Actors tend not to retire and T.P. McKenna was no exception continuing gue star in a host of high profile appearances. Here was seen him opposite Pauline Collins in The Ambassador, Leo McKern in Rumpole of the Bailey and as John Thaw as Inspector Morse's last ever suspect.

STARRING - T.P. McKENNA: With over a hundred stage parts to his credit, few played the role of the flamboyant thespian to better effect. Capturing all the vanity and the insecurity of such theatre folk in a single grasp, McKenna was often recognised as the actor's actor and his casting as Ainsley Rupert McReadie provides an authenticity as convincing as the film's radio studio setting. This is where morse starts feeling ill and after his conversation with TP. McKenna character Sir Lionel, he had a heart attack and is taken to the hospital and later dies!

STARRING - T.P. McKENNA: With over a hundred stage parts to his credit, few played the role of the flamboyant thespian to better effect. Capturing all the vanity and the insecurity of such theatre folk in a single grasp, McKenna was often recognised as the actor's actor and his casting as Ainsley Rupert McReadie provides an authenticity as convincing as the film's radio studio setting. It is a bravura performance in which the actor effortlessly becomes 'the disturbing gentleman of the wireless'.
DIRECTOR - KIERAN HICKEY: Filmed across a week before the Christmas of 1977 on the smallest of budgets, director Kieran Hickey deftly conjures up the wireless era with neatly applied art deco signatures and encompassed in the sinister hum of Valentine Dyall's narration, once himself a chilling voice of the radiogram.
Hickey's formal interest in filmmaking began on a course in Film Studies at the Regent Street Polytechnic which is where he became god friends with the future critic and film writer, David Thomson.
Hickey returned to his native Ireland and founded a small production company under the title of B.A.C Films (from the gaelic for Dublin, Baile รtha Cliath) with camera man, Sean Corcoran, and editor, Patrick Duffner, subsisting on the likes of industrial travel films for the Irish tourist board.
His long terms objective was to make independent dramatic features and A Child's Voice was his first venture in that direction.
REVIEW - BOSTON PHOENIX, 1979: "In 'A Child's Voice', Kieran Hickey creates a thick, claustrophobic atmosphere, redolent of the supernatural. Using an excellent, richly literate script by David Thomson, the film tells the story-within-a-story of one Ainsley Rupert McReadie . The craggy-looking McReadie (T.P. McKenna) is a proud man, 'in love with himself, ' who lives alone, sipping sherry and munching biscuits in his gloomy, cluttered bachelor's quarters. His sole contact wit the world is through the radio, over which he reads the suspense stories he write by candlelight.
Three times a week, he sits in a tiny studio, creating a world of late-night terror for his devoted listeners. Everything is cosy until McReadie begins the story of the magician Orsino (a bow to Mr. Welles) and the child he wishes to make vanish in a box trick. The boy is unwilling to enter the box, but, convinced of his omnipotence, the magician refuses to heed his pleas and warnings. After reading the first instalment of his tale, McReadie begins to receive mysterious phone calls in the dead of night. A boy's eerie voice tells him, 'I'd prefer you would not continue with the story'.
The outcome of these two intertwining tales - the one McReadie's reading and the one he's living - is as chilling and mysterious as the stories of LeFanu and Arthur Machen. 'A Child's Voice' is all atmosphere and spectral vocal effects. (The film's narrator, Valentine Dyall, was himself a renowned radio horror star; he pronounces every word with delicious deliberation.) The gloomy night-town streets, the sombre studio and draughty rooms belong to the shadowy, stylised word of the 'film noir' and to the ghostlier moments in 'Citizen Kane'.
