State of health (SOH) is a figure of merit of the condition of a battery (or a cell, or a battery pack), compared to its ideal conditions. The units of SOH are percent points (100% = the battery's conditions match the battery's specifications).
Typically, a battery's SOH will be 100% at the time of manufacture and will decrease over time and use. However, a battery's performance at the time of manufacture may not meet its specifications, in which case its initial SOH will be less than 100%.
SOH evaluation
First, a battery management system evaluates the SOH of the battery under its management and reports it.
Then, the SOH is compared to a threshold (typically done by the application in which the battery is used), to determine the suitability of the battery to a given application.
Knowing the SOH of a given battery and the SOH threshold of a given application:
a determination can be made whether the present battery conditions make it suitable for that application
an estimate can be made of the battery's useful lifetime in that application

Emergency Department Expansion 2019 - Penn State Health
Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is opening the first phase of an expansion to its Emergency Department, a project that began in November 2017.
The first phase of the expansion includes four additional care initiation areas, four exam bays and six treatment rooms, as well as a new main entrance, registration desk and waiting area. It opened to the public at 7 a.m. on Thursday, May 23. In the coming weeks, a new ambulance bay with direct access to trauma bays will be finished.

Expressed in a simple way, it describes the difference between the health of a new #battery and the #health of a used #battery. Typically, this is represented as a percentage of its initial #capacity and #performance.
According to Prof. Howey's expectations, most #EV #batteries are projected to last hundreds of #charging #cycles (most LiBs) without a noticeable loss in SOH. However, EV batteries do #age over time even if the battery isn't used at all.
Apparently, there are always minor losses in battery #capacity: Especially #fast #charging does #harm the #battery in case of a #bad #thermal #battery #management. At higher #temperatures, one of the effects on lithium-ion batteries' is greater #charging #performance & #lower #degradation. That's why many EVs heat their #batteries up before #charging them at #higher #speeds.
