Building the Future - Terence Conran
For our second episode of the ‘Building the Future’ series, celebrated designer Sir Terence Conran recalls meeting Norman Foster on numerous social occasions. From these repeated encounters a lasting friendship would grow and develop, founded upon Conran’s admiration of Foster’s clear abilities. These were typified by a drawing of rooftops, overlooked from a house in France, which conveyed Foster’s “huge attention to detail”, and for Conran stood comparison to the work of David Hockney.
On the subject of maintaining an architectural practice, Conran declares his great admiration for model making. The ability to examine a design from every direction, and to make architectural decisions based upon a model, is a facet Conran strongly associates with Norman Foster’s working method.

Bryanston School: What is success? Sir Terence Conran (Connaught '48)
What is success? At Bryanston we value talent in all its forms and know that success is as individual as our pupils are.
We asked Old Bryanstonians from a wide range of professions to tell us what success means to them personally. The resulting series of films shows the variety of successes our alumni have enjoyed and suggests that success is rarely about the material side of life.
Many of the interviewees go on to explain the part that Bryanston played in helping them to realise their potential.
Music: Beethoven, Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major Op. 15 - Allegro con brio. Performed by the Bryanston School Orchestra (soloist: Alexander Coplan).

Sir Terence Conran (4 October 1931 – 12 September 2020)
We had the great privilege of working on this video production, as part of our creative collaboration with The Design Museum.
Just a few hours in the presence of this remarkable person (designer, philanthropist, innovator, businessman and so much more...) gave us an instant insight into Terence Conran's work and the universe he helped forge - DESIGN - and how British Design specifically contributed to (and more than often influenced) modern day creatives around the world.
Sir Terence was a visionary and the founder of The Design Museum a place of great inspiration and equally visionary exhibitions.
We're very grateful and proud to have worked on this short film.

A helicopter flight over the City of London provided the two friends with an apposite moment to discuss the planning of this complex urban settlement, and anticipate the most suitable locations to position tall buildings. This discussion was to prove prescient, given Norman Foster’s numerous contributions to this urban fabric.
Conran contrasts this with a lack of understanding shown to the potential of fine architecture and design by those in authority. He reasons that the best qualities of design are built on the achievements of such individuals as Norman Foster; an architect who few can compete with, but whose works “make the world a better place”.

Globe-Trotter is proud to partner with The Conran Shop to launch an exclusive limited-edition suitcase to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the store in Tokyo, Japan.
Globe-Trotter’s original suitcase designs have been ingeniously customised by Sir Terence Conran, one of the most established and influential British designers of his generation. The collection celebrates his love of travel and documents his journeys through an inspired series of illustrations incorporated into the suitcase’s design.
As an admirer and owner of Globe-Trotter’s iconic luggage, Sir Terence has respectfully retained the design of the brand’s oldest range, known simply as The Original (a continuation of the company’s very first model, dating back to 1897), supplementing it with natural leather handles as well as updating the lining of the suitcase base in the distinctive ‘Conran Blue’ (Pantone 072c) shade – the emblematic hue associated with The Conran Shop throughout the years.
Adorning the suitcase lid is a tiled illustration that incorporates a visual travel diary of the various memorable journeys Sir Terence has undertaken throughout his career. Tiles featuring drawings relating to memories of exotic locales – from his villa in the south of France to further afield – are interspersed with blacked-out ones, symbolising sleep and rest periods.
Sir Terence Conran says "I have always been seduced by the romance and glamour of travel from the 1920s and 30s and my luggage absolutely from the Globe-Trotter range. They are modern classics that look great, are incredibly hard wearing and have always served me well on my travels. That is why I was so ecstatic when they approached me to design a special edition to coincide with the 25th anniversary of The Conran Shop in Japan. It was such a great project to work on and through my choice of colours and simple, playful sketch I have tried to capture the joy and fun I have always taken from my own travels and adventure. I hope this limited-edition item of luggage gives people decades of pleasure and proves to be a happy companion as people travel the globe."
Globe-Trotter designer, Charlotte Seddon says, ‘It’s been a dream and privilege to collaborate with Sir Terence Conran who is such a pioneer of design. I particularly loved how Sir Terence translated his traveling tales by beginning his journey from his front door at Barton Court, expressing this through a charming illustration inside the lid of the case. To me, this case is a piece of art.’
Globe-Trotter’s reputable suitcase has truly been given the design seal of approval – with a much-awaited drawing and customisation by one of Britain’s most heralded designers.
