Rawest Forest - Super Mario RPG Animated Music Video
"Mario RPG: Rawest Forest"
Originally submitted to Newgrounds on June 8th, 2007
This was a music video created as the final project for my animation class in my final year of High School. It was created in a week using only a mouse and a ridiculous amount of hours clocked into playing Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars on the SNES. It was previously uploaded by several other YouTube users without permission, but in the process, the video spread and become something of a meme on sites like Nico Nico Douga, where many tributes and alternate interpretations were made. The song is a remix of a remix - the song of course is "Beware the Forest Mushrooms" by Yoko Shimomura while lyrics originate from "Geno's Forest || ROBOvoice" by Newgrounds user DJ XBrav in 2004. Super Mario RPG was one of the last major releases for the SNES in North America, and it was an incredible display of what the system was capable of near the end of its commercial life. Prerendered graphics being used for in-game sprites and backdrops wasn't a new thing on consoles - Donkey Kong Country did it a couple of years earlier - but SMRPG elevated them to the next level. The clean lines and bright colors of the Mario games were a perfect match for the limited technology, and the forced isometric perspective gave the visuals a surprising sense of depth.
Square, who developed the game, really blurred the lines between the 16 and 32-bit generations with their work here, even more so than Rare had with DKC and Killer Instinct. Their influence can be felt throughout the entire game - the writing (and the translation) are stellar throughout and could carry the game, even without all of the fancy trappings. The bizarre storyline and its sense of humor are huge draws - the game has some real LOL moments alongside the more serious plot points. Mario and company were fleshed out in ways that we had never seen before, and the characterizations felt completely on-target with what my imagination has always painted beforehand. Mario is a peacemaking do-gooder, Peach is headstrong and independent instead of being the passive damsel-in-distress, and Bowser is hilariously insecure and proud. The new Mallow and Geno personas fit in nicely alongside the classic series mainstays, and the cast of bad guys is totally off the wall but endearing. It's hard to pick a favorite character, good or bad, because they're all well written and have tons of personality. There's even some subtly adult humor buried here for effect - I'll never forget the first time I saw Valentina (a bird/woman) animated like a DOA character.
The gameplay is pretty fantastic here, too. The game is very much a JRPG with lots of dungeon exploring, extended dialogue sequences, and turn-based combat, but a lot of clever touches help it rise above most others of the time. There are some good minigames spread throughout (like the barrel-riding on a river and the mode 7 mine-cart ride), and the battle-system was among the first to introduce timed button presses. Right before you hit an enemy, if you tap the button at the right time you'll do extra damage. You can minimize damage the same way when you are being attacked, and sometimes you'll even trigger secondary effects with spells. It adds a lot of variety and some action to the mix, helping it to stay pretty engaging over its short duration.
There is also a fair number of sidequests that you can take on that will provide some great rewards if you see them through, and a few hidden superbosses await those that want more challenge. SMRPG is a pretty easy game, but the optional Culex boss is there for anyone that wants a bit more challenge.
Finally, no discussion of SMRPG would be complete without a shoutout to Yoko Shimomura - the music is beyond amazing here, and is easily one of my favorite soundtracks ever. It mixes Final Fantasy-style orchestration with electronic elements to fantastic effect, and the music is far more complex than you'd typically hear on 90s console games. Of course great things were expected from someone as talented and prolific as Shimomura, but she really outdid herself here. The soundtrack makes the game, and the standout tracks are some of the most legendary tracks on the SNES - can anyone deny the genius of the forest theme or the ending medley?
I got this for Christmas the year it came out (I was still a few months away from getting a PlayStation) and my mind was thoroughly blown. It combines all of the hallmarks of a classic RPG by Square with all of the charm and charisma of the best Mario titles, producing something wholly wonderful and unique from the pieces. I actually still prefer this over any of the later RPG Mario games - they are good, but few of them carried the magic as capably as Square and Nintendo's original collaborative effort. It's an amazing game, through and through.

Martin Hagwell, also known as "Marta" created the remix used in this music video in particular. Here it is in HD for you all to enjoy!

Curious about New Game Plus and the removal of previous Completionist episodes? The answers are in my update video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onlCuZEn9e4
Whenever a company other than Nintendo makes a Mario game, it is really hit or miss. Like Mario's Time Machine (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGutMT4DPIw), I still have nightmares about that. But when Square took the reins to make Super Mario RPG, man oh man does it come together. It still plays well and has elements of modern RPG games. Plus we get two characters introduced in this game that NEVER appear anywhere else, and fans have been rooting for these characters to appear in Smash, they are Mallow and Geno. Two companions that help you on your quest to restore balance to the world. Also called Mario and the Legend of the Seven Stars, I'm really excited to dive back into this game and play me some Mario Final Fantasy.
Let me know what you thought about my Super Mario RPG review! Also let me know what other games I should re-complete for New Game Plus!
