Why SHIPS use PORT and STBD instead of LEFT and RIGHT? #Explanation
Ever wondered why the terms “Port” and “Starboard” is used to denote Left and Right side on ships? Well, we wondered and went on to find the answer for you. Read on to know the interesting story behind it:
During earlier days, before ships had rudders on their centerlines, boats were controlled using a steering oar. A steering oar was basically just a modified ore generally attached in a vertical direction to one side of the ship/boat. As it is very common that most of the people are right-handed in the world, most of the sailors were also right-handed, so the steering oar used to control the ship was placed over or through the right side near the stern. Thus most of the sailors used to call the right side the “Steering Side”, which soon became “Starboard”. The word “Starboard” is formed ...

What am I Always Building Stuff Out Of?
Roundabout Watercrafts orders hatches, cut to size for their boats, from 4x8 sheets. What is delivered is mostly usable. But all the scraps leftover from the sheet get sent here as well.
That's where I come in!
I have made a ton of stuff from the leftovers. And along the way, I fell in love with this wonderful material. It's just perfect for the marine environment and kayak tinkerings.
And as chance would have it, someone at King Plastic, the manufacturer of King Starboard, noticed me having fun with their products. They then reached out and invited me to Sarasota for a tour of their place and offered a sheet or two to me for free. I requested a new cutting board and gladly accepted to come pick it up and get a tour of their factory.

The Operations Manager, Charlie who is also the owner's son, was super cool and down to Earth. If you like me, you'd love this guy.
Anyway, this all seemed perfect since I have been using their products for so long now, it's clearly something I was happy to promote. And people had been asking about what it was that I had been using to make DIY transoms for my paddle craft.
So there it is.
King Starboard is it's name.
And a bit of advice I got from Charlie, if you were interested in buying Starboard, is to use their website to find one of their local dealers, since the stuff is expensive to begin with, paying second and third hand distributors would drive the price up for customers.
You can find out 'where to buy' and also just look at some of their project gallery pics for your own inspiration, at their website;

King Starboard, is a great building material for countless applications! We help with tons of starboard projects every year and are often asked “how to glue king starboard?”. In this video, we go over some details about working with starboard, and the pros and cons of using adhesives with it. Revered for its versatility, and durability, King Starboard is the most popular plastic sheet material used in the marine industry. It is composed of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and infused with UV inhibitors, meaning it can never rot, delaminate or fade. All the treatments that give starboard its durable and easy-to-clean characteristics also make it tricky to glue. However, we have worked with thousands of customers that have had mixed results gluing starboard. We try to make it clear that mechanical fasteners are always best when securing king starboard and that glues or adhesives should not be used to create a structural bond. Some adhesives claim to bond starboard, but none that we have found offer completely permanent adhesion. However, we have seen promising results with gluing starboard for certain applications. For example, creating a starboard transducer mounting bracket and gluing it to the transom. Even in applications like this we still advise mechanically fastening it would for a stronger and more permanent bond. In this video, we go over a wide array of applications that would advise or not advise gluing king starboard for. When it comes to choosing the right adhesive we usually recommend elastomeric sealant, from our experience it does a decent job securing starboard or HPDE board in non-structural applications. For more tips and tricks for all your boating and marine projects be sure to check out our learn section, https://www.boatoutfitters.com/learn .
If you have any questions about working with starboard please feel free to contact our knowledgeable and helpful team here, https://www.boatoutfitters.com/contact-us .
