Pope Sixtus II (died 6 August 258) was the Pope or Bishop of Rome from 31 August 257 to his death in 258. He was martyred during the persecution by Emperor Valerian.
Biography
According to the Liber Pontificalis, he was born in Greece and a philosopher; however, this is uncertain, and is disputed by modern western historians arguing that the authors of Liber Pontificalis confused him with that of the contemporary author Xystus, who was a Greek student of Pythagoreanism. He restored the relations with the African and Eastern churches which had been broken off by his predecessor on the question of hereticalbaptism raised by the heresy Novatianism.
In the persecutions under Valerian in 258, numerous bishops, priests, and deacons were put to death. Pope Sixtus II was one of the first victims of this persecution, being beheaded on 6 August. He was martyred along with six deacons— Januarius, Vincentius, Magnus, Stephanus, Felicissimus and Agapitus.Lawrence of Rome, his best-known deacon, suffered martyrdom on 10 August, 3 days after his bishop, as Sixtus had prophesied.

The Churchs most spectacular papal tomb restored
In the history of the papacy, this bronze tomb is one of a kind, it was made in 1484 for Pope Sixtus IV. The most important Italian sculptors of the time, Antonio del Pollaiolo, took nine years to finish it. Yet it was never used for as a tomb.

"The artist sculpted all the elements that humanists had placed at the centre of culture during those times, cause the Pope was very cultured and sensitive."
Next to the sculptures, the artist added two panels. The one that sits at the popes feet tells the life of the pontiff. The other, under the head of Sixtus IV, has his signature. In addition, the sculptor also carved oak branches, which identified the family of the Pope.
The monument, which is also known as the bronze Sistine Chapel can be seen at St. Peters Basilicas Museum.

Then in 258 AD, worried it would be looted by the Romans in their persecution of Christians, PopeSixtus II entrusted it to his deacon Lorenzo, who shipped it off to be hidden in his parents’ home in Spain.
