John Cranko School
Advocating that all the world’s best ballet companies had schools attached, John Cranko founded his school in 1971 to train young dancers for the Stuttgart Ballet, which he had directed since 1961. The theory was sound and, according to the School’s current director, Tadeusz Matacz, up to 70 per cent of the company’s dancers have come through the John Cranko School. The School has just celebrated its 50th anniversary and Matacz gives an in-depth interview in this film.

John Cranko’s Onegin
With his full-length ballet Onegin, John Cranko secured his place in the pantheon of great 20th century choreographers. Based on Alexander Pushkin’s dramatic verse novel „Eugen Onegin“, he tells the story of the arrogant and world weary aristocrat Onegin who rejects the love of the naïve country girl Tatiana only to realize – upon meeting her again years later – that in her he threw away the only woman who ever truly loved him. On the occasion of its 50th anniversary the Stuttgarter Ballett has come up with a special cast featuring Alicia Amatriain as Tatjana, Friedemann Vogel as Onegin, Elisa Badenes as Olga, David Moore as Lenski, Jason Reilly as Prince Gremin, Melinda Witham as Madame Larina and no other than the wonderful Marcia Haydée as nurse.

Drama um die John Cranko Schule! Was ist passiert?

Romanticism and Saint Petersburg dandyism take pride of place in this great classical ballet. Alexander Pushkin’s verse novel, Eugene Onegin, is a tale of missed opportunities, lost loves and bitter remorse. It is also a ballet by the choreographer John Cranko, the first representative of the Anglo-Saxon tradition to take an interest in these dramatic themes filled with emotional intensity. He was rapidly captivated by the thwarted love and tormented passion that characterise this work of Shakespearean dimensions. Extracts from works by Tchaikovsky support the lyrical flight of the dancers’ movements and the theatricality of the work
