RAMSGATE
Ramsgate is a seaside town with a fantastic Marina and beach so we take a walk along the seafront to see what's there! We've been asked so many times to film Ramsgate and we're delighted to do this one as we agree its' one of the grandest seaside towns in England!
Ramsgate has historic architecture, pretty streets, a sandy beach, and—thanks to George IV—the only royal harbor in the United Kingdom. It's easy to get here by car or train from the capital, and makes a great day trip to the seaside near London.

Ramsgate Walk: Town Centre & Harbour【4K】
Located in the county of Kent, and around 60 miles east of Greater London, is the town of Ramsgate.
The name 'Ramsgate' is derived from Old English for 'raven's cliff gap'. Its known history dates back to circa 597 AD when the prior of a Roman monastery, known as Augustine, landed here. He was sent by Pope Gregory the Great with the aim of Christianising King Æthelberht of Kent, in what became known as the Gregorian Mission. After converting the king and many of his subjects, Augustine became the first Archbishop of Canterbury in circa 603 AD.
Until around the 17th century, Ramsgate was part of an island that was separated from the British mainland by the Wantsum Channel, known as the Isle of Thanet. Eventually the channel silted up, and the last known instance of a ship traversing it wa...

Our visit to Ramsgate, Kent
A day at another of Kent's charming seaside towns. This time it's Ramsgate, on Kent's east coast.
We start with the marina, before moving on to its harbour - Ramsgate's history, as a limb in the Cinque ports, dates back to 12th century. We then pop into the Sailors' Church before climbing Jacob's ladder to the West Cliff to promenade and admire the Georgian, Regency & Victorian architecture that makes Ramsgate so appealing. From here we discover some of the best of the old town, including famous names like Charles Darwin & Vincent Van Gough associated with the town.
We then head across to the East Cliff for a further promenade before heading down to the golden sands of Ramsgate's beach. Strolling past the historic Ramsgate Tunnels, and back towards the Ramsgate Maritime Museum.

Ramsgate
Here at the very edge of the Garden of England, three Georgian and Victorian resorts, each with its own distinctive character – Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate – cluster around the bays at the far end of the peninsula. There’s a retro feel to these harbour towns, miles of low chalk cliffs edge the peninsula, sheltering a string of secluded, unspoilt sandy bays. For the ultimate experience, you can cycle or hike on the Viking Coastal Trail, along a stunning shoreline and through tranquil lanes.
Perhaps being so close to Europe helps infuse Ramsgate with a cosmopolitan vibe. A bustling Royal harbour borders a yacht-packed marina, awash with history and overflowing with continental charm, it’s a must-see historic port.
South-facing Ramsgate is proud of its status as England's only Royal Harbour and boasts its own Meridian Line. Five minutes and 41 seconds ahead of GMT, you'll find it in the Maritime Museum, along with artefacts evoking the town's rich heritage of fishing, shipbuilding and shipwrecks. For something a bit different head to The Micro Museum, to find out about the history and ideas that led to the invention of the home computer. Take a tour underground at Ramsgate Tunnels a unique civilian wartime tunnel complex.
Ramsgate's compelling past includes landings by Anglo-Saxons, Romans and Saints - it is also part of the historic Confederation of Cinque Ports. Fine architecture peppers the town - elegant Georgian terraces and impressive Regency villas. Visit The Grange, the first so-called 'modern' house, built by architect Augustus Pugin, who designed the interiors of the House of Parliament. His and his sons' works dot the town - track them down on a self-guided tour.
Don't miss the Pugin and St Augustine Visitor Centre and Shrine, celebrating the first Archbishop of Canterbury - St Augustine who landed at Ebbsfleet in 597AD bringing Christianity back to England.
In Ramsgate, the water is irresistible. Hop on a boat trip to spot seals basking on the Goodwin Sands or discover gorgeous beaches and bays. Bask yourself in the warmth of the exquisitely restored, Georgian Italianate Glasshouse, situated in King George VI Park.
Superb walking trails lead from the bustling port to the exhilarating cliffs; walk the coastal path to Broadstairs, or head south on the epic Saxon Shore Way to bird and wildlife-rich Pegwell Bay Country Park. What better way to discover the town and surrounding area than on an Active Ramsgate, walking route.
Alternatively enjoy sitting at one of the waterfront bars or restaurants is a delight with a cosmopolitan feel.
The events calendar is bursting with annual and new events – Bucket and Spade Run, Battles for Victory, Ramsgate Week, Addington Street Fair, Christmas Illuminations and many more all waiting to entertain you
Ramsgate's main attraction is its coastline, and its main industries are tourism and fishing. The town has one of the largest marinas on the English south coast, and the Port of Ramsgate provided cross-channel ferries for many years.

