A terraced or terrace house (UK) or townhouse (US) is a term in architecture and city planning referring to a style of medium-density housing that originated in Europe in the 16th century, where a row of identical or mirror-image houses share side walls. They are also known in some areas as row houses or linked houses.
Terrace housing can be found throughout the world, though it is in abundance in Europe and Latin America, and extensive examples can be found in North America and Australia. The Place des Vosges in Paris (1605–1612) is one of the early examples of the style. Sometimes associated with the working class, historical and reproduction terraces have increasingly become part of the process of gentrification in certain inner-city areas.
Origins and nomenclature
Though earlier Gothic ecclesiastical examples, such as Vicars' Close, Wells are known, the practice of building new domestic homes uniformly to the property line really began in the 16th century following Dutch and Belgian models and became known in English as "row" houses. "Yarmouth Rows" in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk is an example where the building fronts uniformly ran right to the property line.
Terrace (geology), a step-like landform that borders a shoreline or river floodplain
Terrace garden, an element where a raised flat paved or gravelled section overlooks a prospect
Terraced house, a style of housing where identical individual houses are cojoined into rows
Terrace (stadium), standing spectator areas, especially in Europe and South America, or the sloping portion of the outfield in a baseball stadium, not necessarily for seating, but for practical or decorative purposes
Fluvial (stream or river) terrace, natural, flat surface or surfaces that border(s) and lies above the floodplain of a stream or river
Terrace is an award-winning strategy game played by two, three, or four players on a multi-leveled 8×8 (or, more recently, 6×6) board. It is most widely known for also being a prop in the American television series Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Computer versions of the game are also available.
Rules
The game board for Terrace has either 64 or 36 squares of uniform color, arranged in L-shaped levels ("terraces") that rise stepwise from the board's lowest points in two diagonally opposite corners to its highest points in the other two corners. All pieces are shaped alike and move according to the same rules, but they are of four different sizes and vary in capturing "power." One of each player's smallest pieces has the letter "T" carved into it and has a role somewhat similar to the king in chess.
The object is to win either by moving your "T" piece from its starting point at one corner to an opposite corner, or by capturing your opponent's "T". Players can move any number of squares on the same terrace, and are allowed to jump over their own pieces. Players can move up a terrace by either going straight up or diagonally up. Players can move down a terrace by going straight down. Opponent's pieces, and even one's own pieces, may be captured by moving diagonally down. Pieces may only capture those of equal or lesser size. It is courteous to say 'Terrace' when the opponent's "T" piece is placed in jeopardy of being caught the next turn; "Terrace-Mate" should be said when the opponent's "T" piece cannot escape. In 3 and 4 player games, when a player loses his or her "T", all of their pieces are removed from the board; other players continue the game. If a player cannot make a move during his or her turn, the game is a draw, with no winner or loser.
In geology, a terrace is a step-like landform. A terrace consists of a flat or gently sloping geomorphic surface, called a tread, that is typically bounded one side by a steeper ascending slope, which is called a "riser" or "scarp." The tread and the steeper descending slope (riser or scarp) together constitute the terrace. Terraces can also consist of a tread bounded on all sides by a descending riser or scarp. A narrow terrace is often called a bench.
The sediments underlying the tread and riser of a terrace are also commonly, but incorrectly, called terraces, leading to confusion.
Terraces are formed in various ways.
Fluvial terraces
Fluvial terraces are remnants of the former floodplain of a stream or river. They are formed by the downcutting of a river or stream channel into and the abandonment and lateral erosion of its former floodplain. The downcutting, abandonment, and lateral erosion of a former floodplain can be the result of either changes in sea level, local or regional tectonic uplift; changes in local or regional climate; changes the amount of sediment being carried by the river or stream; change in discharge of the river; or a complex mixture of these and other factors. The most common sources of the variations in rivers and streams that create fluvial terraces are vegetative, geomorphic, and hydrologic responses to climate. More recently, the direct modification of rivers and streams and their watersheds by cultural processes have result in the development of terraces along many rivers and streams.
This Designer's Own Melbourne Terrace Home Uses Every Square Millimetre
At only 5m wide, this Melbourne terrace home of designer Dan Gayfer needed to make use of every square millimetre to ensure enough space, flexibility and functionality for his family. He did this by really analysing the needs of his family, such as, did they really need a dedicated laundry room, or would they prefer more living space?
A feature of this home are the tiles used throughout, in conventional areas such as the bathrooms and kitchen splashback, but also in places you wouldn't expect them, like the rear exterior facade. There was functional reasoning behind this, for their durability and low maintenance, but also, Dan's father is a tiler and did the tiling for his own home, which is a special bond to have.

