Sukhumi or Sokhumi (Georgian:სოხუმი, [sɔxumi]; Abkhaz:Аҟәа, Aqwa; Russian:Сухум(и), Sukhum(i)) is a city in northwestern Georgia and the capital of Abkhazia. a disputed region on the Black Sea coast. The city suffered significant damage during the Georgian–Abkhazian conflict in the early 1990s. The present-day population of 60,000 is only half the one at the end of the USSR era.
Naming
In Georgian, the city is known as სოხუმი (Sokhumi) or აყუ (Aqu), in Megrelian as აყუჯიხა (Aqujikha), and in Russian as Сухум (Sukhum) or Сухуми (Sukhumi). The toponym Sokhumi derives from the Georgian word Tskhomi/Tskhumi, meaning beech. It is significant, that "dia" in several dialects of the Georgian language and among them in Megrelian means mother and "skuri" means water. In Abkhaz, the city is known as Аҟәа (Aqwa) which according to native tradition signifies water.
In the ancient Greek sources (Pseudo-Skilak of Kariand- IV c. B. C. ) the city is referred to as Dioscurias. According to the antique traditions this name originates from the mythical Dioskouri, the twin brothers Castor and Pollux, sons of Zeus. It was believed that the town had been established by Castor's and Pollux's coachmen, the Argonauts Telkius and Amphyst. However the names of the town may simply be the Greek comprehension of the old Georgian word combination.
Sukhumi district is a district of Abkhazia, Georgia’s breakaway republic. It corresponds to the eponymous Georgian municipality. Its capital is Sukhumi, the town by the same name, which is also the capital of entire Abkhazia. The population of the district is 11,531 according to the 2011 census. The city of Sukhumi is a separate administrative entity with more than 40,000 inhabitants.
Demographics
According to the 2011 Census, Sukhumi District had a population of 11,531:
On 2 April 2003, President Ardzinba dismissed Lev Avidzba and appointed State Security Service Chairman Zurab Agumava as acting District Head. Agumava remained in this post until in 2006 he was appointed Military Prosecutor by Ardzinba's successor Sergei Bagapsh.

27 September 1993 | Liberation of Sukhum from Georgian State Council troops
On 27 September 1993, the Abkhaz army liberated the capital, Sukhum, at the cost of huge losses. The operation to liberate Sukhum from Georgian State Council troops lasted 11 days. It was headed by then Defense Minister Major-General Sultan Sosnaliyev and the Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of Abkhazia, Major-General Sergei Dbar.

Father thanks for playin' with my friends and me I'm glad they got to meet the man I know You always knew the words and taught me honesty Picked me up when I was feeling low If I could talk to you one more time I know you'd work things out just like before Where did I go wrong can you hear me sing this song? Father I won't see you anymore Mother dry your eyes why do you cry those tears? You knew someday your baby'd be a man Letting go is hard when it's for ever dear I know it's late, but now I understand If I could hold your hand one more time And hear your lullabies just like before I know that I did wrong, so I'm singing you this song Mother, I won't see you anymore Son, I wish you knew how much we're missin' you I saw them cry their tears from up above I try to tell them, but the words aren't getting through I didn't mean to hurt the ones I love Mother, Father, I hope to see you soon And things will be just like they were before I'm sending all my love, I'm watching from above
