Saint George's Cross (or the Cross of Saint George) is a red cross on a white background.
It was originally the ensign of the Republic of Genoa and was used successively by crusaders and then adopted by England. It became associated with Saint George, the "warrior saint" often depicted as a crusader from the late Middle Ages.
This was an area on the north bank of the River Thames, with a lot of its inhabitants employed as dock workers or in the sugar refining industry. Pelling comments that it had the largest proportion of immigrant Irishmen in the metropolis.
The constituency was marginal between the Conservative and Liberal parties. Pelling suggests the Conservative MP, elected in 1885, owed his victory to generosity "bordering on corruption". Political issues important in the area were protectionism (as sugar refining was damaged by foreign subsidies to rivals) and the immigration of "pauper aliens" (the neighbouring division of Whitechapel had a large population of immigrant Jews).

Nike, which makes the kit for England's national soccer teams, unveiled its new design this week, which it said paid homage to the country's 1966 World Cup-winning men's team. It features the St. George's Cross, red on a white background and England's national flag, in shades of red, blue and purple on the back of the shirt collar.
Nike called the change a "playful update" that was meant to "unite and inspire", adding that the design "disrupts history with a modern take on a classic".

Rishi Sunak has warned against "messing with" national flags after Nike changed the colour of the St George's Cross on England's new football shirt.
Wading into the controversy, the prime minister argued the standards are "a source of pride, identity, who we are and they are perfect as we are".
His comments came as a backlash grew over the modification to the flag by the US sportswear giant, with fans demanding the original flag be reinstated and an online petition collecting thousands of signatures.

The England football shirt has caused quite a stir this week, with fans and critics alike expressing outrage over the wrong cross being displayed on its collar. The design, which deviates from the traditional flag of St. George, has sparked controversy and led to heated debates about national pride and respect for symbols.
Nike, the brand responsible for the design, has defended the decision as a "playful interpretation that represents hope." However, many argue that tampering with a country's flag is unacceptable and disrespectful. The shirt, which comes with a hefty price tag of £125 for adults has also been criticized for its exorbitant cost.
