Intelligent machines are remaking our world. The speed of their improvement is accelerating fast and every day there are more things they can do better than us. There are risks, but the opportunities for human society are enormous.
Three engineers at the forefront of that revolution come to London to join Caroline Steel and a public audience at the Great Hall of Imperial College.
Regina Barzilay from MIT created a major breakthrough in detecting early stage breast cancer. She also led the team that used machine learning to discover Halicin, the first new antibiotic in 30 years.
David Silver is Principal Research Scientist at Google DeepMind. He led the AlphaGo team that built the AI to defeat the world’s best human player of Go.
Paolo Pirjanian founded Embodied, and is a pioneer in developing emotionally intelligent robots to aid child development.

Life and Death in Gaza, a new film from the World Service’s #BBCEye investigations team for BBC Storyville, is made by four Palestinians living through extraordinary times. Filmed from the first days of the war, Khalid, Aya, Adam, and Aseel document their own lives as they endure bombing raids, multiple evacuations, family separations and reunions, deaths, and even the birth of a new life amidst the chaos.

Self-shot over the course of a year, the film captures the fight for survival through direct, personal experiences. Interwoven with these are observational scenes filmed by other filmmakers on the ground, as well as personal archives from before the war. Together, they tell a uniquely human story about the first year of the war in Gaza, challenging assumptions about the conflict and those caught in it. The film showcases stories of resilience, loss, and hope amid a deep and desperate humanitarian crisis.
This film forms part of a group of programmes marking the 7 October anniversary and the Israel-Gaza war. Other programming includes the BBC Storyville documentary, Surviving October 7th: We Will Dance Again, available on BBC iPlayer.

US Election 2024: Abortion is key issue in swing states | BBC News
The right to abortion is a key issue for many women in the US Presidential election, according to opinion polls. They suggest that the issue could have a big impact in the swing states where the election will be won and lost.
Republican leaders have supported tough restrictions or an outright ban on abortion and that has been proving a liability for Donald Trump, who has been changing his public position on the issue.
Meanwhile Kamala Harris is highlighting her support of abortion rights as she seeks the votes of pro-choice women.
Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Sarah Smith in Washington.

Israeli strikes kill more than 70 in northern Gaza, local officials say | BBC News
Israeli strikes have killed at least 73 people, including women and children, in the city of Beit Lahia in northern Gaza, the strip's Hamas-run authorities have said.
Dozens of others are injured and many are still trapped under the rubble after the bombing late on Saturday night, officials added.
Israel said it was checking reports of casualties but said the figures published by Hamas authorities were "exaggerated" and did not match information held by its military.
Fighting also continues to be reported in southern Lebanon as well as the south of Beirut on Sunday morning, where smoke was seen rising above the city.
Israel said its air force had attacked "about 175 terrorist targets" in Gaza and Lebanon over the past day.

The allegation comes a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he believed 10,000 North Korean soldiers could join the war, based on intelligence information.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol called for a security meeting on Friday and said the international community must respond with "all available means".

Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, has been killed by Israeli soldiers in southern Gaza, Israel has confirmed. Video footage released by Israel show his body in the house where he was killed.
Sinwar had led the armed group in Gaza since 2017 and was described by Israel and the US as the mastermind behind the 7 October attacks, when Hamas gunmen killed around 1,200 people in Israel and took 251 hostages.
Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's prime minister, said: "Today, as we promised to do, we settled the score with him."
The Israeli military said Sinwar was among three militants killed on Wednesday during a raid on a building in Rafah suspected of being used by senior Hamas members.
Israel said Sinwar had been spotted by chance in the city of Rafah by amilitary patrol, along with three other suspects and he was seen entering a building. It’s said a drone then tracked him in the building and the Hamas leader was then killed.
Confirmation of his death was delayed for several hours, as Israel compared dental records and fingerprints.
Sophie Raworth presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Jeremy Bowen, Frank Gardner and Sarah Smith.

Wagner Group still recruiting despite Russia mutiny - BBC News
The Wagner Group is still recruiting fighters across Russia, days after staging a mutiny that led Vladimir Putin to raise fears of civil war, the BBC has found.
BBC News journalists called more than a dozen Russian recruitment centres and was told it's business as usual.
From Kaliningrad in the west to Krasnodar in the south, no-one believed the group was being disbanded.
Last week, mercenary troops led by Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin took over the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, marched on Moscow and shot down Russian military helicopters and a plane on their way.
Their mutiny was later aborted after a deal was struck.

US Supreme Court strikes down President Biden student loan forgiveness plan - BBC News
The US Supreme Court has struck down US President Joe Biden's proposal to wipe out billions in student debt.
The 6-3 ruling effectively cancels the plan, which would have forgiven about $10,000 (£7,800) per borrower - and up to $20,000 in some cases.
But the plan has been in limbo since some conservative states sued, arguing the president overstepped his authority. The Supreme Court agreed.
The decision affects the loans of more than 40 million Americans.

Wagner forces halt advance on Moscow after calls for rebellion – BBC News
Wagner mercenaries have halted their advance on Moscow, after claiming to get within 200km of the Russian capital.

But, after President Putin’s televised statement, in which he described the day’s events as “a knife in the back of our people”, it is unclear what the future holds for Prigozhin and Wagner, who have been a key part of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
