Beloved Lorenzo Ruiz, confronted with death, you proclaimed your readiness to die a thousand times for your Christian faith. Today the whole world admires your courage. We feel particularly proud of you as our brother.
And we pray: You, a family man, protect our families. Keep them united in love. You, who bore your sufferings with patience and resignation, intercede for the sick of mind and body; help them to receive the grace of God’s miraculous healing.

Lorenzo was born in Manila of a Chinese father and a Filipino mother, both Christians. Thus he learned Chinese and Tagalog from them, and Spanish from the Dominicans whom he served as altar boy and sacristan. He became a professional calligrapher, transcribing documents in beautiful penmanship. He was a full member of the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary under Dominican auspices. He married and had two sons and a daughter.
Lorenzo's life took an abrupt turn when he was accused of murder. Nothing further is known except the statement of two Dominicans that “he was sought by the authorities on account of a homicide to which he was present or which was attributed to him.”
At that time, three Dominican prie...

A shock awaited the holy passengers when they arrived in Japan. At the time of their arrival, the rulers of Japan, were persecuting Christians.
Lorenzo was arrested by Japanese officials for the crime of being a Christian and ordered to recant his faith. When he refused, he was imprisoned for two years. Eventually, Lorenzo and his companions were taken to Nagasaki to be tortured and killed if they would not recant their faith.
Lorenzo and his companions were tortured with water forced into their mouths and down their throats and out their noses and ears. Despite the painful torture, the men refused to renounce their faith.
Following this, Lorenzo was hung upside down, with a rope around his ankles.
Lorenzo refused to recant. According to the record of his death, his last words were, "I am a Catholic and wholeheartedly do accept death for God. Had I a thousand lives, all these to Him I shall offer. Do with me as you please."
His traveling companions were all killed, steadfast until the end.
Lorenzo was beatified by Pope John Paul II on February 18, 1981. The beatification ceremony was held in the Philippines making it the first beatification ceremony ever held outside the Vatican.
His canonization took place at the Vatican on October 18, 1987.
Saint Lorenzo Ruiz's feast day is on September 28. He is the patron saint of Filipino youth, the Philippines, people working overseas, and altar servers.

Saint Lorenzo Ruiz was born around the year 1600 in Binondo, Manila in the Philippines. He was the son of a Chinese father and a Filipino mother. Both were Christians and took care to raise Lorenzo as a Catholic. He served happily in his parish church as an altar boy and calligrapher.
As a young man, Lorenzo joined the Dominican Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary.
Later, he married a woman named Rosario. The happy couple had three children, two sons and one daughter. By all accounts, the family was ordinary and happy.
In 1636, Lorenzo was accused of murder. Allegedly he killed a Spaniard. However, to protect his safety at the time, he fled home and found refuge on board a ship with three Dominican priests and a leper. There are no details of this alleged crime other than a journal entry by two Dominican priests, that he joined their group to escape possible arrest. The ship departed the Philippines on June 10, 1636, bound for Okinawa.
A shock awaited the holy passengers when they arrived in Japan. At the time of their arrival, the rulers of Japan, the Tokugawa Shogunate, were persecuting Christians. Prior to this persecution, the Christian population of Japan was thought to number 50,000 souls.
Now Lorenzo was arrested by Japanese officials for the crime of being a Christian and ordered to recant his faith. When he refused he was imprisoned for two years. On September 27, 1637, Lorenzo and his companions were taken to Nagasaki to be tortured and killed if they would not recant their faith.
Lorenzo and his companions were tortured by water, which was forced into their mouths and down their throats and out their noses and ears. Despite the painful torture, the men refused to do so.

