The Tamangརྟ་དམག་ (Devnagari: तामाङ; tāmāng), or Tamag, are the indigenous inhabitants of the Himalayan regions of Nepal and India, their ancestral land is called Tamsaling. They are the aborigines of Yambu, or Kathmandu Valley, who had self-rule and autonomous roughly 2 centuries before present, systematically displaced during the expansion period of Gorkha Kingdom and this continues to the present day, the Central Development Region, Nepal remains where 70% of the population reside. The traditionally Buddhist Tamang are the largest Tibeto-Burman ethnic group within Nepal, constituting 5% of the national population of over 1.3 million in 2001, increasing to 1,539,830 as of 2011 census, yet contested. Tamang are also a significant minority in Sikkim and Darjeeling District of West Bengal of India as permanent settlers doing labor work; their languages are fifth most spoken in Nepal (note all Tamang languages are not mutually intelligible). They were one of the aborigines who were least affected by the process of Nepalization or Khas-ization. They were considered low caste automatically in the dominant Hindu state and system, and thus, there is exploitation, marginalization, and oppression of Tamang people. Peculiar to Tamang people are complex marriage restrictions within the community.

TAMANG - Folk Songs & Dances
Tamangs are indigenous inhabitants of the Himalayan regions of Nepal and India. Their ancestral home is Tamsaling. However, their origin is believed to be in Yambu (Kathmandu). Buddhist Tamangs are the largest Tibeto-Burman ethnic group in Nepal, Sikkim and Darjeeling. Tamangs have their own language that falls within the Tibeto-Burman language group. Their script is Tamyig. Tamangs have many unique features. They still practice an early form of Paganism where Bonbo or Shamans and Lamas or Buddhist monks perform the rituals together. The main festival is Lhosar (New Year). A memorable entity recognized and shared by Tamangs is their ancient musical instrument Damphu which is a key component of their culture and tradition. No ceremony, whether of joy and sorrow, is complete without Damphu. Along with the original rhythm of Tamang Selo (folk songs), Damphu dance, Mendhomaya dance, Doora dance, and Bakpa dance have influenced Nepalese culture.

The Tamang Heritage Trail circuit is a relatively low-elevation trek (max 3100m) and can be completed in 3 to 6 days depending on your pace. You can start and end this circuit in Syabrubesi, or you can add it onto the Langtang Valley Trek and/or the Gosaikunda Trek. I continued on to the Gosaikunda Trek after completing the Tamang Heritage Trail trek - you can check out the video of my journey here: https://youtu.be/CgNBZqOW4TU.
As with all the diverse places and peoples of Nepal, it is fascinating to traverse through these amazing landscapes, meet these inspiring, resilient communities, and learn about their unique culture, often so very different from our own. These Tamang communities have unfortunately been largely marginalized in Nepal over the last few centuries, and also suffered great devastation in the 2015 earthquake. With fewer income earning opportunities in this remote place, trekking along the Tamang Heritage Trail provides much needed support to the local people here, and helps to sustain their livelihoods and preserve their traditional culture.
So consider this off the beaten trek, and discover the Tamang culture and awe-inspiring landscapes of Nepal’s beautiful Rasuwa district!
