A jab is a type of punch used in the martial arts. Several variations of the jab exist, but every jab shares these characteristics: while in a fighting stance, the lead fist is thrown straight ahead and the arm is fully extended. It is an overhand punch; at the moment of impact, the pronated fist is generally held in a horizontal orientation with the palm facing the ground.
Etymology
The word jab was first used in 1825, to mean "to thrust with a point." The term is a Scottish variant of the word job, which means "to strike, pierce, thrust."
Uses for the jab
Defense
A jab is an integral part of a fighter's defense. Its speed and power of execution and reach can keep the opponent at a distance, preventing him from charging in. Defensive jabs can be employed while moving backwards.
Speed jab
This jab gives a fighter high mobility and is often used with the intention of scoring points. Fighters use this variation of the jab when they want to preserve the mobility and balance of their stance.
JAB was an Australian punk rock that band formed in Adelaide in 1976. The band's original lineup consisted of Bohdan X (Bodhan Kubiakowski) on guitar and vocals, Ash Wednesday playing bass guitar, synthesizer and tapes, and Johnny Crash (Janis Friedenfelds) on drums and vocals. The band took its name from the first initials of the founding members. In 1977, Bob Stopa was recruited as a second guitarist, and Pierre Voltaire (Peter Sutcliffe) joined on bass, allowing Wednesday to concentrate on keyboards. JAB defied strict categorization and split audiences with their abrasive sound. The catchcry label for JAB among Adelaide's early music press was "synthetic shock rock"; one contemporary critic described them as "experimental, confrontational synthpunk". JAB have since been recognized as perhaps the first Australian band to marry electronica with a punk aesthetic and hard-edged guitar sound.
The band relocated to Melbourne in August 1977, joining the city's burgeoning punk scene and frequently playing live alongside local bands such as The Boys Next Door and X-Ray-Z. Bohdan later recalled, "They were very exciting times, we were changing the face of the music scene and we all knew it. .... All the bands on the scene just kind of found each other. Usually it was through playing together at places like the Tiger Lounge in Richmond, Bombay Rock in Brunswick and of course Bananas down in St Kilda." JAB signed to Suicide Records in January 1978, and two of their songs, "Blonde and Bombed" and "Let's Go", were included on the Lethal Weapons compilation. The band played their final show in August 1978 at the Crystal Ballroom (then known as the Seaview Ballroom), which was also the first gig ever played at the now iconic venue.

The Jab That DESTROYED Mike Tyson - Lennox Lewis Breakdown
Lennox Lewis was the last undisputed heavyweight champion in history, and it’s easy to see why. Lewis soundly defeated the best of his era, garnering an impressive resume to go along with his insane highlight reel. Lewis was a boxer puncher, who fought on the outside until he was ready to take his opponent out. And while Lewis possessed incredible finesse, using his lead hand with the skill of a fencer using his sword, he also always went for the finishing shot.

And Lewis set these shots up with one of the best jabs ever seen in the ring. Lewis's jab was certainly powerful, but it's true power lied in it's insane versatility. Lewis had a jab for every occasion, and as such he was able to exploit the specific weaknesses in any opponent’s chosen system for defense.
Lewis’ rising jab came up from his hip like Ali's. But unlike Alis whipping lead, Lewis’ version jab was stiff. This meant that Lewis could drive his jab through the crack in his opponent’s guard like an uppercut, but obviously with much greater range. As such, this jab was ideal for stopping fighters who liked to move in with low line head moving. They were essentially ducking directly into Lewi’s jab.
But this was just the tip of the iceberg.

The jab is probably the first punch you learn in boxing. While it might seem like something for beginners, it's actually not. Quite the contrary, the jab is universally recognized as the most important punch in boxing.
The reason for this is that the jab helps you set up all your other punches. It enables you to find your range. If you follow my channel you probably already know that the jab and the left hook to the body are my favourite punches in boxing. I can tell just how hard a fight is going to be within the first 40 seconds of a fight simply from my ability to land a jab on my opponent.
I have found that if you can land a jab on your opponent, then you can land any other punch. The jab can not only get you in range but also get you out of danger.
I will be honest with you, perfecting the jab is not an easy task. You will need to put in a lot of effort. Like almost any other skill, improving your jab requires a lot of practice. However, you won't get good practising the wrong technique with your jab. I am going to show you how to practice with the perfect jab.
The first kind of jab I am going to share with you is the speed jab. In this video, you will also learn how to throw a power jab. It is very important that you master both the speed jab and the jab.
How to throw the perfect jab? You need to fully extend your arm so you can set up all your other punches. Not extending your arm means you can't get enough power on the jab. It also means that you are still in range for a deadly counter punch from your opponent. When throwing the power jab, you need to step into it to get the maximum power.
Throwing the speed jab, on the other hand, is mainly to frustrate your opponent. The secret here is to make it really fast. It keeps your opponent thinking and weary of your next punches.
