Surgical Sutures (Stitches) & Needles | Absorbable & Non-Absorbable | Prolene | Vicryl, Silk, Catgut
SURGICAL SUTURE:
It is the thread used to hold tissue edges together after an injury or surgery.
There are various ways in which surgical sutures can be classified. The most common classification puts it into two categories; absorbable and non-absorbable sutures.
ABSORBABLE SUTURES:
These sutures are degraded by enzymes in the body. Examples are, Vicryl, Monocryl, Gut/Catgut, PDS (Polydioxanone Suture), etc.
NON-ABSORBABLE SUTURES:
These sutures are not degraded by enzymes in the body. Example are, Prolene, Nylon, Silk, Steel, etc.
Sutures can also be classified as Monofilament and Polyfilament Sutures.
MONOFILAMENT SUTURES:
Advantage is low tissue reaction. Disadvantage is poor knot quality, that is, knot is likely to untie. It is also called poor knot security. Example is Prolene.

POLYFILAMEN / MULTIFILAMENT / BRAIDED SUTURES:
Advantage is good knot quality. Knot is less likely to untie and has good knot security. Disadvantage is that it is more prone to infection as bacteria can grow between the filaments of the sutures. These sutures are also called "Braided Sutures". Example is Vicryl.
Sutures can also be classified as Natural and Synthetic Sutures.
NATURAL SUTURES:
These cause more tissue reaction. Examples include Silk, Catgut, etc.
SYNTHETIC SUTURES:
These cause less tissue reaction. Examples include Prolene, Vicryl, etc.
Prolene Suture is also called Polypropylene Suture. The thread is of Blue color.
Vicryl Suture is also called Polyglactin Suture. The thread is of Purple color.
Needles can be Straight or Curved and Cutting or Rounded Tip.

In the emergency department vertical mattress sutures are used for simple closure of wounds, including contaminated wounds following trauma. They are particularly useful when the wound requires more tension to bring together the skin edges, or for thin skin where this technique helps evert the skin edge effectively. In the operating theatre they may also be used for hand sewn bowel anastomoses.
