This Virginia Island Is Literally Sinking Into The Sea
“When you see fish swimming on your road, you’ve got major problems,” Dave Schulte, a marine biologist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, told VICE News correspondent Arielle Duhaime-Ross. “That’s for sure.”
Welcome to Tangier Island, on the Virginia side of the Chesapeake Bay, where 500 residents are struggling to cope with rising waters that are claiming more of their land each year.
“I refuse to become a climate change refugee,” Tangier Island Mayor James “Ooker” Eskridge said. Yet that’s exactly what community residents will be facing later this century without intervention, Schulte projected.
Since 1850, the island has lost two-thirds of its land mass. Many residents believe building a $30 million sea wall is Tangier’s only hope of saving what remains of the island, but Congres...

Tangier Island: Among the First U.S. Climate Refugees?
The small island of Tangier sits 12 miles off the coast of Virginia. It’s a peaceful, salt-of-the-earth kind of place, with only 600 full-time residents, most of whom have known their neighbors—commercial crabbers, watermen, schoolteachers, parishioners—for generations. Shortly, however, that may all come to an end.
As soon as 25 years from now, Tangier is expected to disappear into the sea. The people who live there, along with the residents of similar coastal towns and islands threatened by sea-level rise, may become among the first U.S. climate refugees.

Tangier Island Visit
We took a day trip on our boat from Carter's Creek off of the York River, Gloucester Virginia and went to Tangier Island and back again on August 25th, 2018.
We had a great time just being out on the water and visiting such a historic and special place. It was the perfect weather day. Seas were calm with 1 foot waves and the skies were clear. Our 21 foot Well Craft center console had no problem handling the trip which was by far the furthest we had ever gone in the boat.
We climbed the inside, western part of the Chesapeake Bay going past the New Point Comfort Light House, Mathews, Gwynn Island, Deltaville, Westland and Kilmarnock. We then headed east towards Tangier as we approached Reedville.
Our Tangier island visit consisted of docking at James Parks marina, walking down main ...

Since 1850, the island has lost two-thirds of its land mass. Many residents believe building a $30 million sea wall is Tangier’s only hope of saving what remains of the island, but Congress hasn’t approved funding for the wall.
“If we don’t get a sea wall, this is what you’ll find on Tangier in a few years: remnants of homes,” Tangier Island resident Carol Pruitt-Moore said.
Schulte warns that Tangier isn’t an isolated case but rather a sign of things to come. “As climate change is impacting us, we’re going to be making these decisions over and over again all over the country,” he said. “Who are we going to move? What are we going to do?”

Our Tangier island visit consisted of docking at James Parks marina, walking down main street and eating a hot dog and ice cream at Spanky's Place. There were many golf carts moving a lot of tourists from the two ferry's down the road. Most of the buildings were very old and it actually did look and feel like we stepped back in time. What got me most was that the bay was never far away. It could be seen from between any of the houses that we walked past. The island is only 1 mile wide from what I understand. It felt as if we were walking on a very small, developed island.
We stayed about an hour and a half and started heading back. We left Tangier heading northeast sailing down the channel which was lined with crab shanties. We then swung around the island in a clockwise direction and headed back towards the western part of the bay to pick up the same route that we took going to Tangier.
All in all a great day of adventure with my first mate! We'll do it again sometime soon I'm sure. I hope you enjoy the video!
