Suroosh Alvi (born 26 March 1969) is a Pakistani Canadian journalist and filmmaker. He is the co-founder of VICE magazine, a youth media brand operating in 34 countries. Alvi is a travelled journalist and an executive producer of film, covering global youth culture, news, and music. He has hosted and produced award-winning documentaries investigating controversial issues, movements, and subcultures, including conflict minerals in Congo, the Iraq war, and the rise of the Taliban of Pakistan.
The surname Alavi (often spelled as Alvi and can be also seen spelled as Alaoui or Alawi) (Arabic:علوي) signifies ancestry from Ali ibn Abi Talib (Arabic:علي بن أﺑﻲ طالب), the fourth Caliph of SunniIslam. Ali was the cousin and son-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and titled Amir al-Mu'minin (Arabic:أمیر المؤمنین) (Commander of the Faithful) by his followers.
Alavi family
The Alvi, is a South Asian community that claims to trace its origins from Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib through his son Al-Abbas ibn Ali, who was the Commander at the Battle of Karbala. It is also believed to have gone through Awn Qutab Shah, the famous general of Mahmud Ghazni who conquered most part of Herat, Afghanistan, and Khorasan. Contrary to this a small number of scholars have argued that Awans were a part of the local Hindu population of the Punjab region of Medieval India, who embraced Islam after the Islamic invasion of India.
Alviž previously played for Khazar Lankaran in Azerbaijan Premier League and Anagennisi Dherynia in Cyprus First Division. In the season 2008/2009 Flamurtari finished sixth in Albanian Superliga and won the Albanian Cup. Roberto Alviž played an important role for Flamurtari in this season, so Flamurtari offered him another 1-year contract, which he signed in the first days of June 2009.
Alviž left Flamurtari before Christmas 2009 and signed a contract for amateur club SC KNAUF Liezen in the Austrian Landesliga.
On 25 November 2013, Alviž went on a two-week trial with S.League side Brunei DPMM. Following the completion of the trial Brunei DPMM announced they would be signing Alviž along with Joe Gamble and Boris Raspudić.

Crime & Punishment in the Gaza Strip with Suroosh Alvi
We finally got a rare glimpse of the embattled Gaza Strip and a chance to see what life was like under the rule of Hamas. In 2007 we tried and failed to get into Gaza through the Israeli-controlled Erez Crossing. Back then the rival Palestinian factions of Hamas and Fatah were engaged in a bloody war for control of this tiny strip of land. Hamas won. When the post-Mubarak government of Egypt decided to start letting small numbers of folks into Gaza through their Rafah Crossing, we knew we could finally enter the region.

Why are Canadians Joining the Islamic State? - Homegrown Radicals with Suroosh Alvi
Canadian authorities have reported that at least 130 citizens are involved extremist activities abroad, with 30 in Syria alone. In Calgary, five youths who attended the 8th & 8th Musallah mosque are known to have joined the Islamic State, leading the Canadian media to emphatically label Calgary a hotbed of terrorism.
In response to two so-called "lone wolf" attacks last year, Canada’s Conservative government introduced controversial anti-terrorism legislation, which some fear will only further marginalizethe country’s Muslim population. VICE founder Suroosh Alvi traveled to Calgary to investigate allegations of radicalization among the city’s Muslim youth, speaking with the imam of the 8th & 8th Musallah, as well as the mother of Damian Clairmont, who died in Syria fighting for the Islami...

VICE founder Suroosh Alvi traveled to Calgary to investigate allegations of radicalization among the city’s Muslim youth, speaking with the imam of the 8th & 8th Musallah, as well as the mother of Damian Clairmont, who died in Syria fighting for the Islamic State.

Just days before all hell broke loose, VICE founder Suroosh Alvi travelled the country, meeting people from all walks of life: from hipsters to hostage takers, and from top lawmakers to one of Iran's heaviest metal bands.

At VICE, we take the comment section very seriously. In this episode of “VICE Replies” VICE founder Suroosh Alvi replies to comments on the classic “Gun Markets of Pakistan” video that helped make VICE a premier video powerhouse.
Suroosh discusses the risks of the company’s foray into the video realm, how the company redefined journalism, what happened to the “old VICE,” and how he’s been trolled on the Internet for years.

Sure, we hear about violence in Pakistan all the time, but in 2011, more than three times as many people were killed in Karachi than the number of people killed in American drone strikes in the tribal areas. VICE explores the seedy underbelly of this ultra-violent metropolis of more than eighteen million people, and meet the players who make Karachi one of the craziest cities on earth.
