Black Granddaughter of Segregationist Strom Thurmond Praises SC for Removing Confederate Flag
http://democracynow.org - The Confederate battle flag that has flown on the South Carolina state House grounds for more than 50 years comes down today. Governor Nikki Haley signed a bill Thursday to permanently remove the flag, after the House and Senate overwhelmingly approved it earlier this week. This is final push in a decades-long struggle that began after the Confederate flag was placed on South Carolina’s Capitol dome in 1962 and was later relocated to a 30-foot flagpole at the Civil War monument after a compromise that required a two-thirds vote in both the House and Senate to take it down. Strom Thurmond on liberals
1978 Interview
"I think so far as liberalism goes, it depends. I mean, it's hard to find. A true liberal is to be admired. But the word "liberal" today, is one that believes in big government, the one that doesn't trust the people, you've got to have an almighty government here to protect him from the time he's born until he goes to his grave. Now I abhor that type of government. I believe in incentive, only putting restrictions 'round that you have to have, turn 'em loose and let 'em work hard, save, have something, have incentive to do things. And with all the laws we've got today restricting business, I don't see hardly how a business can operate, to tell you the truth. And I'm not for big business—the very reason I say that is because I'm for the working people and I think it's best f...

(25 May 1997) English/Nat
The oldest member of the U-S Senate reached yet another milestone on Sunday when he became the United States' longest serving senator.
But, despite the fact that South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond has spent nearly 42 years in Congress, he has no intention of retiring any time soon.
Ninety-four-year-old South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond already holds the record as the oldest member to ever serve in Congress.
On Sunday, he broke another record - that of Senate's longest serving member.
Bantering with reporters at a celebratory press conference last week, Thurmond said time had moved too quickly.
But, he added, he still felt like a million bucks.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"It's passed too fast for me. 94 years old...I don't look 94 years old!"
SUPER CAPTION: Senator Strom Thurmond - Republican, South Carolina
Thurmond was sworn into the Senate on 5 January 1955.
On Sunday, he will have spent 41 years, nine months and 31 days there - longer than any other member has ever served.
Born in 1902 - when Theodore Roosevelt was president - Thurmond's political odyssey has been remarkable, to say the least.
He's been a Democrat, a Dixiecrat, a governor and a presidential candidate.
He ran for President against Truman in 1948.
He was once a well-known segregationist - and then became the first Southern senator to ever hire black staffers.
Thurmond told reporters the best part about being a Senator was never knowing what each new day would bring him.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"The challenges are unending. I've been here for about 42 years, and every day, there are new challenges. I like challenges."
SUPER CAPTION: Senator Strom Thurmond - Republican, South Carolina
The South Carolina senator walks stiffly these days, he can't always hear very well and staffers have to guide him through committee sessions.
But even though many Republicans say privately that Thurmond is too old for his job, no one expects him to step down.
What's the secret to Thurmond's longevity?
He says genes count for a lot but attributes his winning health to a good diet, daily exercise and an optimistic attitude.
And when asked how he would like to be remembered, he had this to say:
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"As one who cares. One who cares about his family. One who cares about his friends. One who cares about his state and nation."
SUPER CAPTION: Senator Strom Thurmond - Republican, South Carolina
Thurmond will be 100 years old when his term finishes in 2002.
He says he won't run for office again.

http://democracynow.org - The Confederate battle flag that has flown on the South Carolina state House grounds for more than 50 years comes down today. As Gov. Haley signed the bill in the state House rotunda Thursday, she was joined by relatives of the nine people gunned down June 17 at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston as they attended Bible study, along with three former South Carolina governors and the Rev. Jesse Jackson. The flag is set to be taken down at 10 a.m. this morning and will be moved to the state’s Military Museum in Columbia, where it will be on display in the Confederate Relic Room. For more, we speak to Wanda Williams-Bailey, the interracial granddaughter of the late South Carolina senator, former governor and longtime segregationist, Strom Thurmond, who died at the age of 100 in 2003. Months later, a woman named Essie Mae Washington-Williams came public to reveal she was the daughter of Thurmond and Carrie Butler, who was a 16-year-old African-American housekeeper in Thurmond’s home. Thurmond never publicly acknowledged Washington-Williams as his daughter or Wanda as his granddaughter.

The longest serving U.S. Senator turned 100 on Thursday.
Strom Thurmond spent his birthday on Capitol Hill, where for 48 years, longer than any Senator in history, he has been an integral part of the changing political and racial mores of the South.
Several hundred people - friends, family and Washington's elite - honoured Thurmond at a ceremony in a Senate office building.
"I am pleased to be celebrating my 100th birthday today," he said in a statement sent out by his office. "South Carolina is the finest state in our great nation and I am grateful to the people of South Carolina for allowing me this long and full career in public service. God bless the United States of America."
President Bush, in a birthday message, noted that Thurmond, while serving as a circuit court judge, volunteered for combat duty during World War II and landed a glider at Normandy on D-Day at the age of 41.
Bush said "His patriotism, courage and lifetime dedication to South Carolina and his nation will always be remembered."
Thurmond won his first election to a local office in 1928, and, after serving in World War II, was elected governor in 1947.
He is ending his eighth and final term a physically frail but still visible presence in the Senate.
Generally confined to a wheelchair and always accompanied by aides during the last few years, he still rarely missed a Senate vote.
The man who entered the Senate abetting the body's deep racial division leaves it as a much-loved legend.
He is being succeeded by fellow Republican Rep. Lindsey Graham, who was born a year after Thurmond entered the Senate.
Thurmond is to be feted at the White House on Friday, and on December 12 he is to attend ceremonies at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington when the Air Force is to name its 100th C-17 cargo plane the "Spirit of Strom Thurmond."

And I'm not for big business—the very reason I say that is because I'm for the working people and I think it's best for the working people to have these opportunities rather than putting restrictions around it that the federal government is doing. I think they've gone too far in that respect."
