Culture in the Low Countries at the end of the 15th century was influenced by the Italian Renaissance, through trade via Bruges which made Flanders wealthy. Its nobles commissioned artists who became known across Europe. In science, the anatomistAndreas Vesalius led the way; in cartography, Gerardus Mercator's map assisted explorers and navigators. In art, Dutch and Flemish Renaissance painting went from the strange work of Hieronymus Bosch to the everyday life of Pieter Brueghel the Elder. In architecture, music and literature too, the culture of the Low Countries moved into the Renaissance style.
Geopolitical situation and background
In 1500 the Seventeen Provinces were in a personal union under the Burgundian Dukes, and with the Flemish cities as centers of gravity, culturally and economically formed one of the richest parts of Europe. During the course of the century the region also experienced significant changes. The union with Spain under Charles V, Humanism and Reformation led to a rebellion against the Spanish rule and the start of the religious war. By the end of the 16th century the northern and Southern Netherlands were effectively split. While this fracture was reflected in the visual arts by the Dutch Golden Age in the north and the Flemish Baroque in the south, other areas of thought remained associated with 16th century currents of Renaissance thought. Gradually, the balance of power shifted away from the Southern Netherlands, which remained under Spanish authority, to the emerging Dutch Republic.
The Low Countries (Dutch: de Lage Landen, French: les Pays-Bas) is a coastal region in western Europe, consisting especially of the Netherlands and Belgium, and the low-lying delta of the Rhine, Meuse, Scheldt, and Ems rivers where much of the land is at or below sea level. This wide area of Northern Europe roughly stretches from French Gravelines and Dunkirk at its southwestern point, to the area of Dutch Delfzijl and German Eastern Frisia at its northeastern point, and to Luxembourg and French Thionville in the southeast.
Most of the Low Countries are coastal regions bounded by the North Sea or the English Channel. The countries without access to the sea have linked themselves politically and economically to those with access to form one union of port and hinterland.
The Low Countries were the scene of the early northern towns, newly built rather than developed from ancient centres, that marked the reawakening of Europe in the 12th century. In that period, they rivaled northern Italy for the most densely populated region of Europe. Most of the cities were governed by guilds and councils along with a figurehead ruler; interaction with their ruler was regulated by a strict set of rules describing what the latter could and could not expect from them. All of the regions mainly depended on trade, manufacturing and the encouragement of the free flow of goods and craftsmen.

Why Isn't Belgium Part of the Netherlands? | History of the Low Countries 100 AD - 1815
Belgium and the Netherlands are two of the three countries in Western Europe that make up the Low Countries. In many ways the two are very similar, and historically at different periods in history large parts of both were ruled by the same political entities including the Roman Empire, the Frankish Empire, the Burgundian Netherlands, the Habsburg Netherlands, The Spanish Empire, and finally the Kingdom of the United Netherlands. But today the two are independent of one another despite the many cultural similarities and shared history. In this three part series I will be looking at how Belgium became independent from the Netherlands starting with this episode on the historical context of the two countries.

I'm not alone today as this video is brought to you in collaboration with Mr Beat, a fellow Youtuber who makes all sorts of videos explaining history, politics and generally interesting things. He has a video up on his channel all about comparing the Netherlands and Belgium today - check it out:

And if I lose control, I will see you in Hell, Let me fall apart when I see you go, And when she feels the low She gets higher than Mars, And dances to the sound, From the beats in our hearts If she flies away today could my heart withstand the break, Does the low beat the way to your heart She'll take your breath away, Like the light takes the Stars, The wind that moves the waves, To the sea she goes And when she feels the low, She gets higher than Mars, And dances to the sounds, From the beats in our hearts If she flies away today could my heart withstand the break, Does the low beat the way to your heart If she flies away today could my heart withstand the break, Does the low beat the way to your heart I will stay the highest If she danced away today could my heart withstand the break, Does the low beat the way to your heart If she flies away today could my heart withstand the break, Does the low beat the way to your heart Does the low beat the way to your heart
