The State Examinations Commission (Irish:Coimisiúin na Scrúduithe Stáit) is the organisation that replaced the Department of Education, Examinations Branchby order of the Minister for Education and Skills in Ireland. The Department of Education and Skills was formerly called the Department of Education until 1997.
History
The State Examinations Commission is a State body established by statutory order on 6th March 2003. The Commission assumed responsibility for the operation of the State Certificate Examinations from the Department of Education and Skills.
The State Examinations Commission has recently launched an online system which allows examination candidates to view their results via the Internet on the official website of the State Examinations Commission.
Organisation
The Commission is staffed by civil servants and there are five Commissioners appointed by the Minister for Education and Skills.
Functions
The commission oversees the state examinations at secondary education level in Ireland. Its offices are located in Athlone, County Westmeath. The two examinations the commission oversees for accreditation and certification are:

After taking degrees in chemistry (1996) and mathematics (1997) at University College Cork, Gerry completed his doctoral thesis in computational quantum chemistry at the University of Cambridge and worked as a post-doctoral researcher in electronic structure theory at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Gerry taught Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Applied Maths in a secondary school in Cork for ten years before joining the State Examinations Commission in 2013, where his roles include Chief Examiner for Science and Chief Examiner for Physics. This work involves the preparation of examination question papers and management of the marking of work presented for examination.

Reasonable Accommodation at State Examinations
Many kids with visual impairment rely on digital material they then cannot use when doing State exams. That is not 'reasonable accommodation', when instead secure digital documents could be in use. I put this to the Minister for Education at a recent meeting of the Disability Matters Committee.

Covid-19: Minister Joe McHugh speaks after announcement on State Exams
This year's Leaving Certificate examinations have been postponed until late July or August.
The State Junior Certificate exams have been cancelled and will be replaced by school based assessments and school exams early in the coming academic year.
The Department of Education says the decisions have been made based on advice from the National Public Health Emergency Team.
Schools are to remain closed until further notice.

Over 67,000 students receive Junior Cycle results
More than 67,000 students have received the long-awaited results of their Junior Cycle exams today, five months after they sat the tests.
These are the first Junior Cycle results to be issued in three years after the State examinations for school students were cancelled during the pandemic.
