The Curse of Tippecanoe is the supposed pattern of deaths in office of every single American President elected in a year ending in zero going back to the 1840 election. But is it truly a curse? Or just...ya know...another weird series of coincidences.
In 1840, William Henry Harrison does get elected President, but after just 31 days in office, dies from pneumonia. He is the first American President in history to die while in office. Flash forward 20 years later, and
Abraham Lincoln is elected President. Lincoln is assassinated after being re-elected on April 15, 1865. He is the first American President in history to be assassinated. 20 years after Lincoln is first elected, James Garfield is elected President. Garfield is the second President assassinated, on September 19, 1881. 20 years after Garfield is elected, William McKinley is re-elected President. He is the third President assassinated, on September 14, 1901. 20 years after McKinley is re-elected, Warren Harding is elected President. Harding dies of a heart attack on August 2, 1923. 20 years after Harding was elected President, Franklin Roosevelt is re-elected for an unprecedented third term. On April 12, 1945, after being re-elected an unprecedented FOURTH term, he dies of cerebral hemorrhage. 20 years after Roosevelt is re-elected a third time, John F. Kennedy is elected President. Kennedy is the fourth President assassinated, on November 22, 1963. 20 years after Kennedy is elected, Ronald Reagan is elected President. Reagan is assassinated on March 30, 1981.
Wait hold up. Reagan didn’t die because of that shooting. He survived the shooting! The curse is broken!
So obviously there are a lot of coincidences here, but there are plenty of folks who criticize the so-called Curse of Tippecanoe.
There are logical fallacies left and right. This supposed curse is an example of confusing correlation with causation, cherry picking information to fit a narrative, and moving the goalposts in order to make the narrative work. This is a similar case to all those Lincoln-JFK coincidences. While the Curse of Tippecanoe is fascinating, the closer you look at it, the less fascinating it becomes. For example, what about Zachary Taylor? He died while in office but was elected in 1848. What about the fact that FDR was still in office LONGER THAN ANY OTHER PRESIDENT AND LITERALLY DID MORE AND HAD MORE OF AN EFFECT ON THE COUNTRY THAN ANY OTHER PRESIDENT? What about the fact that all the Presidents died in different ways and in different situations?

Today's Daily Dose short military history film covers the Battle of Tippecanoe, which was a decisive victory for future president William Henry Harrison during the Indian Wars. The filmmaker has included the original voice over script to further assist your understanding:
Today on The Daily Dose, The Battle of Tippecanoe.
Following the 1809 Treaty of Fort Wayne, which forced Indiana tribes to sell three million acres of land to the U.S. government, Shawnee Chief Tecumseh organized an alliance of Native American tribes to beat back the rising horde of pioneers from settling on native lands. In response, Indiana Governor William Henry Harrison led some 1,000 soldiers and militiamen to destroy Tecumseh’s home village of Prophetstown, named after Tecumseh’s brother Tenskwatawa. When Harrison arrived on the evening of November 6th, 1811, he agreed to a cease fire with Tenskwatawa until Tecumseh could return home from a recruiting campaign to the Five Civilized Tribes, forcing Harrison to set up defensive positions along the banks of Burnett Creek.
During the night, Tenskwatawa incited Shawnee warriors to take up arms against the soldiers, chanting war songs and incantations that promised protection from the enemy’s bullets, despite Tecumseh’s warning not to attack soldiers until he could return home with reinforcements. At dawn the next morning, Harrison’s troops found themselves completely surrounded, and when warriors laid down a diversionary attack on the northern end of Harrison’s rectangular defensive lines, a fierce attack on the Southern flank caused a desperate pullback when two commanding officers were killed by warriors. Harrison was able to strengthen his exposed southern flank by transferring the Indiana Mounted Rifles, forcing the warriors to pull back before a second attack. Possessing superior firepower and training, Harrison’s troops won the day, while disheartened native warriors abandoned Prophetstown in a no-confidence vote against Tenskwatawa’s fill-in leadership.
The next day, Harrison burned Prophetstown to the ground, before beginning his long march back to Vincennes. Tecumseh returned to Prophetstown three months later, and when he saw his home village in ruins, the defeat ended his dream of a Native American alliance against the white man. The defeat at Tippecanoe would also lead Tecumseh into an alliance with Great Britain during the coming War of 1812, which played a key role in Britain’s early successes in the Great Lakes Region. 29 years later, during the largely issueless presidential election of 1840, Harrison’s victory at Tippecanoe propelled him into the White House, making the Battle of Tippecanoe, a major turning point during the protracted years of the American Indian Wars.
And there you have it, the Battle of Tippecanoe, today on The Daily Dose.