Ramsgate is a seaside town in the district of Thanet in east Kent, England. It was one of the great English seaside towns of the 19th century.
Ramsgate's main attraction is its coastline, particularly Ramsgate Main Sands the main beach here.
Ramsgate town has a small population of feral rose-ringed parakeets. The story about them appearing in Ramsgate still remains a mystery. According to some sources they may have flown away from the trading ships coming from British India in 1800s!

RAMSGATE | Full seafront tour of RAMSGATE KENT ENGLAND | 4K Walk
A walk from the Yacht Marina to Ramsgate Beach and Royal Victoria Pavilion
Also watch full tour of Margate 👉 https://youtu.be/wcob8ITiNqI
In this video we take a walk along the seafront starting at prospect terrace above Jacobs Ladder which overlooks the magnificent yachts in Ramsgate Marina.
We then head down to Royal Parade and through the streets of this famous seaside town and along Harbour Parade and down to The Royal Victoria Pavilion on the seafront.
Making our way onto Ramsgate Main Sands (Ramsgate Beach) we head up past all the shops, bars, cafe's and restaurants and up onto Madeira Walk and Wellington Crescent where we can see the East Cliff Lift and look out to sea over the rooftops of Ramsgate England.
The Ramsgate Seafront looks fantastic in the sunshine, with the reflections shimmering on the sea, and the seagulls crying and squawking!

Eventually the channel silted up, and the last known instance of a ship traversing it was in 1672. The name 'Thanet' is still used for ceremonial purposes in reference to the geographical area of northeastern Kent in which it lies.
For several centuries, Ramsgate was a tiny fishing and farming hamlet. This began to change from around 1749 with the beginning of the construction of a harbour. This was ordered as the result of a violent storm that had occurred the year before. During the Napoleonic Wars, British troops were quartered here before embarking for the continent.
In 1821 King George IV set off for Hanover via Ramsgate. The story goes that he was so impressed by the hospitality he received that he decreed it a Royal Harbour, making it the only one in mainland Britain with this claim. The following year, an obelisk was placed outside the Clock House (built 1817, now home to Ramsgate Maritime Museum). The obelisk commemorates George IV's royal visit.
In addition to its harbour, Ramsgate grew as a result of the rise in popularity of seaside towns. Many visited for the health benefits of 'taking the waters'. Famous 19th century visitors include Queen Victoria (or Princess Victoria as she was at the time), Jane Austen and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Also, Charles Dickens had a summer residence in the neighbouring town of Broadstairs around two miles away.
In 1876 a young Vincent van Gogh came to Ramsgate as a teacher at a boys' boarding school. He was given accommodation on Spencer Square, and taught across the way at Royal Road, both of which feature in the walk from around the 15-minute mark. Van Gogh's tenure at Ramsgate lasted for two months, after which point he left for Isleworth, along with the proprietor.
Ramsgate's first railway station opened in 1846. This would eventually close in 1926, at which point it was replaced by the current station. Today it is one of the two eastern termini on the Chatham Main Line, with the other being Dover Priory owing to a junction at Faversham. Trains to central London typically take around two hours, although high speed services can reach St Pancras station in around 75 minutes.
In 1901 an electric tram service opened, serving the towns of Ramsgate, Broadstairs and Margate, making it one of the first inter-urban tramways in Britain. Another unique transport service opened in 1969 with a hovercraft to Calais. This ceased operation in 1982. From 1998 until 2013, Ramsgate was a ferry port, courtesy of Transeuropa Ferries which provided a link to Ostend in Belgium, up until the company's demise due to bankruptcy.
Shortly before the start of the Second World War, a network of deep shelter tunnels were built in Ramsgate, with room for over 60,000 people. In 2014 these opened to the public as a volunteer-led heritage attraction. In 1940 Ramsgate played a key role in the Dunkirk Evacuation, a.k.a. Operation Dynamo. On the 24th of May, around 4,200 ships left Ramsgate Harbour to rescue Allied soldiers from the beaches at Dunkirk. Around 82,000 men were brought back here in various small vessels before being transported west via special train services.

We complete the journey by returning to the marina to check out Sundowner, one of the historic 'Little ships' that made up the flotilla so key in the evacuation of Dunkirk as part of Operation Dynamo.
We close with the sun setting over the marina.
Perhaps Ramsgate is another destination to add if you're planning to discover more of Kent's coastline. Does it appeal to you?
