Why Some Black Women Are Turning to Witchcraft
Once a haven for the entire community, the Black church is losing some of its younger members to witchcraft.
Over the last 5-10 years, more Black millennials and Gen Zโers are breaking away from Christianity as a religion and seeking Black ancestral spiritual practices. While the practice of magic and the term โwitchโ is often associated with whiteness, Black women have been reclaiming the space and traditions that originated in West Africa, Cuba, and Jamaica and migrated through the transatlantic slave trade. A 2021 Pew Study found that while most Black people still identify as Christian or Protestant, 15% of Black Americans surveyed say they pray at a home altar or shrine more than once a week, while 8% burn candles, incense or sage for spiritual or religious reasons as often, and 8% a...

In Romania, the homeland of Dracula and superstition, witches were pretty much spared from the medieval witch-hunts that plagued most of Europe and killed 100,000 women. In fact, witchcraft here is not only alive; itโs thriving, and itโs even feared by politicians. There are hundreds of witches in the country, and they make and break marriages, cure diseases, cast or release people from good and evil spells, and predict the future. Supposedly, one in ten Romanians visits a witch.
To find out how this influences modern Romanian society, Broadly correspondent Milรจne Larsson spends a week with Mihaela Mincaโs witch clan and learns how to brew a love potion, cook up a curse, and even witnesses the exorcism of a woman supposedly possessed by the devil. We also meet Mincaโs mother-in-law, Bratara Buzea, reputedly one of the worldโs most powerful witches, who was jailed under communism when dictator Ceausescu banned witchcraft. Finally, we celebrate Summer Solstice, the yearโs most important celebration, when the witches use their magical power to predict the future of mankind in the stars.

During our last several episodes, Europe and the European-controlled world have been in crisis. Wars, disease, climate changes, and shifts in religious and political power threw the European world into turmoil. People were looking for a scapegoat, and for many it was a time of magical thinking. So, maybe witches were responsible for all the problems? It was a popular idea, but, alas, the witches weren't responsible.

A 2021 Pew Study found that while most Black people still identify as Christian or Protestant, 15% of Black Americans surveyed say they pray at a home altar or shrine more than once a week, while 8% burn candles, incense or sage for spiritual or religious reasons as often, and 8% also say they consult a diviner or reader several times a week.
This new โtrendโ has been catapulted by social media where Black women are creating safe spaces to practice divination through astrology, tarot card readings, creating altars, and other rituals without fear of isolation or persecution.
