The son of a Swedish immigrant, William Albert Allard studied at the Minneapolis School of Fine Arts and the University of Minnesota with the hope of becoming a writer. Transferring to the University of Minnesota after only a year, he enrolled in the journalism program. He graduated in 1964 with a double major in journalism and photography...
Looking for work in the field of photojournalism, Allard met Robert Gilka, then National Geographic's director of photography, while in Washington, D.C., and was offered an internship.
His most notable work as an intern included his photographs of the Amish for an article entitled "Amish Folk: Plainest of Pennsylvania's Plain People,"(published in August 1965). It is said to be regarded as landmark in the photographic evolution of National Geographic. His work led to a full-time position with the magazine.
In 1967, after just two years, Allard resigned from his position at National Geographic, feeling that he was unable to contribute to the issues of the time, such as the Vietnam War in a way that seemed possible at other magazines such as Life Magazine.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland to a family of German descent, Albert graduated from Mount St. Mary's College in 1833 and married Emily J. Jones in 1838, daughter of Talbot Jones. Albert engaged in the hardware business until 1855, and later in banking. He was a prominent Union leader in Maryland and worked to prevent the secession of the State during the American Civil War. He was also one of the founders and directors of the First National Bank of Maryland, and director of several insurance companies, savings banks, and manufacturing companies.
Albert was an unsuccessful candidate for election in 1866 to the Fortieth Congress and in 1868 to the Forty-first Congress, but was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress, serving from March 4, 1873, to March 3, 1875. He was not a candidate for re-election to the Forty-fourth Congress in 1874, and resumed his former business pursuits. Albert worked to found the ‘Soldiers’ Home’ and an Asylum for orphans and worked to assist African American Freedman during the Reconstruction era, co-founding a school for black teachers in Baltimore. He died in Baltimore, and is interred in Greenmount Cemetery.
The son of Jean-Baptiste Allard, he was educated at the Notre-Dame School of the Brothers of Christian Schools and came to Ottawa in 1872. He first worked as a grocery clerk, later becoming head of a wholesale grocery company. In 1885, he married Matilde Roberge. Allard was elected to the House of Commons in an 1910 by-election held after Wilfrid Laurier resigned his seat.

Street Notes Ep.12 | A Lesson From William Albert Allard
Street photography with the Fujifilm X100V. We bumped into a group of folks dressed in old western attire. We got talking for a bit and we photographed them for a while too. Afterward I realized the situation had played out in a way that reminded me of how William Albert Allard talked about how he would generally approach his subjects. I think it worked out well.
