inform an audience unsatisfied with non-engaging documentaries by restating the tragic events in a cinematic way. My respect to all those who have been affected by the War on Terror.
