Telemark skiing is a skiing technique that combines elements of Alpine and Nordic skiing. Telemark skiing is named after the Telemark region of Norway, where the discipline originated. Sondre Norheim is often credited for first demonstrating the turn in ski races, which included cross country, slalom and jumping, in Norway around 1868. Sondre Norheim also experimented with ski and binding design, introducing side cut to skis and heel bindings (like a cable).
Telemark skiing was reborn in the 1971 in the United States. Doug Buzzell, Craig Hall, Greg Dalbey, Jack Marcial, and Rick Borcovec are credited reintroducing the style after reading the book Come Ski With Me by Stein Eriksen. Telemark skiing gained popularity during the 1970s and '80s.
Telemark equipment crosses Alpine and Nordic ski gear. Generally, Telemark skiers use Alpine skis with specially designed Nordic style bindings that fix only the toe of the ski boot to the ski, thereby creating the "free heel." Telemark turns use a distinct lunging motion.
The county is located in southeastern Norway, extending from Hardangervidda to the Skagerrak coast. The coastline extends from Langesundsfjorden to Gjernestangen at the border with Aust-Agder. Telemark has a very broken and heterogeneous landscape, including many hills and valleys.
Infrastructure
The international road E18 goes through the southern parts of Telemark, namely Grenland and the municipality of Kragerø. European route 134, another important motorway and the fastest route between Oslo and Bergen, goes through the municipalities of Vinje, Tokke, Kviteseid, Seljord, Hjartdal and Notodden. RV36, stretching from Porsgrunn to Seljord, links the E18 and E134 motorways.
Telemark is well served by railways. The Sørlandsbanen runs through the traditional districts of Vestmar and Midt-Telemark, serving the municipalities of Drangedal, Nome, Bø and Sauherad. Grenland is primarily served by Vestfoldbanen, but also has connections through Bratsbergbanen which runs between Skien and Notodden.
The term "Telemark" is a term borrowed from skiing, where turn is generated by a forward leg motion. The Closed Telemark and Open Telemark are fairly similar. However the Closed Telemark ends in closed position while the Open Telemark ends in open promenade position.
Set in the Sierra Nevada's of California, Ty Dayberry showcases yet another progressive performance on telemark skis in this short film.

Bikepacking along the Telemark canal, or Telemarkskanalen, as it is known in Norway, riding for a total of 6 days in Telemark.
In late summer 2021, I had somehow convinced my editors at a newspaper magazine that it would be a good idea to write an article about riding the Telemark Canal, the more than hundred year old waterway linking the coast of southern Norway with the interior of Telemark county. It turned out my wife had some holiday left and wanted to come along, which meant bringing our Jack Russell terrier Banjo along too. Follow along as we ride our bikes deep into Telemark and back home, trying to bring back a story and photos for the reportage while enjoying the late summer in Norway.
Filmed with the Fujifilm X-T3 camera and the Fujifilm XC 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS PZ zoom lens.
