Cebuano, referred by most of its speakers as Bisaya or Binisaya (English: Visayan), is an Austronesian language spoken in the Philippines by about 20 million people, mostly in Central Visayas, most of whom belong to the Bisaya ethnic group. It is the most widely spoken of the languages within the so-named Bisayan subgroup and is closely related to other Filipino languages.
It has the largest native language-speaking population of the Philippines despite not being taught formally in schools and universities. It is the lingua franca of the Central Visayas, Negros Oriental, some parts of Eastern Visayas region and most parts of Mindanao. The name Cebuano is derived from the island of Cebu, which is the urheimat or origin of the language. Cebuano is the prime language in Western Leyte, noticeably in Ormoc and other municipalities surrounding the city, though most of the residents in the area name the Cebuano language by their own demonyms such as "Ormocanon" in Ormoc and "Albuerahanon" in Albuera. Cebuano is given the ISO 639-2 three letter code ceb, but has no ISO 639-1 two-letter code.

In the day-to-day conversation of Cebuano, we borrow a lot of words from Spanish and some English terms are used as well.
TO EVERYONE: Sorry in Bisaya is "Pasayloa". Sorry could also be "pasensya" which means "be patient with me". In Cebu, it is very common for us to combine English and Cebuano words. It is also very easy for us to switch between these 2 languages. You don't necessarily use "Pasayloa ko" in every situation. When bumping into somebody (friends or strangers) you can just say "sorry (sori) or sorry kaayo". The "pasayloa ko" is commonly used when committing a serious mistake though using the English term doesn't make your apology less. The trick is to be sincere when asking for an apology. It is based on Tagalog but incorporates elements from various Philippine languages, as well as foreign languages such as Spanish, English, and Chinese, reflecting the archipelago's diverse linguistic and cultural heritage. Filipino is used in government, education, and media, promoting national identity and unity among the Filipino people. As a language, it continues to evolve, adapting to modern influences while maintaining its roots in indigenous traditions.
Cebuano, also known as Bisaya, is an Austronesian language spoken in the southern Philippines, primarily in the Visayas and parts of Mindanao. It is one of the most widely spoken languages in the country, with over 20 million native speakers. Cebuano is named after the island of Cebu, but it is spoken in many other regions such as Bohol, Negros Oriental, and parts of Leyte. The language is closely related to other Philippine languages like Hiligaynon and Waray-Waray, and it has absorbed influences from Spanish due to centuries of colonization, as well as English in more recent times. It uses the Latin alphabet and has a rich oral and written tradition.
This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes. It aims to provide valuable insights and knowledge to viewers, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of different languages and their unique characteristics. By raising awareness about linguistic diversity, the video seeks to foster a greater respect and recognition for various languages, particularly those that are endangered or underrepresented. Let us formally-introduce to you this widely-spoken language in the country of Philippines, the Cebuano Language.
In this video, you will learn a general overview of this language's history, the alphabet "ABAKADA" and how it's pronounced, where this language being spoken and the varieties of speakers it has.
*NOTE:
Although it's widely referred to as "Bisaya", the correct linguistic term should only be (Sinugbuanon) Cebuano as Bisaya/Visaya refers to a group of many Bisaya languages/dialects. The "Bisaya" term just got popular for the reason that it's mostly known to be spoken in the Visayas part of the country so the "Bisaya" term is now being more used to refer to the people speaking it and to the language itself. If you visit/live in the Philippines, you might rarely hear people using "Cebuano" to refer to the language.
This episode marks the start of our Cebuano Language series where we will discuss the Cebuano or Sinugbuanong Binisaya language itself, one episode at a time.
Hope you enjoy and let us know your thoughts in the comment section below! ♥

Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together.
Filipino is the national language of the Philippines and serves as a standardized form of Tagalog, one of the country's major languages.
Additionally, it contributes to the preservation of languages by documenting and sharing linguistic knowledge, thus ensuring that these languages and their cultural heritage are not lost to future generations.
