A British art expert (Day-Lewis) travels across America in order to purchase a rare Renoir painting in the South but comes across some crazy characters in the process.
In the context of combinatorial mathematics, stars and bars is a graphical aid for deriving certain combinatorial theorems. It was popularized by William Feller in his classic book on probability. It can be used to solve many simple counting problems, such as how many ways there are to put n indistinguishable balls into k distinguishable bins.
Statements of theorems
The stars and bars method is often introduced specifically to prove the following two theorems of elementary combinatorics.
Theorem one
For any pair of positive integersn and k, the number of k-tuples of positive integers whose sum is n is equal to the number of (k − 1)-element subsets of a set with n − 1 elements.
Both of these numbers are given by the binomial coefficient . For example, when n = 3 and k = 2, the tuples counted by the theorem are (2, 1) and (1, 2), and there are of them.
Theorem two
For any pair of positive integers n and k, the number of k-tuples of non-negative integers whose sum is n is equal to the number of multisets of cardinality k − 1 taken from a set of size n + 1.
Here's a clip from what has thus far been Daniel Day-Lewis's only real comedy, the 1988 Pat O'Connor film Stars and Bars. In it Daniel plays Henderson Dores, an uptight English art dealer who's transplanted himself to NYC and is doing his level best to embrace the American way of life. When his boss sends him to the American south to acquire a rare painting from Loomis Gage (Harry Dean Stanton), he must contend not only with the eccentric Gage but his entire wacko family. In this scene, Gage's daughter Cora (Glenne Headly) gives Henderson a piece of her mind - and he learns that looks are deceiving.
Stars and Bars was NOT warmly received upon its release, and it's a shame, since it appears to have scared Daniel off from trying his hand at comedy again. The film is by no means great, but...

This week, a special guest co-host enters the fray and Jason MacLeod stops by to aid in the discussion of a weird 80s comedy starring... Daniel Day-Lewis?! Yep. They discuss the film Stars and Bars, a movie seemingly tailor-made for Hugh Grant years before Hollywood had created Hugh Grant the dopey romantic comedy star. They talk about the lack of jokes (seems to be a theme for these kinds of movies), the harrowing domestic abuse subplot, the hotel canal, the insane dinner table scene and much more.
