A task force (TF) is a unit or formation established to work on a single defined task or activity. Originally introduced by the United States Navy, the term has now caught on for general usage and is a standard part of NATO terminology. Many non-military organizations now create "task forces" or task groups for temporary activities that might have once been performed by ad hoccommittees.
Naval
The concept of a naval task force is as old as navies, but the term came into extensive use originally by the United States Navy around the beginning of 1941, as a way to increase operational flexibility. Prior to that time the assembly of ships for naval operations was referred to as fleets, divisions, or on the smaller scale, squadrons, and flotillas.
Before World War II ships were collected into divisions derived from the Royal Navy's "division" of the line of battle in which one squadron usually remained under the direct command of the Admiral of the Fleet, one squadron was commanded by a Vice Admiral, and one by a Rear Admiral, each of the three squadrons flying different coloured flags, hence the terms flagship and flag officer. The flag of the Fleet Admiral's squadron was red, the Vice Admiral's was white and the Rear Admiral's blue. (The names "Vice" (possibly from advanced) and "Rear" might have derived from sailing positions within the line at the moment of engagement.) In the late 19th century ships were collected in numbered squadrons, which were assigned to named (such as the Asiatic Fleet) and later numbered fleets.
The Fast Carrier Task Force was the main striking force of the United States Navy in the Pacific War from January 1944 through the end of the war in August 1945. The task force was made up of several separate task groups, each typically built around three to four aircraft carriers and their supporting vessels. The support vessels were screening destroyers, cruisers, and the newly built fast battleships.
Carrier-based naval warfare
With the arrival of the fleet carriers the primary striking power of the navy was no longer in its battleship force, but with the aircraft that could be brought to battle by the carriers. The means by which the US Navy operated these carriers was developed principally by Admiral Marc Mitscher. Mitscher determined that the best defense for a carrier was its own air groups, and that carriers were more easily defended if they operated together in groups, with supporting ships along with them to aid in air defense, anti-submarine defense, and rescue of downed airmen.

