In 2008 he completed a master's degree in Public Administration in International Development in the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. He returned to work for McKinsey and Company in Dublin before deciding to run for office in 2011.
Donnelly lives in Greystones, County Wicklow with his wife and three sons.
Political career
Donnelly is a member of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform and part of the Irish delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). Since his election he has focused on education and economic issues such as the need to deleverage household debt, public sector and political reform, and Ireland’s Bailout Programme.
Stephen Augustine Donnelly (1835 – 26 November 1910) was an Irish-born Australian politician.
He was born at Cork to Cornelius Donnelly and Mary O'Leary, and grew up in Oxford in England. In 1850 he and his family migrated to Western Australia, following the gold rush to Victoria in 1852. He later mined at Lucknow in New South Wales. In 1864 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for Goldfields West, but he resigned in 1866. On 2 May 1868 he married Catherine Agnes Cummings, with whom he had seven children. He worked for the Public Works Department, eventually becoming roads superintendent at Armidale. He retired in 1896 and around 1898 moved to Waratah, where he died in 1910.

Record Number on Hospital Trolleys: Claire Brock Grills Stephen Donnelly on Hospital Overcrowding
Claire Brock is joined by Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly to react to new figures of hospital overcrowding.
David Cullinane TD, has said that the government’s failure to tackle hospital overcrowding has set a new record this morning with 669 patients on trolleys.
When asked about hospital overcrowding Donnelly tells Claire, "it's not acceptable in a modern country. We are a modern wealthy country and this has to end."
The Minister tells Claire the reason why the figures have risen so high is due to the people still being treated for Covid, "400 to 500 patients every day."
He admits the Health care system does need to "modernise."
Stephen Donnelly states that there is a 'winter plan' whereby he plans to hire 600 more people which is "going fine."

In a tweet over the weekend, Professor Philip Nolan - NPHET's main modeling and forecasting expert - compared them to snake oil.
He said antigen tests will not keep people safe.
NPHET has long had concerns about the effectiveness of antigen testing, which isn't as reliable as PCR tests.
However, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly criticised the remarks from Professor Nolan.
He said: "I don't think it was a helpful comment, if I'm honest.
"I have great respect for Professor Nolan, and I have no doubt that his concern was around people using them in the wrong way."
The Government has been promising wider use of antigen testing for months, somewhat held back by the concerns of NPHET.
However, the tests will be used in Catherine Martin's trials of big sporting events and gigs.
A number of prominent experts have also said the tests have a place in the country's pandemic response.
The rapid tests are also expected to be used to allow for the safe return of students to college campuses in September, including in Maynooth - the institution where Professor Nolan is University President.