Lorenzo married a native Filipino woman named Rosario. The two of them had three children. Their family led a holy, ordinary life.
In 1636, Lorenzo was falsely accused of killing a Spaniard. To escape arrest, he fled to a ship that was about to sail for Japan. On board were three Dominican priests and a layman who had leprosy.
At the time when the ship arrived in Okinawa, the Japanese government was persecuting Christians. So Lorenzo was arrested for being a Christian. His captors ordered him to renounce his Faith, but he refused. He was imprisoned for two years.
Then, in 1637, Lorenzo’s captors took him and his companions to Nagasaki. They gave Lorenzo and his companions the choice to renounce the Christian Faith or be tortured and killed.
First, Lorenzo and his companions were tortured by water. Their captors poured water into their mouths so forcefully that it came out their noses and ears. Lorenzo and his companions refused to renounce their Faith, despite this torture.
Lorenzo and his companions were then tortured through tsurushi or “gallows and pit,” in which victims are hung upside down with a rope around their ankles and a gash cut in their head to prevent very much blood from gathering in their heads.
The torturers left one hand untied so that the victims could use the hand to show they were willing to renounce their Faith. But Lorenzo refused to renounce his Faith. He died from blood loss and suffocation, after two days of torture. His companions also held steadfast to the point of death.
As Lorenzo prepared to die, he said, “I am a Catholic and wholeheartedly do accept death for God. Had I a thousand lives, all these to Him I shall offer. Do with me as you please.”
St Lorenzo Ruiz was beatified in 1981 by Pope St John Paul II at a ceremony in the Philippines, the first beatification ceremony to be held outside the Vatican.
St Lorenzo’s Feast Day is on September 28th.
St Lorenzo Ruiz is the patron saint of the Philippines and of Filipino people. You can ask him to pray for you if you live in the Philippines or if you are of Filipino descent. You can also ask him to pray for someone you know who lives in the Philippines or is of Filipino descent.
St Lorenzo Ruiz is also the patron saint of separated families. You can seek his intercession if part of your family is separated. Or you can ask him to pray for a separated family you know.

At that time, three Dominican priests, Antonio Gonzalez, Guillermo Courtet, and Miguel de Aozaraza, were about to sail to Japan in spite of a violent persecution there. With them was a Japanese priest, Vicente Shiwozuka de la Cruz, and a layman named Lazaro, a leper. Lorenzo, having taken asylum with them, was allowed to accompany them. But only when they were at sea did he learn that they were going to Japan.
They landed at Okinawa. Lorenzo could have gone on to Formosa, but, he reported, “I decided to stay with the Fathers, because the Spaniards would hang me there.” In Japan they were soon found out, arrested, and taken to Nagasaki. The site of wholesale bloodshed when the atomic bomb was dropped had known tragedy before. The 50,000 Catholics who once lived there were dispersed or killed by persecution.
They were subjected to an unspeakable kind of torture: After huge quantities of water were forced down their throats, they were made to lie down. Long boards were placed on their stomachs and guards then stepped on the ends of the boards, forcing the water to spurt violently from mouth, nose and ears.
The superior, Fr. Gonzalez, died after some days. Both Fr. Shiwozuka and Lazaro broke under torture, which included the insertion of bamboo needles under their fingernails. But both were brought back to courage by their companions.
In Lorenzo’s moment of crisis, he asked the interpreter, “I would like to know if, by apostatizing, they will spare my life.” The interpreter was noncommittal, but in the ensuing hours Lorenzo felt his faith grow strong. He became bold, even audacious, with his interrogators.
The five were put to death by being hanged upside down in pits. Boards fitted with semi-circular holes were fitted around their waists and stones put on top to increase the pressure. They were tightly bound, to slow circulation and prevent a speedy death. They were allowed to hang for three days. By that time Lorenzo and Lazaro were dead. Still alive, the three priests were then beheaded.
In 1987, Pope John Paul II canonized these six and 10 others: Asians and Europeans, men and women, who spread the faith in the Philippines, Formosa, and Japan. Lorenzo Ruiz is the first canonized Filipino martyr. The liturgical feast of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz and Companions is celebrated on September 28.