Letter from marine XO:
As the Company XO (Executive Officer) for India Company, 3rd Battalion Marines, I deployed as an advanced party to Ramadi in January '06. Our company was stationed at Camp Blue Diamond, and our Battalion Command Operations Center (COC) was Hurricane Point. We established OP’s including Horea, Hawk and others. The battle of Ramadi was underway. We established good working relationships with local civilian leadership figures (sheiks) in the first part of our deployment. We worked to gain their trust and cooperation and had regular meetings.
In the middle of our deployment we were told that US SOF (Special Operations Forces) were operating in our area. We cooperated with Delta and operated with them - they showed complete professionalism and we worked together on securing the Ramadi Hospital. There was another group of SOF in our area - they were SEALs from Task Unit Bruiser. They were extremely unprofessional and consistently broke ROE’s / SOP’s (Rules of Engagement/Standard Operating Procedures) not announcing their presence arriving and/or departing our AO’s (Area of Operation) posing great risk of blue on blue [fratricide/friendly fire] scenarios.
I talked to Task Unit Bruiser’s lieutenant directly about it and was completely disrespected and ignored. Kilo Company held ground near the Government Center. It was an active area and they had OP’s (Observation Post’s) set up to beef up security. The Kilo Company XO warned myself and other leaders at our Command Operations Center that Kilo Company had been in the neighborhood East of the Government Center and witnessed the SEALs kill an elderly man doing yard work - raking rocks - and upon searching the scene and finding him unarmed, the SEALs rolled his body up in a rug and threw it over the wall around his property.
We were informed of this as a warning and told to be ready for the local retaliation. We knew this would have repercussions. Immediately following this we lost a Marine in 3rd Platoon who was shot in the head on what was supposed to be a normal patrol at the time. Direct and indirect fire [IDF] saw a surge, and the intel reporting on our WIA/KIA (Wounded in Action/Killed in Action) confirmed this.
The local sheiks immediately refused to meet with us and told us that more retaliations for the killing of an innocent were coming. All of our crucial relationships we had developed with the local Iraqi civilians in our area were destroyed - and given the enemy that we were fighting - developing relationships was a mission critical task.
We saw an immediate increase in IED’s (Improvised Explosive Devices) and had to change tactics, logistics, and all movements. We could no longer foot patrol our area while the SEALs were in our AO. It became too dangerous. We could only establish and monitor OP’s for ambush and IED setups.
Our translators continued to seek information from the locals and tried to get leadership to meet with us- they confirmed that this was a response/ retaliation to the killing of an innocent elderly man. All of our Company leadership compared intel and tried to put the pieces together for a solution.
We all knew of Task Unit Bruiser - with their signature Punisher skull patches - was causing mayhem in the area. They were gut-shooting women from their firing position of the hospital, killing unarmed Iraqis, and not cooperating with US Forces on the ground to deconflict the battlespace.
It was obvious that they were not only directed to act in the manner which they did, but were also protected by their leadership, because the combined leadership of 3-8 & other local units were reporting Bruiser’s wild and wanton acts of violence to their own chain of command, as they were resulting in Marines getting killed in retribution attacks. But our reports fell on deaf ears.
We lost 36 Marines. The vast majority of those losses were only in the middle months of deployment when Task Unit Bruiser was present.
Years later, after trying desperately to put all this behind me I was asked if I knew who any of those individuals were - I was shown a picture of them. Little did I know that this group that had created so much havoc had become famous. I pointed out their Lieutenant immediately as the one (that I had talked to in order to rectify this problem, and he would not cooperate) I had words with trying to get cooperation from them. That person was Leif Babin.
I had deployed previously in 2004 for to Haiti, and 2005 to Iraq, and worked with SEALs previously. They were outstanding. The unprofessionalism displayed and violations of ROEs I saw from Task Unit Bruiser was startling and extremely concerning especially given the deadly cost to US Forces.

Is this the greatest Special Forces Group in history?
Task Force 145 can only be described as a real life avengers team.
It was made up of operators from the world’s best special forces units. From the US it included members from Delta Force, Devgru, the 75th ranger regiment and the CIA’s ultra secretive SOG paramilitary unit.
From the UK it featured members from the SAS, SBS and paratroopers from the Special forces group.
But if that wasn’t enough they were supported by the 24th tactics squadron, known as the air force’s tier 1 special operations ground unit and the US’ Night Stalkers, an elite aviation unit who use the likes of MH-60 Blackhawks and specially modified MH-47 Chinooks to transport special forces units in the riskiest of missions
This dream team operated in Iraq up until at least 2007. Over the course of just 18 months they arrested 3,500 people (terrorists), killed hundreds more and brought al Qaeda bombings down from an average of 150 a month to just 2 saving almost 3000 lives monthly.
Sadly this wasn’t without cost. Delta force suffered a 20% casualty rate and 6 sas members lost their lives. In total the task force lost 18 in action but saved countless lives doing so.

The South African Police Union has revealed that over 70 % of SAPS's tactical unit and the special task force members in KwaZulu-Natal have left the force within a short space of time.

The SAPS Special Task Force (STF) ended in the top 10 SWAT teams at the annual five-day UAE SWAT Challenge last week.

Task Force 145 is one of the most secretive and deadly tier one special operations joint task forces ever created. Forged after the 2003 Iraq invasion, Task Force 145 was relied upon by the Joint Special Operations Command to execute fast-paced, high stakes missions in pursuit of a very important manhunt.
The units that made up Task Force 145 ranged from Delta Force, SEAL Team 6, Special Air Service, MI6, CIA Special Activities Center, and a whole slew of others. This joint U.S.-U.K Task Force underwent some of the most awe inspiring missions the world has ever seen. But why was Task Force 145 stood up? What was it specifically created to do? And just how capable was it?
This is the story of Task Force 145.
