In 2002, Australia's most massive tree, nicknamed El Grande, was discovered. It died in an autumn burn in 2003.
The valley has been the site of an ongoing conflict between environmentalists, who have proposed the protection of the site as a national park, and supporters of the logging industry. One of the environmentalists' arguments, as well as the environmental benefits, was that a tourism-based economy would be more beneficial for the local economy than logging the area.

A visit to the Styx Tall Trees Conservation Area is not complete without seeing the towering Eucalyptus regnans, also known as giant ash, which gives the reserve its name. It's not just their height, with numerous species measuring over 90 metres, but the girth of these remarkable trees which render them among the largest and tallest eucalypts on the planet. They played a significant role in Tasmania's controversial environmental history and after a bitter campaign was added to the forest reserve system in 2013.

Trees Of The Styx Valley
The Styx valley has on display some of the most accessible old growth forest in Tasmania a short drive from Hobart. The area was the scene of a bitter campaign by environmental groups to protect the big trees and resulted in some of the area being added to the forest reserve system in 2013 as the Styx Tall Trees Conservation Area.
Much of the land in the area is however still forestry land with little to no protection.

SILENT HIKING Styx River Walk, Tasmania 29/01/2023
On the way back from completing the Tolkien Track we also did two short, relatively easy tracks. The previous video showed the first we completed, and then we did this walk as it was just across the road. Walking down to the river was so nice, especially as it was nearing 1pm and the sun had come out, so it was nice to relax by the water which was crystal clear. Absolutely stunning. Definitely worth checking this walk out if you are in the area. As I mentioned in the previous video, there is a carparking area nearby as well as a toilet facility for this walk. Until the next video. Wildrose.
