Tara VanDerveer (born June 25, 1953) has been the Stanford University women's basketball coach since 1985. She led the Stanford Cardinal to two NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Championships: in 1990 and 1992. She stepped away from the Stanford program for a year to serve as the U.S. national team head coach at the 1996 Olympic Games. VanDerveer is the 1990 Naismith National Coach of the Year and a ten-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year. She is also one of only six NCAA Women's Basketball coaches to win over 900 games.
Early years
VanDerveer was born on June 26, 1953, to Dunbar and Rita VanDerveer, who named their first child "Tara" after the plantation in Gone with the Wind. She was born in Melrose, Massachusetts, a part of Greater Boston, but grew up in a small town in West Hill, near Schenectady, New York. Her parents were interested in a well-rounded education. Her father was studying for a doctorate at the school now known as the University at Albany. He took the family to Chautauqua in the summer, where she immersed in arts as well as sports. At the age of ten, her parents bought her a flute, and arranged for lessons. Two years later, one of the premier flutists in the world was staying in Chautauqua, and her father arranged for lessons with this distinguished teacher. Although she learned to play, she did not enjoy the experience, and gave up the flute in ninth grade. The love of music stayed with her though, and in later years she would take up the piano.
"They have been up and down, but they definitely showed what they are capable of. Teams get tired of getting beat. I knew when I watched them warm up that they were serious."
"We were exposed as not a very gritty team. We didn't go the defensive work we needed to do and that fueled their offense. This is going to be a challenge for our team and I hope it's a valuable lesson because we are going to see more of this."
"She wants to win more than anything, so she'll do what it takes. A lot of people want to win, but they won't do what it takes. When your best players are your hardest workers, you have the chance to be very good."
"It seems like the strengths of a lot of these teams are really similar. Everybody's got excellent post players."
"I think the trend in this bracket is big-scoring posts. It seems to be the thing to have. I'm glad we have two of them (juniors Brooke Smith and Kristen Newlin)."
"It is disappointing to get this close and to see the ball go in the basket and then have it taken away from you. I just think that's a really tough way to lose a game. It really surprised me that that would be called then. ... It seems at that point it would be a no-call."
"We need her to keep playing like that if we are going to go far in this tournament."
"I'm happy we were successful and I felt like we got great contributions from different people. We rebounded well and we played good defense, but we need to do a better job offensively."
"There were some times that I wondered what we were doing and who this team was in the Stanford uniform. We are used to depending on our offensive execution. Tomorrow, we will go back to the drawing board."
"I saw some really uncharacteristic things, too, and I'm glad we got those out of our system. I think we can do a better job offensively."
