Although human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and Y chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) haplogroups and subclades are named in a similar manner, their names belong to completely separate systems.
Y-DNA haplogroups are defined by the presence of a series of SNP markers on the Y chromosome. Subclades are defined by a terminal SNP, the SNP furthest down in the Y chromosome phylogenetic tree. The Y Chromosome Consortium (YCC) developed a system of naming major human Y-DNA haplogroups with the capital letters A through T, with further subclades named using numbers and lower case letters (YCC longhand nomenclature). YCC shorthand nomenclature names Y-DNA haplogroups and their subclades with the first letter of the major Y-DNA haplogroup followed by a dash and the name of the defining terminal SNP. Y-DNA haplogroup nomenclature is changing over time to accommodate the increasing number of SNPs being discovered and tested, and the resulting expansion of the Y chromosome phylogenetic tree. This change in nomenclature has resulted in inconsistent nomenclature being used in different sources. This inconsistency, and increasingly cumbersome longhand nomenclature, has prompted a move towards using the simpler shorthand nomenclature.

mtDNA Haplogroups
mtDNA haplogroup names can be long or short, depending on your mtDNA profile. But there is a correlation between the name you see and the history of your direct maternal line. Think of each letter or number like a common ancestor you share with others a very very very long time ago. In my example, you are related to someone in haplogroup K2a3b4 at ancestor "K" and to someone in haplogroup K1b1a2c at ancestor "K1b1."

Origin and Subclades of Y-DNA Haplogroup J2-M172
Haplogroup J was created in Western Asia 42900 years ago, and its direct descendants J1 and J2 are estimated to have formed in the vicinity of J 31600 years ago. The J2 is also referred to as the J-M172. The age of haplogroup J is at the midpoint of the ages of representative Y-DNA haplogroups. In the last episode, I introduced the current distribution and celebrities of the half group J1, phylogenetic trees, and the ancient Y-DNA with J1. In this video, I will introduce J2.

Which Y-chromosome haplogroup is most commonly found among Spaniards?
The most common Y-chromosome haplogroup among Spaniards is A) R1b. This haplogroup, especially the R1b-M269 subclade, is widespread in Western Europe and reaches particularly high frequencies in the Iberian Peninsula. Its presence in Spain reflects ancient migrations, including the spread of Indo-European groups and migrations from the Iberian Peninsula after the Last Glacial Maximum. R1b is thought to have been further distributed through historical events, such as the Bronze Age and early Neolithic migrations, which established a lasting genetic influence among Spanish populations.
