An hour at Tehachapi Loop - 3 freight trains.
Why is it a loop and not straight?
It's the grade, or how much the train gains elevation for a given distance. For example, say the train had to go up 100 meters of elevation. Now assume a 1km long rail that goes in a straight line to go up the 100m. The grade is 100m/1000m or 10% grade. Now if you take the same elevation gain (100m), and put a loop in the rail, that will lengthen the rail to say 2km. The grade is now 100m/2000m or 5%. You can see with the loop, the grade is less than if it were straight, 5% vs 10%, and the lower grade means it is not as steep for very long and heavy trains to not only go up but to go down. Saves on fuel, the need for more power and general wear and tear.

Tehachapi Loop
This video shows a freight train entering and exiting the famous Tehachapi Loop. The train is very long and the video shows it passing over itself on the nearly 3,800 foot loop. This section connects Bakersfield in the San Joaquin Valley to Mojave in Kern County. The loop allows the train to see a steady 2% gradient as it heads over the Tehachapi pass.

About Me: I moved to Tehachapi 4 years ago after living in San Francisco for 10 years. I was wanting a change from my corporate marketing job in Silicon Valley, so I went out to search for a slower paced life. I love to go hiking and camping with my dog on the weekends, but I also like to go down to LA a couple of times a month to visit museums and enjoy nice restaurants. Tehachapi is the perfect location for road trips all over this amazing state, and I am lucky I found my dream home here! (Bachelor of Arts Social Science from SJSU, Go Spartans!)
About Tehachapi: The Greater Tehachapi Area is a mountain community at the southern part of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. The elevation ranges from 4000 ft - 7000 ft for most homes here. We have lots of hiking trails, wineries, and a quaint downtown to walk around. Tehachapi is known to have 4 seasons. It usually doesn’t get as hot as the rest of Southern CA, and the snow usually doesn’t last more than a day or two. Some of the amazing wildlife here are California Condors, Elk, Deer, Hawks, Bobcats, and a lot more! Tehachapi has a variety of homes and landscapes, so you can find a mountain cabin, a farmhouse ranch, or a desert oasis to call home.

We would also like to give a special thank you to Creative Wireless for all of their help and for providing the internet service to run the Tehachapi Loop Live Cam!
It is located approximately 3/4 mile from the Tehachapi Loop hilltop which gives us a large viewing area of the Loop and surrounding areas.
The Tehachapi Loop is a 0.73-mile (1.17 km) long spiral or helix, on the Union Pacific Railroad line through Tehachapi Pass, of the Tehachapi Mountains in Kern County, south-central California. The line connects Bakersfield and the San Joaquin Valley to Mojave in the Mojave Desert. Seeing a daily average of almost 40 trains, the line is one of the busiest single-track mainlines in the world.
With its spectacular scenery, the Loop is one of the prime railfan areas in the country. There's plenty of private property in the area, and trespassers are not welcome. A good vantage point is the site of the Tehachapi Loop historical marker. In 1998, the Loop was named a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark and is now California Historical Landmark number 508.
One of the engineering feats of its day, the Loop was built by Southern Pacific Railroad beginning in 1874 and opened in 1876. Contributors to the project's construction include Arthur De Wint Foote and the project's chief engineer, William Hood.
On the loop, the track passes over itself, lessening the grade. The loop gains 77 feet (23 m) in elevation as the track climbs at a steady 2% grade. A train more than 4,000 feet (1,200 m) long thus passes over itself going around the loop. At the bottom of the loop, the track passes through Tunnel 9, the ninth tunnel built as the railroad worked from Bakersfield.
The Loop became the property of the Union Pacific in 1996, when it absorbed the Southern Pacific. BNSF Railway also uses the loop under trackage rights. Union Pacific bars passenger trains from the line, which prevents Amtrak's San Joaquin train from serving Los Angeles.

I visited the Tehachapi loop a year prior to this video and maintenance was being done on the tracks. I waited two hours and no trains passed by. This time, as soon as I pulled up, there was a train staged at the loop going down grade. I thought I would miss him as I just passed him coming down as I was driving down the highway. Luckily he stopped. As soon as I got to the overlook, a train was starting to come up grade. The result is in the video. It's like poetry in motion. It's worth mentioning the beautiful scenery just driving to the overlook and beyond, truly enjoyable. The audio was taken from another freight train that I recorded. That train was going much faster than the trains in this video, as you might be able to tell, but it works well enough for my liking. Hope you enjoy.