A Modern Terrace House Designed for a Family of Four (House Tour)
Sydney architects Tom Mark Henry adapted this terrace house in the inner-city suburb of Paddington to cater to the modern lives of a family of five.
Dubbed Windsor House, the terrace house was built in the 1970s and had existing features the architects wanted to preserve, including a unique street presence, a central staircase and an open floor plan.
Aside from creating physical connections between this split-level terrace house, the stair also brings light into its centre. Tom Mark Henry restructured the basement to create space for a steam room, powder room, laundry and entertainment suite and extended the stair to connect to this new level. The kitchen was then moved from one side of the house to the other to create an easy entertaining area that connects to the rear courtyard throu...

Malaysia's Extraordinary Terrace House Transformation|NJ House|Architecture|House Tour
Welcome to DESIGN SEED!
Todays episode on Design Seed we will be revealing a transformation of a 2-storey terrace house. This is an extraordinary house built by Sime Darby in 2009 but totally transformed just 10 years later by its architect owner to suit the lifestyle of her family.
The outcome of this restructured floor plan is an extraordinary transformation, where you can enjoy the natural lighting from within the property and yet be able to enjoy a view.
The house is a critical comment on all new terrace housing that rarely introduces natural ventilation and day light.
The valuable takeaway from this project is to learn and be exposed,
that the standard floor plans of most conventional properties are not crafted to suit every single household.
Or could it be, the lifestyle of to...

The kitchen was then moved from one side of the house to the other to create an easy entertaining area that connects to the rear courtyard through 3m-high steel framed doors and also connects to the new lower level.
The kitchen is at the heart of this terrace house and features a full suite of Fisher & Paykel appliances, chosen for their ease of use and streamlined aesthetic. The interior design is contemporary but in keeping with the original style of the exterior architecture, with a material palette that includes rendered walls, v-groove ceilings, timber joinery, limestone flooring, and ribbed glass to visually connect spaces.
The homeowners wanted to be able to live comfortably in the house and the furniture chosen is both contemporary and cosy.
Windsor House is a modern terrace house that is family friendly and stylish.
Windsor Terrace House also features across 16 pages in Issue No. 5 of The Local Project's print publication - https://thelocalproject.com.au/publication/issue-05/

Or could it be, the lifestyle of today’s habitation of Malaysian’s has evolved?
Is it time for greater attention to be emphasized into the design of the new floor plans of today’s modern development that could permit for easy personalization?
Share your comments below and let us know what are the challenges that you are facing with your property?
In our next episode, we will be knocking the doors to some hidden cafes with strong design influence which could hopefully inspire you guys and uplift the awareness and boost our Malaysian Design scene.

WELCOME TO DESIGN SEED!
In today's episode on Design Seed, we will be revealing a transformation of a 2 storey terrace house, Kokun House designed by Paperspace.
The exterior architecture highlights an exquisite detail, with an architectural façade shaped with a combination of linear outlines and organic curves.
It is clearly relatable to the given name by the architect, The Cocoon, as though the home is enveloped around by an organic form made out of concrete.
Thank you for watching!

Welcome to DESIGN SEED, we will be sharing the story of the occupation of two remarkable restaurant owners and entrepreneurs and how their personality would picture their dream home.
The evocation of this project would always echo in my head, a perfect combination among the designer whom extols the honest use of materials and the bold venturesome of flipping layouts out from the conventional.
And of course, tasteful clients who value the journey of architecture and design exploration.
This episode is a collaboration between Design Seed & Atelier International and we hope to boost an awareness to the design scene.

Welcome to DESIGN SEED, in this episode, we are about to reveal an astonishing hidden gem called The Concrete House in the township of Petaling Jaya, Malaysia,
An interesting way of getting lighting, they left their both side of the house a one metre gap. Day light coming into the house from the side and window allows natural ventilation coming in to the house. It’s a superb design.
