The St. Louis Southwestern Railway(reporting markSSW), known by its nickname of "The Cotton Belt Route" or simply Cotton Belt, is a former US Class I railroad which operated between St. Louis, Missouri, and various points in the states of Arkansas and Texas from 1891 to 1992.
Corporate history
The Cotton Belt was one of the lines comprising the railroad empire acquired by financier Jay Gould in the last quarter of the 19th century; according to the Handbook of Texas, "By 1890 Gould owned the Missouri Pacific, the Texas and Pacific, the St. Louis Southwestern, and the International-Great Northern, one-half of the mileage in the Southwest."
The railroad was organized on January 15, 1891, although it had its origins in a series of short lines founded in Tyler, Texas, in 1870 that connected northeastern Texas to Arkansas and southeastern Missouri. Construction of the original Tyler Tap Railroad began in the summer of 1875.
On October 18, 1903, the Cotton Belt gained trackage rights via the Thebes Bridge and the Missouri Pacific Railroad along the eastern shore of the Mississippi River to reach East St. Louis, Illinois, and then used Terminal Railroad Association trackage rights into St. Louis. The Cotton Belt also operated a yard and a locomotive servicing facility in East St. Louis, just east of Valley Junction, and south of Alton and Southern Railroad's Gateway Yard, and north of Kansas City Southern's East St. Louis Yard. They also had a freight station in downtown St. Louis. Union Pacific Railroad now operates the yard (still named "Cotton Belt Yard"), but the engine servicing facilities have been demolished.
As of 2008, SWR's rail system included 4,668km (2,901mi) of track, of which 93,3% were electrified. The SWR consists of five sections (directions), the Kyivska, Kozyatynska, Zhmerynska, Korostenska and Konotopska directions. There are 315 railway stations in the SWR system.
History
The first railway to be built in the Ukrainian part of the Russian Empire was a track from Odessa to
Balta. It was 213km (132mi) in length, and was built in 1865. This railroad connected the agricultural regions of the northern part of today's Odessa Oblast with Odessa, a seaport on the Black Sea coast. In 1870 Kiev was linked with this railroad system by a line from Balta to Kiev. In that year Kiev was also connected to the Russian Empire's railroad system by a track from Kiev to Kursk. The history of the SWR began on 7 June 1870, when the construction of these railroads was launched. The Kiev Passenger Railway Station, the main railway station of the SWR and the Ukrzaliznytsia was also built in that year.
The St. Louis Southwestern Railway (Cotton Belt Route) Steam Locomotive #336 is a historic railroad steam locomotive, located at the Arkansas Railroad Museum in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. It is a Class D3 2-6-0 Mogul-style locomotive, built in 1909 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She served on the St. Louis Southwestern Railway (aka the Cotton Belt Route) until 1947, and served industrial customers until 1963. It was placed on display in Lewisville, Arkansas until 1994, when it was donated to the museum. It is the last remaining 330-series locomotive (of ten) used by the Cotton Belt.
St. Louis Southwestern No. 819 is a 4-8-4steam locomotive. It was completed in 1943 and was the last engine built by the St. Louis Southwestern Railway, which was affectionately known as the "Cotton Belt Route". It was also the last locomotive built in Arkansas to date. It is located at the Arkansas Railroad Museum.
History
The Cotton Belt initially purchased ten Northern 4-8-4 engines (#800–809) from Baldwin Locomotive Works located at Eddystone, Pennsylvania in 1930. Seven years later, Cotton Belt built five more Northern engines (#810–814) from their own shops in Pine Bluff, Arkansas in 1937. These Northern locomotives were Class L1 on the Cotton Belt.
In 1942, Cotton Belt officials petitioned the War Production Board for authorization to buy five new EMD FTdiesel locomotives for their growing freight business. Instead, they were granted approval to produce five more 4-8-4 type locomotives (#815–819). Although similar to the previous set of five steam engines, these new locomotives had many modern improvements.

St. Louis (NA), in the standard short-form identification used for American baseball teams generally (which is "Team Name (League)"), would be the standard identification for St. Louis baseball teams in the National Association (NA; full name National Association of Professional Base Ball Players).
There were two such teams, a very short-lived one in 1875 and another which (in the opinion of some sources) was a precursor to the modern St. Louis Cardinals. Because both clubs existed in 1875, and both were members of the National Association, the denotation "St. Louis (NA)" can be ambiguous and is generally avoided, and both contemporary and later records handled this ambiguity in various ways.
One club is now commonly called "Red Stockings" and the other "Brown Stockings" but those names, though used at the time, were not then clearly or definitely established.

The Gateway Multimodal Transportation Center, also known as Gateway Station, is a rail and bus terminal station in downtownSt. Louis, Missouri. Opened in 2008 and operating 24 hours a day, it serves Amtrak trains and Greyhound cross-country buses. Missouri's largest rail transportation station, it is located one block east of St. Louis Union Station.
Gateway Station cost $31.4million to build. and after more than a year of delays, it fully opened November 19, 2008. The station's unique design has won several awards, including 2009 St. Louis Construction News and Real Estate's Regional Excellence Award, 2008 Best New Building by the Riverfront Times, and the 2009 Award of Merit - Illuminating Engineering Society Illumination Awards.
Of the 12 Missouri stations served by Amtrak, St. Louis was the busiest in FY2015, seeing an average of 885 passengers daily. The station is served by Amtrak's Missouri River Runner, Lincoln Service, and the Texas Eagle, with all but Texas Eagle originating and terminating at the station.
