St. John's Jesuit High School & Academy comprises two schools on the same campus: St. John's Jesuit High School (SJJ) and St. John's Jesuit Academy (SJJA). It is located within the Roman Catholic Diocese of Toledo. Both are private, all-male Jesuit schools in Toledo, Ohio.
Background
History
St. John's was founded as St. John's College by the Jesuits in 1898 in downtown Toledo, at 807 Superior St. Built in 1899 and 1909, it was demolished in 1976 and 1978. It was a liberal arts college with a business administration program and a law school that subsequently became a foundation unit of the current University of Toledo College of Law.
Before the shuttering of the college, the Jesuits had purchased property near what is now Gesu church and school, until recently a Jesuit work, for the relocation of its campus. The land was subsequently used as the campus for St. Francis de Sales High School, sponsored by the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales. When the new St. John's opened its doors in 1965 on Airport Highway in Toledo as a college-prephigh school, the school took the Titan as its mascot. The schools now have the most-followed high school rivalry in the greater Toledo area..
St. John's College (SJC) is a Roman Catholichigh school located in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. As with many Catholic schools, school uniforms are mandatory during school hours. Several courses in theology/religious studies are mandatory for students attending SJC.
In June 2014, Holy Trinity Catholic High School's long-time musical art teacher, John Nicholson, was appointed the new vice-principal of St. John's to replace Mr. Cacilhas whom was appointed to Holy Trinity.
History
In 1941, Brantford Catholic High School opened in the basement of St. Ann's Elementary School with just one Grade 9 class. A new class was added each year until 1951 when the school moved to a former residence on Dufferin Ave. From 1951 to 1978, the priests of the Congregation of the Resurrection acted as the principals. In 1959, the schools name changed to St. John's College. In the 1970-71 school year, St. John's College absorbed with Providence College at the present day Paris Road location. In the 1980s, the student population had grown so much that several expansions were added to the building. A new cafeteria, triple gym, teacher lounge, and 13 classrooms were constructed with help from community fundraising. In 1989, more additions were made with the addition of the current main entrance, 9 classrooms, administrative offices, the 'cafetorium', health center and guidance center. In 1991, enrolment exceeded 1700 students. This necessitated the opening of Assumption College in September, 1992, as well as Holy Trinity Catholic High School in Simcoe, Ontario in 2001.
St. Johns is a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was created by redistribution in 1957, and has formally existed since 1958. It is located in the north-end of Winnipeg. The constituency is bordered by Kildonan to the north and west, Burrows to the west, Elmwood to the east, and Point Douglas to the south.
The riding's population in 1996 was 20,023. The average family income in 1999 was $40,443, with an unemployment rate of 10.90%. Over 35% of the riding's residents are categorized as low-income.
St. Johns has a diverse population. Ten per cent of the riding's residents listed Ukrainian as their ethnic origin in 1999, with a further 6% Polish and 5% Jewish. Twelve per cent of the riding's residents are aboriginal. Manufacturing jobs accounted for 18% of the riding's industry, with a further 15% in services.
The station began life in 1873 as the penultimate stop on the Peel Line, the island's first passenger railway line; it consisted of a simple wooden waiting shelter with accommodation for the station master, and a passing loop. This layout remained until the arrival of the new line from the north in 1879 when a second station was established, later merging with the existing one.
Significance
The station was the hub of the island's railway network, where the lines to Douglas, Peel, Ramsey and Foxdale met. There have been three stations within the area (see below) but only the original 1873 station serving the Peel Line remained in use until the closure of this part of the network, with the Foxdale line station remaining in a derelict condition until the closure of the network. The station gained the name The Manx Crewe owing to the amount of traffic, being said to equal the hub of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway.
It was created by the British North America Act of 1867. It consisted of the Parishes of Saint Luc, Blairfindie, Saint Jean, Saint Valentin and Lacolle, and the islands in the River Richelieu lying near those parishes.
